‎Muir John 1838 1914‎

‎THE CRUISE OF THE CORWIN‎

‎Boston and New York: Houghton Mifflin Company 1917. First Edition. Hardcover. Near fine. Large Paper Edition this is number 129 of 550 copies. This copy comes from the library of Lucretia Thatcher Perry Osborn 1858-1930 with her bookplate to the front pastedown and a holographic note in her hand on the front flyleaf "This narrative is one of John Muir's earliest chiefly written from his diary of the North". Lucretia and her husband American paleontologist Henry Fairfield Osborn 1857-1935 were close friends and benefactors of John Muir. Henry accompanied Muir on his fifth trip to Alaska 1896 and later Muir spent time at the couple's summer house in Garrison New York working on the final proofs of The Yosemite 1912. A fantastic association. In addition to its regular arctic duties as a United States Revenue Service Cutter the Corwin steamed out of San Francisco Bay on May 4 1881 with orders to search for the American polar exploration vessel Jeanette which had not been heard from since 1879. Muir shipped onboard as a naturalist and correspondent for the San Francisco Daily Bulletin and this work consists of the 21 letters that he wrote to the Bulletin during the more than five-month voyage supplemented with notes from his daily diary and the two scientific reports on botany and glaciation that he wrote for the government. Muir was a gifted journalist with a reporter's instinct for the dramatic. Filled with colorful details of the arctic natives and their customs the stark landscape and frequently perilous adventures in an inhospitable and hazardous environment his despatches were eagerly read by a large audience. Edited by William Frederic Bade 1871-1936. Hand-colored photogravure frontispiece with 26 plates consisting of one map eleven halftone reliefs from photographs eight halftone reliefs from sketches by Muir and six line blocks from drawings by Muir. Octavo. Original green laid paper covered boards with a green cloth spine and a brown leather spine label stamped in gold. Partially unopened. An especially crisp and bright example. Later bookplate to a prefatory blank leaf. The spine is lightly faded along the spine with a tiny bit of wear to the spine heel and some very mild rubbing to the rear board. Kimes 347. ‎WEYERHAEUSER Frederick 1834 1914‎

‎Partly-Printed Document Signed‎

‎The eighth wealthiest American of all time was a German-born lumber magnate who began his empire in Rock Island Illinois in 1856 starting as a night fireman at a sawmill and working his way up until he owned this sawmill then began adding more until the "Weyerhauser Syndicate" was enormous; he moved to the Pacific Northwest in 1900 where the firm still operates and is the world's largest timber seller. Partly-Printed Document Signed 1p 8 3/4" X 3 3/4" Rock Island IL 1881 November 15. Very good. Ornate check drawn on the Peoples National Bank printed in black on blue stock and featuring decorative border a variety of ornate typefaces and a steel-engraved vignette at left showing a puffing locomotive at a train station. The check has been made out to Weyerhaeuser in the amount of $25000 and is signed by the bank president Bailey Davenport. Davenport 1823-90 was the son of Davenport Iowa's murdered founding father fur trader/Indian agent/frontiersman Colonel George Davenport 1783-1845 and was himself a wealthy banker real estate entrepreneur and mayor of Davenport during the Civil War. On the check's verso Weyerhaeuser signs boldly adding "pat to the Order / of H C Putnam" above. Below this Putnam then signs. Henry Cleveland Putnam 1832-1912 was a Wisconsin lumber baron and philanthropist one of the founders of Eau Claire. Three more unidentified persons also sign below Putnam. Twenty-five thousand dollars was a huge sum of money in 1881. Real estate developer Davenport and Weyerhaeuser who also served on the board of directors of this bank surely had many and complex business dealings -- as Weyerhaeuser likewise also had with fellow lumber baron Putnam. Weyerhaeuser's syndicate was vast and he had arrangements with a large number of other lumber businesses. It's possible the transaction had to do with the purchase of timber lands but this warrants further research. In any case a unique and intriguing document. unknown books‎

VG some modest shelfwear/period poi to half-title page/Abt VG backstrip quite sun-tanned/extremity wear with largish piece lacking from rear panel lower left corner. x 4 456 pp. List of Editions pp. 427 - 432. Index at rear. 8vo. 8-3/4" x 5-7/8"

