brossura Il titolo può indurre in errore. Nel romanzo di Tristram Shandy si parla poco. Bisogna arrivare fino alla metà del libro per vederlo nascere e alla fine è ancora solo un bambino. Si parla invece molto del padre Walter, un bizzarro personaggio ossessionato dal tempo e dalle tradizioni, un po' meno della madre, dolce, gentile e un po' ottusa, molto dello zio Toby, ex ufficiale dell'esercito, del valletto Trim, progettista di fortezze ideali, della vedova Waldman, che ama Toby e studia tutti gli stratagemmi per farsi riamare, del parroco Yorick, sincero, nemico della gravità, scherzoso ma inesperto della vita che a causa di ciò si fa molti nemici.

È quanto sembra suggerire Sterne nel "Viaggio sentimentale di Yorick lungo la Francia e l'Italia" (1768), parodistico controcanto all'ossessione per il tema del viaggio che attraversa tutta la letteratura del Settecento. Il reverendo Yorick, già personaggio del "Tristram Shandy", è il maturo protagonista dietro cui l'autore cela la sua identità di anomalo ecclesiastico. Eroe e narratore, tentato ora dalla virtù ora dalla trasgressione, più che descrivere luoghi e monumenti, elargisce impressioni, sottigliezze, umori, ricordi di incontri: il frate e la gentildonna, il locandiere e la sartina, il giovane valletto ed ex tamburino e il vecchio ufficiale. Episodi minuti, quadretti di vita e di costume venati di humour non meno che di malinconia, in cui il sentimento è l'unica regola alla quale il viaggiatore conformi andatura e linguaggio. In un perfetto gioco di specchi, il fittizio Yorick, maschera di Sterne, produce Didimo Chierico, l'immaginario traduttore foscoliano che traghetta da una lingua all'altra questo gioioso elogio delle fughe dell'io nel mondo.

br. Non "Vita e avventure", come per Robinson Crusoe, ma "Vita e opinioni": fin dal titolo il romanzo di Sterne sorprende e si rivela innovativo, tanto da segnare l'avvio della letteratura moderna. Mimetizzato dietro il protagonista e narratore, che racconta una vicenda fitta di personaggi e di situazioni bizzarre, Sterne rivolge la sua penna acuminata contro le convenzioni morali e letterarie dell'epoca, contro l'ipocrisia degli ecclesiastici, la vanità dei potenti e il servilismo dei letterati. Ne risulta un'opera umoristica e malinconica, enigmatica, anarchica e irriverente, originale fin nell'ortografia; un romanzo zigzagante, ricco di divagazioni, di storie parallele, di "opinioni" - appunto -, in cui il protagonista, attraverso l'esercizio del dubbio, giunge alla conoscenza dell'umana finitezza, e ne esce più forte e libero, invitando il lettore a fare con lui lo stesso percorso.
