Santa Eurosia. Un culto agrario dai Pirenei spagnoli alla Pianura Padana

La ricchissima bibliografia sui santi e la santità stranamente non contempla il profilo di una santa di cui, in particolare nelle regioni del nord Italia, sono presenti immagini, tele e patronati risalenti ai secoli XVI-XX: si tratta di santa Eurosia, una santa di origine boema del IX secolo, che, giunta sui Pirenei spagnoli per il matrimonio con un nobile del luogo, venne martirizzata dagli arabi. Il culto della santa fu assai presente nell'area padana e fortemente agricola per la sua funzione antitempestaria e di protezione dei raccolti. La Chiesa cattolica, nella proclamazione dei santi, privilegia le «virtù manifestate in modo eroico». Il martirio è la massima espressione della vita cristiana e dunque Eurosia fu riconosciuta santa per la motivazione più evidente. Tuttavia essa divenne una santa «specializzata» in ambito agrario, distinguendosi per la sua difesa delle campagne dalla grandine e da quanto potesse danneggiare i loro frutti. Elena Prandi ricostruisce l'arrivo e la diffusione in Italia del culto di Eurosia: dopo la battaglia di Pavia (1525), che sancì il predominio spagnolo in Italia, essa fu «adottata» soprattutto in ambito contadino e campestre sino a quando, seguendo la sorte dei santi specializzati in generale, la sua presenza si andò spegnendo sino a cessare all'inizio del XX secolo, al punto che se ne perdette la memoria. Ciò non toglie che le testimonianze patronali e pittoriche siano presenti là dove il culto fu più seguito, in particolare nel territorio mantovano.
