Charles Duncombe a prominent American-born physician and politician in Upper Canada was appointed in 1835 to visit and report upon the systems of education pursued in the United States and to offer recommendations for the educational institutions of Upper Canada. His report pp. 68 in which he stresses the need for practical education and adequate financial support for common schools and teacher education is followed by a lengthy appendix of supporting documentation pp. 69-256. Although Duncombe's proposals were not immediately implemented many would be introduced under the administration of Egerton Ryerson and would form the basis of Ontario educational policy until 1871 i.e. local assessment elective school boards female education the creation of normal schools non-sectarian religious instruction &c. 1749. Report From The Committee Appointed To Inquire into the State and Condition of the Countries Adjoining to Hudson's Bay And Of The Trade Carried On There
London: c1780. Later issue of one of the most important reports on the Hudson's Bay Company. The parliamentary investigation into the activities of the Hudson's Bay Company was undertaken as a result of a petition made to the Lords in Council in 1749 aimed at depriving the Company of its charter. The petitioners argued that the charter of 1670 granting sole rights of trade and commerce in the entire area beyond the entrance of the Hudson Straits was either invalid or forfeited and requested an incorporation giving them similar rights over the adjacent region. Arthur Dobbs had provided the initial stimulus and basic grounding for the petition; his was the most sustained and vociferous attack on the meanness rapacity secrecy and jealousy of the Hudson's Bay Company alleging that their policies and attitudes had thrown the fur trade into the hands of the French in Canada and were stifling the exploration of the Canadian North-West. Among the travelers traders and merchants summoned as witnesses to give testimony before the committee were Joseph Robson Matthew Serjeant Arthur Dobbs and William Moore. Appended is the Hudson's Bay Company Charter as well as the valuable narrative of French Canadian fur trader Joseph La France describing the state of the French fortresses in Montreal and Quebec and their lucrative trade with the Indians. The Papers Presented to the Committee contain information regarding voyages undertaken in search of the north-west passage sales made by the Hudson's Bay Company Henry Kelsey's journals of his attempt to open commerce with the Naywatamee Indians in 1691-92 &c. Although the impeachment failed and the monopoly was to continue for another hundred years it did alarm the Company into initiating serious and concerted exploration of the unknown western reaches of the Charter. The effect was to throw doubt on the legitimacy of the marriages of all Jews and Quakers. William Christie 1816-874 the Liberal MP for Weymouth brought in a motion to dispel these concerns which was duly codified into law as 10 & 11 Vic. c.58.<br /> London, George E. At the Parliament begun at Westminster the thirtieth day of December. 1701' acts of Parliament for the last year of the reign of William III and the first year of Anne; unbound; 453-454pp.<br /> An act of Parliament 'To the end that sufficient maintenance be provided and allowed for the children of Jewish parents who shall turn Protestants' p.453. <br /><br />The law arose from the curious case of Mary de Mendez Berta an eighteen-year-old who was disowned and expelled from the family home following her conversion to Protestantism. A petition was brought before Parliament in an attempt to make Mary's father Jacob de Mendez Berta pay for his daughter's upkeep after which it was resolved that a bill be produced to address her case. <br /><br />The resultant act had some effect in the eighteenth century and was considered by the Lord Chancellor Thomas Parker in the 1718 case of Vincent vs. Fernandez. Here it was found that the law could apply equally to the adult child of a Jewish parent in this instance a 44-year-old married woman who had been cut-out of her father's will. An Act to render valid and effectual certain Articles of Agreement between the Mayor and Commonalty and Citizens of the City of London Governors of the Possessions Revenues and Goods of the Hospitals of Edward King of England the Sixth of Christ Bridewell and Saint Thomas the Apostle and of the Hospitals of Henry the Eighth King of England called "The House of the Poor" in West Smithfield near London and of the House and Hospital called Bethlehem and the Presidents Treasurers and Acting Governors of the said several Hospitals.' Bearing a number of underlinings and marginal annotations in a nineteenth-century hand presumably by a member of the solicitors 'Clayton Cookson & Wainewright' whose name is written on the blank last page together with '22 Geo. 3. c. 77'. The involvement of the solicitors may result from 1860s legal action over the moving of St Thomas's Hospital from Southwark to Lambeth. Excessively scarce: no copy on COPAC. An Act published in Public General Acts 1744-1745 enacting an amnesty for those who have engaged in the activity of smuggling and laying out punishments for those who continue to partake in the crime transportation or death. The statutes of 1745 are considered to be the leading statutes for smuggling law in eighteenth-century England as they made the greatest effort to convict offenders and to sentence those convicted to death. These statutes part of the 'Bloody Code' further extended the means by which a person could be convicted for smuggling and put to death without benefit of clergy although other lesser penalties most notably transportation remained the more common outcome. Containing 'An Act for consolidating in one Act certain Provisions usually inserted in Acts of Inclosure; and for Facilitating the Mode of proving the several Facts usually required for the passing of such Acts' and 'An Act to amend the Law respecting the inclosing of Open Fields Pastures Moors Commons and Waste Lands in England' together with two Acts relating to the Inclosure of Salcey Forest and manuscript Commisioner's minutes.

Half brown calf over marbled boards with a red leather title label bearing gilt lettering and ruling to the front board. Rubbing to the spine corners and boards. Some chipping and loss to the leather at the spine with a 2cm split at the front hinge. Some offsetting to the text alongside some spots markings and occasional pencil annotations to the Acts of Parliament. With copies of letters of correspondence relating to the use of land within Hanslope Park in Stony Straford dated to 1865 on embossed Hanslope Park paper loosley enclosed. Contains 4 Acts of Parliament relating to the Inclosure of Salcey Forest forming part of the Inclosure Acts of the 18th and 19th century which put previously common land into private ownership with manuscript Commisioner's minutes providing detail on the procedure land claimants and expenses at the rear. The four Acts include: 'An Act for consolidating in one Act certain Provisions usually inserted in Acts of Inclosure; and for Facilitating the Mode of proving the several Facts usually required for the passing of such Acts' from 1801; 'An Act to amend the Law respecting the inclosing of Open Fields Pastures Moors Commons and Waste Lands in England' from 1821; 'An Act for dividing allotting and inclosing the Forest of Salcey in the Counties of Northhampton and Buckingham; and of certain Lands in the Parish of Hartwell in the said County of Northampton' from 1825; and finally 'An Act for Subdividing alloting and inclosing the Allotment directed to be set out by an Act of the last Session of Parliament for inclosing the Forest of Salcey in the Counties of Northampton and Buckingham to the several Owners and Proprietors of Land claiming Rights of Common in and over the said Forest' from 1826.
