XLII 370; XX 434; VIII 452 pp. � Rare first edition of this classic in the sociology of law by the founder of Utilitarianism. It is in this work that Bentham coins the word "utilitarian" and it is this work that is chiefly responsible for bringing utilitarian philosophy of law to America apart from spreading the tradition in Europe.<br><br>The work was originally published as it is here in French and it was not published in English translation until 1840 when the first American edition appeared in Boston. The British edition was published in 1864.<br><br>Jeremy Bentham 1748-1832 the hugely influential English jurist and philosopher was the leading theorist in Anglo-American philosophy of law; he was the founder of Utilitarianism and is known as one of the main advocates of animal rights. It is difficult to over-emphasize his influence as a political and economic thinker and his works are of great importance to the development of political philosophy ethics and economics in the 19th century. <br><br>By the end of the 18th century Bentham's "Introduction to the Principles of Morals and Legislation" 1789 had received a significant place in political reform but still his influence was much greater on the Continent than in Britain and America which is reflected in the fact that he was made an honorary citizen of the French Republic in 1792. This also explains why his "Theory of Legislation" as many of his other works was originally published in French his political and philosophical influence being immense on the Continent. Bentham however also came to play a decisive r�le in British and American politics although a bit later and as such this work which proved to be indispensible for the spreading of Utalitarian philosophy of law in America is one of his major achievements. <br><br>"To re-read Bentham now is to realize how much practical good he has done as well as how much he advanced social and political thinking. Typically his range is too great to be easily classified he has left no school or followers but much of what he taught has become part of the common thought not only of his own but of subsequent time: truths which had not found expression before they were pointed out by Bentham are now so universally accepted as to be thought common-place. Take "Utilitarianism" for example; although the concept was not wholly original only Bentham could have summed it up in the succinct aphorism "the greatest happiness of the greatest number" and only he could have coined the word "utilitarianism" to label it. Bentham was a lively neologist: "utilitarian" "international" "codification" all were invented by him; the first he had already used in 1802 in the present work! long before 1823 when J.S. Mill thoght he had coined it."
