‎ill., ril. Il libro del tè (1906) di Okakura Kakuzo (1862-1913) è divenuto negli anni un classico dell'incontro tra Oriente e Occidente ed è stato molte volte tradotto. Nonostante il titolo, il libro non va considerato un manuale sul tè. È piuttosto un inno alla cultura, all'estetica, allo spirito del tè quale simbolo, paradigma, vessillo dell'anima asiatica. Venne scritto da un appassionato ricercatore giapponese, lo scopo della cui esistenza fu di rinnovare e diffondere i valori dell'Oriente nel momento in cui il suo stesso paese sembrava volerli rinnegare per quelli occidentali. Questa nuova edizione contiene un ricchissimo apparato di note che spiegano i contenuti del libro che l'autore aveva omesso di illustrare, e che le varie edizioni internazionali hanno solo limitatamente trattato. Inoltre contiene una postfazione in cui viene ricostruita l'esistenza di Okakura in riferimento alla sua missione interculturale e allo sviluppo della spiritualità universale attraverso l'estetica e la pratica del tè come stile di vita. Okakura visse in Giappone in un periodo di grandi idealità e di radicali trasformazioni individuali e sociali tra lo sbigottimento per la forza dell'Occidente e l'ansia d'imitazione. Scrisse Il libro del tè al culmine degli opposti movimenti dell'occidentalizzazione del suo paese e della diffusione in Occidente dello spirito orientale, con la sua arte e i suoi valori religioso-filosofici. È chiaro che per resistere alle complessità di un compito come questo e alle forze in gioco erano richieste una genialità fuori del comune e una profonda conoscenza di entrambi gli universi culturali, ma soprattutto un amore senza condizioni per il sapere e per lo sviluppo dell'individuo e della società. Nel caso di Okakura questo amore prese la forma dell'arte e fece di lui una figura eccezionale nella storia dell'incontro-scontro tra Oriente e Occidente all'epoca delle trasformazioni moderne di entrambi. A considerarla retrospettivamente, la formazione di Okakura sembra essere stata un percorso programmato passo per passo per rispondere allo scopo che sarebbe divenuto quello della sua esistenza. Il libro del tè è anche il fil rouge che lega una vita esemplare al proprio destino interiore: una suggestione archetipica per ciascuno di noi, oggi e sempre.‎
