Because the Celts themselves had no written traditionJoy Chant has chosen to tell their magnificent legends as they had been told in their own time - by bards around a campfireor at the courts of their High Kings. And for time and place she has chosen the last great Celtic court - that of King Arthur - setting each tale within a framework that includes a note about the historical or cultural background. Each legend is illuminated by the paintings of George Sharpwho worked closely with the author and editor every step of the way.In addition to the full colour plates and the illustrationsDavid Larkinart designer for the bookhas selected Celtic decorative patternsmaps and reproductions of their marvellous bronze and gold artifacts to enhance the stories and notes. The result is high dramaan extraordinary overview of the legends of the Celts placing them in relation to the state of mind of Arthur's people as they gathered themselves for the final defence of their way of life.Herethenis a unique volume that combines rich visual imagery with sweeping epicand captures the lives of the Celts through the great historic myths that bred them. Joy Chant is best known as a writer of fantasy.Readers first encountered her imaginary world of Vandareipeopled by the Khentoreiwandering nomads whose gods include a magnificent equine divinityalong with many other races and tribes in 'Red MoonBlack Mountain'and 'Grey Mane of Morning.' George Sharp started painting professionally in 1975doing book covers and a wide variety of commissions for various kinds of illustration requirements.'The High Kings' is his first full-length book of illustration. His paintings are always meticulously authenticand in facthe became so fascinated by his subject that he sought out Celtic artifacts in museums all over Britainhad costumes woven to Celtic patterns for his modelsand himself re-created an actual full-scale replica of the marvellously engineered andof coursecarved and decorated Celtic chariot. Earlier he had grown up in NottinghamEnglandcompleting his artistic education at the Nottingham School of Art.He has been a typographer and graphic designerart director and creative director in advertisingand eventually Senior Lecturer in Graphic Design at the Middlesex Polytechnic in Londona position he left to follow his full-time painting careerof which this book is one happy result. Chaudhuri Pramit
THE WAR WITH GOD Theomachy in Roman Imperial Poetry
Oxford University Press. Fine in Fine dust jacket. 2014. Hardcover. 0199993386 . Epic and tragedy from Homer's Achilles and Euripides' Pentheus to Marlowe's Tamburlaine and Milton's Satan are filled with characters challenging and warring against the gods. Nowhere is the theme of theomachy more frequently and powerfully represented however than in the poetry of early imperial Rome from Ovid's Metamorphoses at the beginning of the first century AD to Statius' Thebaid near its end. This book -- the first full-length study of human-divine conflict in Roman literature -- asks why the war against god was so important to the poets of the time and how this understudied period of literary history influenced a larger tradition in Western literature. Drawing on a variety of contexts -- politics religion philosophy and aesthetics -- Pramit Chaudhuri argues for the fundamental importance of battles between humans and gods in representing the Roman world. A cast of tyrants emperors rebels iconoclasts philosophers and ambitious poets brings to life some of the most extraordinary artistic products of classical antiquity. Based on close readings of the major extant epics and selected tragedies the book replaces a traditionally Aeneid-centric view of imperial epic with a richer dialogue between Greek and Roman texts contemporary authors and diverse genres. The renewed sense of a tradition reveals how the conflicts these works represent constitute a distinctive theology informed by other discourses yet peculiar to epic and tragedy. Beginning with the Greek background and ending with a look ahead to developments in the Renaissance this book charts the history of a theme that would find its richest expression in a time when men became gods and impiety threatened the very order of the world. ; 416 pages . Il serpente intrappolato-The trapped snake. Favole popolari piemontesi di nonno Renzo. Vol. 2
ill., br.
