‎The 47th (London) Division 1914-1919. By Some who served with it in the Great War. With a Foreword by the Viscount Esher. BRIGHT, CLEAN COPY OF THE ORIGINAL EDITION‎

'Those who served for any length of time in France will recall that the 47th Division always ranked very high among British troops' (Falls). The 47th was the first Territorial division to be engaged as a formation on the Western Front; it served at Festubert, Loos, the Somme, Messines, Cambrai and in the fiercest actions of 1918. Enser, p.61; Falls, p.118.‎

‎CLARK Alan‎

‎The Donkeys. THE ORIGINAL EDITION IN UNCLIPPED DUSTWRAPPER‎

‎8vo., First Edition, with frontispiece, 12 plates and 5 maps in the text; black cloth, backstrip lettered in red and white, red top, a near fine copy in unclipped dustwrapper, the latter lightly chafed at head and tail of backstrip. Classic study of the notorious gulf between High Command and the Front Line on the Western Front in 1915, particularly the disastrous generalship of Second Ypres, Neuve Chapelle and Loos. Compiled with free access to the private files of Liddell Hart, it takes its title from the well-known quotation: Ludendorff: 'The English fight like lions.' Hoffman: 'But don't we know that they are lions led by donkeys'. This work is the inspiration for Joan Littlewood's acclaimed stage musical 'Oh, What a Lovely War!'. VERY SCARCE IN ANYTHING LIKE THIS CONDITION. Enser, p.23.‎

‎Sm. 4to., with coloured formation signs of twenty-six Second Army units on front wrapper; original printed wrappers, wire-stitched as issued, covers very lightly age-soiled, staples very lightly rusting else a remarkably crisp, bright, clean copy. This humble Order of Service is surely the single document which, for every individual soldier in Dempsey's Second Army, symbolised the end of the gruelling twelve months which lasted from from the beaches of Normandy to the heath at Luneberg and brought the end of war in Europe. The front wrapper carries a striking coloured montage of badges of the major formations involved, comprising Second Army, 1 Corps, 8 Corps, 12 Corps, 30 Corps, Airborne Corps, Guards Armoured Division, 7 Armoured Division, 11 Armoured Division, 3 Infantry Division, 5 Infantry Division, 15 (Scottish) Infantry Division, 43 (Wessex) Infantry Division, 49 (West Riding) Infantry Division, 50 (Northumbrian) Infantry Division, 51 (Highland) Infantry Division, 52 (Lowland) Infantry Division, 53 (Welsh) Infantry Division, 59 (Staffordshire) Infantry Division, 6 Guards Tank Brigade, 4 Armoured Brigade, 8 Armoured Brigade, 27 Armoured Brigade, 33 Armoured Brigade, 34 Armoured Brigade, 115 Independent Infantry Brigade. ‎WAVELL Field-Marshal EARL‎

‎T.L.s witten on the stationery of Wavell's residence at 23 Kingston House South, London SW7, and dated 23 December 1949.. T.L.s. FROM FIELD MARSHAL EARL WAVELL‎

‎Single sheet, a near fine copy. Signed simply 'Wavell' in the writer's usual manner, the letter is written to Geoffrey Moore, founder of the Buccaneers Cricket Club, and demonstrates the soldier's keen and continuing interest in the sport. It is noteworthy that Wavell was particularly proud of his membership of the MCC at Lords. The letter declines Moore's invitation to attend the annual dinner, but carries Wavell's best wishes for the Club for the coming year during which he hopes to see tham in action. Field-Marshal Earl Wavell (1883-1950) was one of the twentieth century's most distinguished soldiers. Following considerable success against the Italians in North Africa, his career reached its peak with his appointment as Supreme Allied Commander, South West Pacific, ABDA (American, British, Dutch and Australian) Command in 1942 and subsequently as an outstanding Viceroy and Governor General of India from 1943-1947. He was recognised also as a scholar, compiling the well-known anthology of poetry 'Other Mens's Flowers' (1944). The bulk of Wavell's papers are now housed in the Liddell Hart Centre for Military Archives at King's College, London. Founded in 1930, The Buccaneers is one of the oldest and most famous 'wandering' clubs in English cricket (a 'wandering' club has no fixed home ground but plays consistently as an 'away' team relying on the hospitality of the 'home' clubs against which it competes). The Club's history has been written twice, by Clifford Bax in 1956 and more recently by Howard Spencer. ORIGINAL DOCUMENTS SIGNED BY WAVELL ARE EXTREMELY SCARCE.‎

‎The Second World War, 1939-1945. A Popular Military History by various Authors. Arms and the Men [with] The Campaign in Italy [with] Norway. The Commandos. Dieppe [with] Greece and Crete [with] NW Europe [with] Five Ventures. THE SHORT OFFICIAL HISTORY COMPLETE‎