The Book of the Courtier by Baldassare Castiglione is a lengthy philosophical dialogue on the topic of what constitutes an ideal courtier or in the third chapter court lady worthy to befriend and advise a Prince or political leader. The book quickly became enormously popular and was assimilated by its readers into the genre of prescriptive courtesy books or books of manners dealing with issues of etiquette self-presentation and morals particularly at princely or royal courts books such as Giovanni Della Casa's Galateo 1558 and Stefano Guazzo's The civil conversation 1574. The Book of the Courtier was much more than that however having the character of a drama an open-ended philosophical discussion and an essay. It has also been seen as a veiled political allegory. It offers a poignantly nostalgic evocation of an idealized milieu — that of the small courts of the High Renaissance which were vanishing in the Italian Wars — with a reverent tribute to the friends of Castiglione's youth in particular the chastely married Duchess Elisabetta Gonzaga of Urbino to whom Castiglione had addressed a sequence of Platonic sonnets and who died in 1526. The work was composed over the course of twenty years beginning in 1508 and first published in 1528 by the Aldine Press in Venice just before the author's death." Apollinaire is considered one of the foremost poets of the early 20th century as well as one of the most impassioned defenders of Cubism and a forefather of Surrealism. He is credited with coining the term "Cubism" in 1911 to describe the emerging art movement and the term 'surrealism' in 1917 to describe the works of Erik Satie. The term Orphism 1912 is also his. He wrote poems without punctuation attempting to be resolutely modern in both form and subject. Apollinaire wrote one of the earliest Surrealist literary works the play The Breasts of Tiresias 1917 which became the basis for Francis Poulenc's 1947 opera Les Mamelles de Tirésias. Apollinaire was active as a journalist and art critic for Le Matin L'Intransigeant L'Esprit Nouveau Mercure de France and Paris Journal. Wormser to Mark Altman dated 1942 on Wormser's letterheads the calling cards of Mr. William James Dawson and Mark Altman and a 4-page GPO publication about the establishment of the Library of Congress Trust Fund. Fine. The text of this volume explores the life and accomplishments of Albert Maurice Bender 1866-1941 by a friend of long-standing. While Lewis remarks that "Not one of the facts here assembled is of the slightest importance to anyone" they do reveal a striking word image of Bender the man and reveal a very different time from that of the twenty-first century. The frontispiece is a reproduction of an etching of Bender by Max Pollak 1886-1970 a Czech-born American painter and printmaker one of whose specialties was portraiture; Pollack lived in San Francisco beginning in 1938. Also included is a humorous portrait of "Albert Bender and other benders" signed in the plate by Dan Sweeney 1888-1958 California book and hotel label illustrator that includes African-American train porters and attendants which also conveys an era that no longer exists. This copy in outstanding condition. REFERENCE: Magee and Magee Bibliography of the Grabhorn Press 1940-1956 No. 349. The Grabhorn Press, hardcover books‎

‎FANCHON! The CRICKET. Boston Theatre. May 26 1864.; The PUBLIC DEMAND. This Thursday evening May 26th '64 Miss Maggie Mitchell The Renowned and Fascinating Comedienne will repeat her Unequalled Impersonation of the Merry Little Cricket! In the great original Domestic Drama of Fanchon! The Cricket‎

‎Boston: F. A. Searle Printer 118 Washington Street 1864. Some age toning light crease here & there with the occasional spot or two. Horizontal fold-line. Still a VG example of this fragile item. One broadside sheet printed recto only. 18-1/8" x 6-1/4"

Margaret Julia Mitchell popularly known as Maggie Mitchell was an American actress born in New York. She made her first regular appearance as Julia in The Soldier's Daughter at the Chambers Street Theatre in 1851. The parts in which she was best liked were Jane Eyre Mignon Little Barefoot and Fanchon the Cricket. Wiki In January 1861 At at De Bar’s St. Charles Theatre in New Orleans Mitchell first appeared in Fanchon the Cricket a new secondhand adaptation by August Waldauer from George Sand’s story “La Petite Fadette.” Her characterization of the sprite of a heroine which included a graceful and entrancing shadow dance was an immediate sensation. Her Southern tour was cut short by the Civil War and Mitchell took Fanchon to Boston and New York where it was equally successful. Fanchon remained her mainstay for 30 years. Audiences never tired of it—her admirers included the likes of Abraham Lincoln and Ralph Waldo Emerson—and even in her 50s Mitchell retained the winsome elfin appeal that made her so successful. She also early obtained the rights to Fanchon which enabled her to amass a considerable estate. EB. We find one institutional holding of this playbill at the MHS. A rare survivor of this play's northern run. F. A. Searle, Printer, 118 Washington Street unknown books‎
