WOUNDING AND DEATH IN THE ILIAD Homeric Techniques of Description
Faint foxing to top of textblock else book is fine. Very light shelfwear to DJ. Dustjacket is protected in mylar. ; W. H. Friedrich's "Verwundung und Tod in Der Ilias", originally published in 1956, discusses in detail the plausibility (or otherwise) of the wounds received on the Homeric battlefield and is therefore of considerable interest to historians of medicine. It also makes a serious and sustained effort to grapple with the question of style, and thus confronts an issue which oral theory has scarcely touched. Peter Jones adds a preface briefly locating the work within the terms of oral theory. A medical analyses in a full appendix is also added. ; 192 pages

THE MASK OF COMMAND
Faint staining to first couple of pages. Minor shelfwear. Scholar's name to ffep (Robert Brown). ; 0.76 x 7.76 x 5.03 Inches; 400 pages; John Keegan asks us to consider questions that are seldom asked: What makes a great military leader? Why is it that men, indeed sometimes entire nations, follow a single leader, often to victory, but with equal dedication also to defeat? Dozens of names come to mind...Napoleon, Lee, Charlemagne, Hannibal, Castro, Hussein. From a wide array, Keegan chooses four commanders who profoundly influenced the course of history: Alexander the Great, the Duke of Wellington, Ulysses S. Grant and Adolph Hitler. All powerful leaders, each cast in a different mold, each with diverse results.

Sidebottom, Harry
ANCIENT WARFARE A Very Short Introduction
Scholar's name to half-title (Robert Brown). Else fine. ; Greek and Roman warfare was unlike that of any other culture before or since. The key difference is often held to be that the Greeks and Romans practiced a "Western Way of War," in which the aim is an open, decisive battle--won by courage instilled, in part, by discipline. Here, Harry Sidebottom looks at how this Western Way of War was constructed and maintained by the Greeks and Romans and why this concept is so prevalent today. All aspects of ancient warfare are thoroughly examined--from philosophy and strategy to the technical skills needed to fight. Sidebottom examines war in the wider context, showing how wars were able to shape classical society, and how an individual's identity was sometimes constructed by war, as in the case of the Christian soldier fighting in God's name. He also explores the ways in which ancient society thought about conflict: Can a war be just? Why was siege warfare particularly bloody? What role did divine intervention play in the outcome of a battle? Taking fascinating examples from the iliad, Tacitus, and the Persian Wars, Sidebottom uses arresting anecdotes and striking visual images to show that any understanding of ancient war is an ongoing process of interpretation. ; 166 pages

BATTLES OF THE ANCIENT WORLD 1285 BC - AD 451 From Kadesh to Catalaunian Field
Upper corners lightly bumped with tiny tear to cloth at upper edge of rear board. Light rubbing and shelfwear to DJ with 1 small tear. ; Battles of the Ancient World introduces 20 key battles from Europe and the Middle East in a 2000-year period defined by the great empires of the Ancient world: the Egyptians, Assyrians, Persians, Greek city states, Macedonians, Romans, and Carthaginians. Beginning with the battle of Kadesh (1285 BC) , where Egyptian Pharaoh Ramses II outmaneuvered the Hittites' massed chariot formations, and finishing with the battle of Catalaunian Field (AD 451) , where a combined force of Romans and Visigoths defeated Atilla's Hunnic army in a very bloody battle, the book features examples of every type of Ancient warfare. Battles of the Ancient World includes the devastatingly-effective use of the Greek-style phalanx at Marathon (490 BC) , Gaugamela (331 BC) , and Hydaspes (326 BC) ; great cavalry battles, such as Hannibal's destruction of the Romans at Cannae (216 BC) and the Parthian victory at Carrhae (53 BC) ; and the decisive sea battles of Salamis (480 BC) and Actium (31 BC). Lively accounts of other famous battles, such as Alesia (52 BC) , where Julius Caesar destroyed the Gaulish Army and subjugated Gaul, and Teutoberger Wald (AD 9) , where Germanic tribes slaughtered three powerful Roman legions almost to the last man, are described in vivid detail. Each battle includes an introduction to place it in context, a concise account of the action, and an analysis of the aftermath. A specially-commissioned color map illustrating the disposition and movement of forces brings the subject to life and helps the reader to grasp-at a glance-the development of the battle. With more that 200 color and black-and-white maps, artworks, and photographs illustrating the battles, leading figures, and tactics of the period, Battles of the Ancient World provides a useful and accessible introduction to some key battles of the Ancient era. Designed for both the general reader and enthusiast, the book is an essential companion for anyone interested in the history of Ancient warfare. ; 4to 11" - 13" tall; 224 pages; Oversized. THE DEFENSE OF ATTICA The Dema Wall and the Boiotian War of 378-375 B. C.
Very minor shelfwear to DJ else Fine. ; 259 pages; The enigmatic three-mile-long Dema wall in the countryside outside ancient Athens has perplexed archaeologists and historians for decades. When was it built and what role did it play in Greek military history? In a tour de force of archaeological and historical argument, Mark H. Munn establishes the place of the Dema wall in the defense of Athens and offers a completely new perspective on the Boiotian War. Since no ancient reference to the wall survives, scholars have contested the date and purpose of the wall's construction, placing it anywhere between the Geometric Age and Hellenistic eras. While directing the excavation of a watchtower above the wall, Munn's chance discovery of a datable sherd in the wall's remains fixed the date of the wall's construction at 378 B. C. , the onset of the three-year Boiotian War. Munn offers an absorbing narrative account of the war, and his descriptions and effective use of literary extracts render a vivid portrayal of the opposing generals, military tactics, and battle scenes.

LEUCARUM Excavations at the Roman Auxiliary Fort at Loughor, West Glamorgan 1982-84 and 1987-88
Very light edgewear else Fine. Small crease to back upper corner. ; Britannia Monograph Series; 448 pages; The Roman fort at Loughor was founded in c. AD 75 and occupied continuously until the early 120s. The fort was then reduced and was reoccupied from c. 270 until the early fourth century. Excavation was concentrated on the defences and part of the interior. Detailed examination of the defences enabled useful analysis of construction methods. In the interior of the Flavio-Trajanic fort, a sequence of granaries was followed by a series of praetoria. Analysis of these buildings has enabled a reconsideration of the form and function of Commander's houses in auxiliary forts. This volume includes full reports on the finds which included coins, lamps, glass and intaglios.