‎6 vols., 8vo., First Edition, with very numerous plates and maps in the text, three volumes with endpaper maps; red cloth, gilt backs, third volume with laminated covers, a very good, bright, clean set. The set comprises: Ian Hay: Arms and the Men (1950); Eric Linklater: The Campaign in Italy ((1951); Christopher Buckley: Norway. The Commandos. Dieppe. (1951); Christopher Buckley: Greece and Crete 1941 (1952); John North: North-West Europe 1944-45. The Achievement of 21st Army Group (1953); Christopher Buckley: Five Ventures. Iraq. Syria. Persia. Madagascar. Dodecanese (1954). The 'Short Official History' was promulgated by H.M. Government to furnish the general reader with a short military history of the Second World War pending the publication of the numerous Official Histories then commissioning or in progress. The authors were selected by reputation and for their previous association with official sources (most notably in the well-known HMSO wartime pamphlets) and were granted unusual access to official documents and sources of information. As a result, and despite their 'temporary' status, the volumes are not only vividly written but remarkably detailed and well-illustrated. . The series was originally intended to comprise eight volumes but two of those projected, 'The Campaigns in Africa' and 'The Far East 1941-1945' were never published, possibly because by then the first cluster of Official Histories was nearing publication stage. COMPLETE SETS ARE SELDOM OFFERED FOR SALE. Enser pp.202, 228, 298, 191, 76 and 273 respectively.‎

The first edition was approved by both Childers and Hartington and published in 1884; the sixth edition (1914) carried through the Great War. ‎PRINCE OF WALES' OWN (WEST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT).‎

‎1st Battalion The Prince of Wales' Own (West Yorkshire Regiment) illustrated.. With a brief Account of the Services of the Regiment. Mian-Mir and Dalhousie, Punjab, India, 1906. [First and Sole? Edition.] SOME DAMAGE NOTWITHSTANDING, A RARE SURVIVAL‎

‎Oblong roy. 4to., First Edition, with title in red and black, text and captions in red, blue and black, 34 splendid large plates in photo-collotype and full-page musical score in blue; original red cloth, upper board ruled and blocked with regimental badge in gilt, expertly recased, BUT WITH SOME AGE- OR DAMP-DAMAGE TO 22 OF THE LATER PLATES (mercifully restricted mainly to upper blank margins and only materially affecting around ten plates); nevertheless a valuable record and a very scarce work. An unusually lavish production for a single battalion, this work is distinguished by the quality of the plates, which (damage apart) varies from very good to magnificent. The photographs are superbly executed by F. Bremner, photographer, variously of Lahore, Simla & Quetta, and their rendering as collotypes preserves the quite extraordinary detail of faces, uniforms and equipment. The plates include fine portraits of Major-General Frederick Walter Kitchener (Commanding 3rd (Lahore) Division) and Colonel J.C. Yale (commanding 1st Battalion), together with close-ups of the Colours and mess plate. The main body of plates is devoted, of course, to group studies. These include the officers (individually captioned), the battalion on parade, the Colour and colour sergeants (individually captioned), the NCOs (individually captioned), corporals, companies A-H (each company photographed separately), and a fine series of the battalion's various support units, trades and sports teams. An unusual composition is the plate 'Regimental Types' and depicting eight members of the battalion in a variety of uniforms including officer's full dress and OR's marching order. In addition to the plates, there is a detailed account of the battalion's service from Tournay (1794) to its arrival at Lahore Cantonment in 1906, together with pages devoted to regimental marchess. Not the least importance of this work must be as a superbly detailed record of the appearance of a regular battalion of line infantry of the period - crucially, the last phase of Edwardian opulence and before the irreversible changes brought about by the Great War. EXTREMELY SCARCE. IT IS UNCLEAR HOW MANY OF THESE REMARKABLE PORTFOLIOS WERE PRODUCED; CERTAINLY NOT MANY, AND EVEN FEWER CAN HAVE SURVIVED. Sutcliife p.103; not recorded by White (1965).‎

‎The Turn of the Tide [with] Triumph in the West [with] War Diaries 1939-1945. [First two volumes edited by Arthur Bryant. Third volume edited by Alex Danchev and Daniel Todman]. ORIGINAL AND NEW EDITIONS TOGETHER‎

‎3 vols., 8vo., First Edition, with 2 frontispieces, 16 plates on 8, numerous maps in the text and endpaper facsimiles and maps; cloth, gilt backs, all near fine copies in dustwrapper. Comprises: BRYANT (A). The Turn of the Tide 1939-1943. A Study based on the Diaries and Autobiographical Notes of Field Marshal The Viscount Alanbrooke. (1957). BRYANT (A). Edited by Alex Danchev and Daniel Todman. [2001]. By common consent the greatest CIGS in the history of the British Army, Alanbrooke occupied a unique position at the heart of Britain's efforts in WWII. Scarcely a man to pull punches, he provides a blow-by-blow account of how the war was waged and won, sparing no-one from politicians to generals of virtually every Allied nation. For over two generations, historians and scholars have known the Alanbrooke war diaries only through Bryant's classic two-volume edition. Quite apart from the inevitable selectiveness (and much of that rigorously censored), we have several times heard the comment 'too much Bryant and not enough Alanbrooke'. Now, almost sixty years on, we have a complete rendering (from the British perspective) of the most important private military account of the Second World War. Here is the opportunity to compare the old and the new; it is a fascinating task, revealing (first) why so much could not be published at the time and (secondly) the scale of the strains, frustrations and emotions borne by Britain's leading soldier of WWII. Enser, pp.199, 474 (first two volumes respectively).‎
