ill., br. State per entrare in un mondo che non è né fiaba né leggenda. Potreste considerare questo, libro una sorta di "elenco degli avvistamenti", poiché si basa su narrazioni popolari e credenze, ma anche su antichi documenti ufficiali che spesso risultano più inquietanti di un racconto dell'orrore. Questa sorta di bestiario non raccoglie semplicemente le descrizioni delle creature mitologiche del Giappone, ma cerca piuttosto di metterci al corrente degli stati d'animo, delle situazioni e dei luoghi che le hanno partorite, in bilico fra luce e ombra, fra ciò che si sa e non viene detto per timore e ciò che non si sa ma si vorrebbe scoprire. Per gustare queste pagine è sufficiente liberarsi di alcuni preconcetti e lasciarsi guidare in un mondo in cui, per esempio, un oggetto o un animale ottengono il potere di evolversi in creature mostruose se superano una certa età, un certo peso o una certa dimensione; in cui i cani-procione sono i detentori dell'arte della metamorfosi e le volpi hanno abitudini e cerimonie simili a quelle degli esseri umani; un mondo in cui una lanterna stregata può farti perdere la via, o in cui puoi morire dal terrore per aver visto il volto ghignante di una vecchia che lava i fagioli in un fiume; un mondo in cui chiedersi costantemente se ciò che abbiamo visto è reale o il frutto della nostra immaginazione, della nostra paura del buio, della nostra repulsione per lo sporco, della nostra diffidenza per il diverso.
