RARE EDITION of a selection from 'Irish Melodies' by Thomas Moore (1779-1852) - an Irish poet, singer, songwriter, and entertainer, best known for 'Irish Melodies' (published also under various titles, such as 'Songs of Ireland', 'Irish Tunes' etc.) which became enormously popular throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, for example 'Believe Me If All Those Endearing Young Charms', which is included in this volume. Moore began writing these poems following a request by the publishers James and William Power to write lyrics to a series of Irish tunes with Sir John Andrew Stevenson as arranger of the music, and eventually the poems were published in ten volumes and a supplement between 1808 and 1834, the musical arrangements of the last volumes after Stevenson's death (1833) being done by Henry Bishop. Contains b&w figures as illustrations on most pages. 150x100 mm. 64 pages. Brown leather gilt Hardcover. Cover and cover edges rubbed. Light ink stains on rear cover. Cover corners, front cover bottom edge and spine edges bumped. Spine upper edge tattered. Pages yellowing and rough-cut as published. br. I nostri Antenati sono ancora tra noi. Vivono in noi. Le loro credenze, i loro riti, le loro usanze, la loro religiosità, il loro linguaggio sopravvivono ancora oggi, dopo millenni, nelle nostre tradizioni popolari. Il folklore della città di Salerno e dei suoi territori, con il suo carattere marinaresco che si fonde con quello tipicamente delle campagne e delle montagne, è un chiaro esempio di come il lascito ancestrale dei nostri predecessori sia ancora vivo e vitale in Italia ed in generale in tutta Europa. Le popolazioni italiche prima, i Romani poi e, successivamente il popolo germanico dei Longobardi, hanno plasmato il nostro modo di essere odierno: il loro tributo, sia a Salerno che in tutta la Penisola, è ancora fortemente tangibile e continua ad essere tramandato nonostante esso sia occultato da una coltre che questo libro si prefigge coraggiosamente di dipanare. Le feste dell'anno, il ciclo della vita, le superstizioni, la credenza nel malocchio, nelle fatture, negli amuleti, in esseri soprannaturali come janare (streghe), diavoli, spiriti, munacielli e mazzamurelli (gnomi e folletti) costituiscono quel "Mondo Magico" delle tradizioni popolari nel quale confluiscono e si confondono elementi precristiani e religiosità popolare. L'eredità dei nostri Antenati è ancora viva in noi: scorre nelle nostre vene. L'augurio è che questo testo possa ridestare nel lettore il nobile spirito degli antichi ltalici, dei Romani e dei Longobardi che in lui ancora alberga. Prefazione di Luigi Maria Lombardi Satriani.
