br. Lungo i Pirenei ha abitato per secoli un misterioso gruppo di persone, spesso colpite da terribili persecuzioni. Conosciute come Cagots, la loro origine resta tuttora ignota. Le fonti medievali ne parlano come di «costruttori», carpentieri, tagliatori di pietre e fabbri. È certo che si tendeva a isolarle e a trattarle come degli «intoccabili», rendendole oggetto di disprezzo e intolleranza. Ma costituirono anche materia di studio per i medici di corte del re Enrico IV di Navarra. Come segno d'infamia dovevano portare cucita sul petto, o sulla spalla destra, una zampa d'oca dipinta in rosso e in testa un berretto tipico delle confraternite e degli iniziati. I piedi dovevano essere ben avvolti in calzature che ne nascondessero la presunta deformità: si raccontava infatti che avessero gli arti inferiori palmati, una caratteristica che li faceva identificare nella religione basca come i figli delle Lamie. Quale segreto nasconde questa «razza maledetta»? La loro vicenda misteriosa e tragica è una ferita ancora aperta nella storia dell'Europa, come dimostra l'enorme fascino che i Cagots ebbero sui nazisti, attratti dalla presunta esistenza di «razze» dotate di un DNA «diverso», quel codice genetico che legherebbe alcune minoranze europee fra di loro, frutto di una leggendaria discendenza da Lucifero.

Azioni, oggetti, luoghi ed eventi trovano in questo piccolo e prezioso libro una corrispondenza con un numero preciso, secondo l'interpretazione che si dà a i sogni in modo da indovinare il pronostico giusto per partecipare alle lotterie a premio basate appunto sull'estrazione di numeri vincenti. Il gioco del Lotto è la più popolare di simili lotterie, popolarissimo a Napoli (anche se non ha avuto qui le sue origini). Matilde Serao ha scritto che «il lotto è il largo sogno, che consola la fantasia napoletana», che ha alimentato soprattutto negli ambienti più poveri e popolari il sogno di una grande vincita capace di cambiare la vita. Ma al di là dell'azzardo vero e proprio, il gioco dell'estrazione dei numeri conserva un'innocua tradizione di allegra compagnia e di passatempo. Di cui è dimostrazione più evidente la tombola napoletana, tipico gioco natalizio basato proprio sull'estrazione dei 90 numeri per realizzare ambi, terni, quaterne, cinquine e tombole; puntualmente accompagnati dalle colorate definizioni della Smorfia. Questo volume riprende le definizioni della "Nuova Smorfia del Giuoco del Lotto" di Giustino Rumeo edita a Napoli 1866.

Overall Near Fine the summer issue with bottom corners creased two of the four numbers with "return to Pete" in red ink front covers. Laid in a 4 page handwritten letter from Reg Hall editor and publisher of Ethnic to Irwin Silber editor of the highly influential Sing Out ! A Folk Song Magazine which he co-founded with Pete Seeger and for which he served as editor from 1951 to 1967. Silber also founded Oak Publications. In the letter which begins " Dear Mr. Silber Thank you for your letter. I think it would be extremely important to us both to exchange copies of our magazines and I have entered your address in our files". Hall goes on to talk about Ethnic's editorial viewpoint apologizes for a misunderstanding over his reference to and use of the term "hootenanny" requests comments and criticisms discusses British traditional singers and offers his hospitality and advice on "who to see and hear and contact" for anybody coming to England. " In an aggressive style Ethnic championed the collection and study of authentic traditional style and repertoire in contradistinction to what its editors saw as a burgeoning revival movement based on false principles little knowledge and cosy middle-class fashion. The magazine included several important articles based on first-hand experience such as one on May Day at Padstow in issue number three and several on particular singers and musicians and its criticisms are also useful for evidence of a critical time in the post-war development of folklore studies and the folk-song and dance revival."
