DISTORTED IDEALS IN GREEK VASE-PAINTING The World of Mythological Burlesque
Cambridge University Press. Very Good in Near Fine dust jacket. 2008. Hardcover. 052189641X . Remainder mark black marker line to top textblock. Else very light shelfwear to book. Dustjacket is protected in mylar. ; This book examines Greek vase-paintings that depict humorous burlesque and irreverent images of Greek mythology and the gods. Many of the images present the gods and heroes as ridiculous and ugly. While the narrative content of some images may appear to be trivial others address issues that are deeply serious. When placed against the background of the religious beliefs and social frameworks from which they spring these images allow us to explore questions relating to their meaning in particular communities. Throughout we see indications that Greek vase-painters developed their own comedic narratives and visual jokes. The images enhance our understanding of Greek society in just the same way as their more sober siblings in "serious" art. ; 1.04 x 9.31 x 6.34 Inches; 450 pages . Cambridge University Press hardcover

WALTER FRIEDRICH OTTO
WALTER PATER
STUDI GRECI. A CURA DI PAOLA COLAIACOMO.
Collections of Essays are anthologies that have been compiled in order to demonstrate the works of a number of essayists. The list of essayists who have been active throughout the world and throughout time, is extraordinary. Descrizione bibliografica Titolo: Studi greci Titolo originale: Greek Studies. Warner Marina edited and with An Introduction by
Wonder Tales
New York: Farrar Straus & Giroux. New in New dust jacket. 1996. First Publisher Edition. Hardcover. Once upon a time in the Paris of Louis XIV five ladies and a gentleman - all of them urbane aristocrats - seized on the new enthusiasm for "Mother Goose stories" and decided to write some of them down. Telling stories resourcefully and artfully was a key social grace for them and when they wrote down these elegant narratives they consciously invented the modern fairy tale as we still know it today. For this beautiful anthology of six masterpiece Wonder Tales Marine Warner invited the collaboration of five writers with a special sympathy for the French stories they render her in burnished cunning and amusing English. "The White Cat" "The Subtle Princess" "Bearskin" "Starlight" The Counterfeit Marquise" and "The Great Green Worm" are as unforgettable today as they were when they were first published centuries ago. Wonder was the key to the stories and each tale abounds with transformations and magic. Drawings included. ; 16mo - over 5¾ - 6¾" tall . Farrar Straus & Giroux hardcover

Warner Rex Foreword
Encyclopedia of World Mythology
Galahad Books NY 1975. 1st edition. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. "Every people in the world has its own myths; but it is very obvious that many of their myths are strikingly similar. These similarities may be accounted for by assuming a common racial origin at a very remote period as for example in the case of the Indo-Europeans who are also linked by language. But sometimes are found in the stories of peoples who can have had no geographical or racial connections with each other. Human beings it would seem while unlike each other in many ways have always still more in common and their imagination when confronted with similar events will react to them in much the same way."
