Repaired 3cm. tear in upper margin Notes Saul Steinberg born Saul Jacobson in June in Romania was a cartoonist and illustrator best known for his line drawings that suggest elaborate eclectic doodlings. Steinberg studied sociology and psychology at the University of Bucharest and architecture in Milan. From 1936 to 1939 he published his cartoons in Italian magazines. Settling in New York City in 1942 Steinberg worked as a freelance artist cartoonist and illustrator mainly for The New Yorker magazine and exhibited his drawings in Paris New York City and other cities. Steinberg's subject matter ranges from the whimsical e.g. a wicker chair overtaken by its curlicues to the satirical sinister overgrown gadgets to the philosophical a tiny figure perched on a giant question mark balanced at the edge of an abyss. He was miffed at the credit Lesseps received and had this portrait removed from those 200 copies. The album is a collection of watercolors from life following and commemorating the inauguration of the Suez Canal from the ceremonies of 16th November 1869 up to the crossing between the 17th - 20th November. . . . Ferdinand Marie Vicomte de Lesseps GCSI 1805 - 1894 was a French diplomat and later developer of the Suez Canal which in 1869 joined the Mediterranean and Red Seas substantially reducing sailing distances and times between Europe and East Asia. �douard Riou 1833 - 1900 was a French illustrator who illustrated six novels by Jules Verne as well as several other well-known works. June Wayne a painter and printmaker who helped revive the fortunes of fine-art lithography in the United States when she founded the Tamarind Lithography Workshop in 1960 in Los Angeles died in 2011 at her home there. She was 93. Ms. Wayne a self-taught painter became interested in lithography in the late 1940s and after collaborating with the printer Marcel Durassier in Paris in the 1950s adopted it as her primary means of expression. LAMA BLOG Emerson Woelffer Postwar Renaissance Man April 26 2016 A self-described "abstract surrealist" the painter collagist and teacher Emerson Woelffer 1914-2003 was in many ways the very ideal of a postwar American artist. His distinctive style of Abstract Expressionism was inflected by his many and varied interests and experiences. He was a student at the Art Institute of Chicago before becoming employed in the WPA artist's program and then as a teacher at L�szl� Moholy-Nagy's Institute of Design in Chicago. Woelffer also lived and worked for a period in Mexico and in Italy; played jazz drums; and collected ethnographic art as well as cars. A close friend of Robert Motherwell and Buckminster Fuller he was invited to teach at the storied Black Mountain College in North Carolina in 1949. Woelffer came to Los Angeles a decade later and upon taking a position as an instructor at the Chouinard Art Institute became mentor to an impressive roster of devoted students that included Larry Bell Ed Ruscha Joe Goode and Charles Arnoldi. Signed presentation copy to Vesta Kirby a San Francisco artist and collaborator of Gordon Onslow-Ford. Loosely inserted are 2 printed poems by Peggy Bowman. Richard Bowman printmaker painter and teacher was born in Rockford Illinois on March 15 1918. He received a scholarship to the Art Institute of Chicago School where he earned his B.F.A. in 1942. He continued his studies at the State University of Iowa and earned his M.F.A. in 1949. As recipient of the Edward L. Reyerson Traveling Fellowship in 1942 he traveled to Mexico where he made the acquaintance of Gordon Onslow-Ford. Bowman taught at Stanford University in 1949 and in the following year he joined the faculty of the University of Manitoba where he taught for four years. In 1954 he returned to California settling in San Mateo County and taught sporadically at Stanford over the next nine years. He renewed his friendship with Onslow-Ford and in 1959 an exhibition of their work was held at the San Francisco Museum of Art. Bowman received numerous awards. Richard Bowman died in Redwood City California on December 10 2001. ________________________________ Peggy Gladys Bowman died on 01/01/12 at age 87. Born in Chicago IL. A resident of Emerald Hills CA for 52 years. Peggy studied at the Texas College of Arts and Industry from 1943 to 1946. In 1947 she married artist Richard Dick Bowman. She received her Bachelor's of Arts degree from the University of Iowa '49 where she studied at the Iowa Writers' Workshop. Peggy remained a poet throughout her life. After receiving her degree Peggy and Dick moved to Winnipeg Canada where Dick helped open the University of Manitoba's art department. In 1954 they moved to the Bay Area. Peggy and Dick were a key part of the artistic circle in northern California where they shared an intense love of art jazz and poetry. Peggy was predeceased by her beloved husband Dick. Collectors Press no. 106 1918-1996 Professor Emeritus Sidney Gordin one of the most beloved professors in the art department at UC Berkeley died in his sleep at the age of 77 on January 28 1996 at his home in Berkeley. He is survived by his sister and brother-in-law Doris and Harold Nemzer of Los Angeles