br. "'La fonte sacra' è il solo romanzo lungo in cui James si serve di una voce narrante in prima persona [...]. La 'sacra fonte' che dà il titolo al libro è quella da cui ciascuno dei quattro, secondo il narratore, attinge vita, intelligenza e giovinezza, che passa poi all'altro, alternativamente svuotandosi e riempiendosi. Ciò che - attraverso una fitta trama di ipotesi e di smentite, di indizi e di controprove, che fanno assomigliare il romanzo a una detective-story senza delitto - il narratore si studia di comprendere è da quale donna - da quale fonte - Gilbert Long, notoriamente sciocco, ha tratto improvvisamente la sua intelligenza e bevendo a quale sorgente la quarantenne signora Brissenden ha riacquistato la giovinezza che suo marito, anagraficamente più giovane, ha invece perduto [...]. Paul Overt, giovane scrittore con qualche buon romanzo alle spalle, incontra con grande emozione Henry St. George, lo scrittore da lui idolatrato, che lo mette in guardia dalle insidie dell'amore romantico, essendo persuaso che la vita di famiglia, con i suoi gravami, comprometta la creatività e l'integrità artistica. Esaltato e lacerato dalle parole del collega più anziano, Overt partirà per un lungo viaggio all'estero. Ma al ritorno, due anni dopo, di fronte a una sorpresa dal sapore beffardo, si domanderà se il sublime sacrificio che avrebbe voluto imporsi fosse davvero così imperativo: e la lezione che avrà imparato sarà meno eccelsa, e più venefica, di quella impartitagli dal sommo, ineffabile Maestro. Protagonista del romanzo, pubblicato nel 1888, è Hyacinth Robinson, figlio bastardo di un lord inglese e di una prostituta parigina. Entrato a far parte di un'organizzazione anarchico-rivoluzionaria, conosce, non casualmente, Cristina - la principessa Casamassima - con la quale vive un rapporto di reciproche seduzioni. Finirà emarginato da ogni affetto e fede, nell'allucinazione di un misterioso incarico affidatogli dai compagni. Anche in queste pagine, nonostante l'inusuale scelta tematica, resta inalterata la capacità di James di fondere "reale" e "romantico", ponendo "il centro del soggetto nella coscienza del personaggio".