three nephews and a niece. Gordin was born on October 24 1918 in Chelzabinsk Russia and came to the United States in 1922 settling with his family in Brooklyn New York. He graduated from Cooper Union School of Art New York in 1941. Gordin's first solo show was presented at Bennington College Vermont in 1951 and he participated in his first group exhibition American Sculpture 1951 that same year at the Metropolitan Museum of Art New York. He went on to establish an important reputation as an artist in New York with solo shows at Peter Cooper Gallery Grace Borgenicht and The New School. His innovative abstract metal and wire constructions were included in From Sketch to Sculpture 1953 and Recent Sculpture USA 1960 both at the Museum of Modern Art New York. Other prestigious exhibitions included the 1959 Annual Exhibition Precisionist View in American Art 1961 Sculpture and Drawing Annual 1962 and Geometric Abstraction in America 1962 all at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York. His work of this period has been described as wonderfully airy elegant and dynamic constructions of thin wire. A crucial element was Gordin's desire for precision. He explained: "Why did I restrict myself that way I think I wanted to get to the essence of quality. I wanted everything to be perfectly proportioned perfectly put together. Restricting yourself gives you an intensity of working." Gordin who was originally born in Russia first focused on drawing and later switched his artistic talents to sculpting. He taught at UC Berkeley and at Sarah Lawrence College in New York. Gordin's works are innovative and tended to require or revolve around a specific creative process. He was influenced by Cubism and Futurism for his earlier geometric sculptures but his art evolved into biomorphic figures and dramatic brushwork after he discovered the Post-War Bay Area art scene. John Leslie Jackie Coogan October 26 1914 - March 1 1984 was an American actor who began his movie career as a child actor in silent film. Hollywood As a child star Coogan earned as much as $4 million but the money was taken by his mother Lilian and step-father Arthur Bernstein for cocaine and heroin. He sued them in 1935 but only received $126000. The legal battle did however bring attention to child actors and resulted in the state of California enacting the California Child Actor's Bill sometimes known as the Coogan Bill or the Coogan Act. This is inscribed to David Bacon the nephew of Max Bacon. Before becoming a character actor Max Bacon was one of the most significant drummers in Britain during the 1920s and 30s. He wrote Max on "Swing" 1934. David was the proprietor of the Heywood Hill Bookstore in Mayfair London which still exists. London: circa 1949-1950 unknown

Carl Barriteau clarinet and saxophone player and bandleader: born Trinidad 7 February 1914; died Sydney Australia 24 August 1998 Carl Alrich Stanley Barriteau was a jazz clarinetist. Born in Trinidad Barriteau was raised in Maracaibo Venezuela. He played tenor horn in Trinidad from 1926 to 1932 then played clarinet in a local police band from 1933 to 1936. In 1937 Barriteau moved to Britain and joined the West Indian Swing Band band led by Ken "Snake Hips" Johnson a jazz trumpeter with whom he toured variety halls and played night club bookings. They made several recordings including a successful version of "Tuxedo Junction" 1940. Late 1939 the band began a residency at the Cafe de Paris in London. The band was playing there when the building was bombed during an air raid in March 1941. Johnson was killed and Barriteau was badly injured. He made a good recovery and went on to work as a featured soloist with a series of wartime bands including those led by Lew Stone Ambrose Chappie D'Amato Eric Winstone and Joe Loss. From 1942 he played regularly at the weekly Sunday jam sessions held in London at the Feldman Club at 100 Oxford Street. Barriteau formed his own West Indian Dance Orchestra which worked and broadcast from London. He made a double-sided recording of Artie Shaw's Concerto for Clarinet that displayed his great agility on the instrument. His playing here came closer to Shaw's than anyone else's had. Barriteau spent the rest of the war years touring with the band and recording for the Decca label. As the war ended took the band on a tour to play for British forces in Europe. He took the band into the Embassy Club in London. He was the star of the Melody Maker's 1947 "Jazz Rally" and the 78rpm records of the concerts outsold any other British jazz records of the time. In 1949 he began a two-year residency at the Eldorado Ballroom in Leith Scotland. This may not have been financially rewarding: a visitor to Barriteau's flat in the town remembers that he was loathe to leave it as he benefited from a free gas supply. He had modified the gas meter so that he could put a shilling in the slot and then when it had been credited could persuade the meter to regurgitate the coin. He emigrated to Australia in 1970 became an Australian citizen and settled in Sydney using this as a base for widespread touring throughout Australasia and the Orient. . London: 1943 unknown
