Thomas Donald; & Henry Mayhew
The Victorian Underworld
New York: New York University Press 1998. BRAND NEW in a BRAND NEW dust jacket. Perfect condition. NO chips. NO tears. NO creases. Bright clean square and tight. Sharp corners. NO owner's name or bookplate. NOT a remainder. NOT a library discard. Fresh and crisp -- obviously never read. 1998. First American Edition. 55 illustrations from period sources. A fascinating look at Victorian society's underbelly where prostitutes thieves beggars cheats forgers and pickpockets thrived by preying on rich and poor alike. Includes material from the life stories of criminals as recorded by Henry Mayhew 1812-1887. Bound in the original black boards lettered in shiny gold on the spine. From the Dust Jacket: "William Makepeace Thackeray wrote that the wonders of the Victorian underworld 'have been lying by your door and mine ever since we had a door of our own.' Donald Thomas here pushes open that door to reveal a world both strange and strangely familiar inviting casual voyeur and serious historian alike to cross its threshold. Applying his talent for colorful biography to chronicle an entire age Thomas shows us through the eyes of its inhabitants the teeming underbelly Defined by night houses and cigar divans populated by street people like the running-patterer with his news of murder and entertainers like the Fire King the underworld was an insular yet diffuse community united by its deep hatred of the police. In its gin shops and taverns thrived thieves and beggars cheats forgers and pickpockets preying on rich and poor alike. Career criminals often showed a craftsmanship that would put their descendants to shame. It took true professionals to remove the modern equivalent of twenty million dollars from the Bank of England. In one case conspirators even recruited officers from Scotland Yard. Bringing to light the ugly realities of daily life in the underworld Thomas also tours the convict hulks and Dickensian prisons of the day to paint a grim picture of the losers in the mounting war on crime. Rich in anecdote and vividly recounted The Victorian Underworld brings the past alive like few recent works of history." Keywords: Charles Dickens 20 citations for him in index. Two hundredweight of Victorian golden route for Paris in sealed bullion boxes within a twin-locked burglarproof safe under constant guardwas inexplicably transformed into lead shot.Though the consignment had been weighed and its seals checked at every stage of the journeythe skill of the cracksman made it impossible to say even in which country the crime had occurred. Half a century lateron the eve of King Edward VII's visit to the Irish International Exhibitionthe Crown Jewels of Ireland vanished from under twenty-four hour security in Dublin Castleless than fifty yards from police and military headquarters. 'A case for a Sherlock Holmes to investigate' reported the Daily Express.By the time that the scandal was laid to resttwo members of the viceroy's court and a policeman had been shot deadwhile a number of eminent reputations had been destroyed. In 1913 Max Mayer's great creationa rose-tinted pearl necklacewas the finest in the world with a modern value of some seven million pounds. The box holding it left Paris safely. When opened in London it contained only lumps of sugar. Scotland Yard and the insurers had no hope of recovering the necklace except by an elaborate confidence trick on the thieves themselves. GUMSHOE: Reflections In A Private Eye
Boston: Little Brown & Co. 1988. For anyone who has ever wondered how it really is who has ever thought about becoming a private detective this is a "must-read" memoir by a tenured philosophy professor who left a prestigious eastern university to work as a five-dollar-an-hour apprentice operative in San Francisco and at the time of the book had been at it for over ten years. His cases include the search for drug money hidden under attic floorboards; retrieving a kidnapped child from India and trying to save the life of a man sentenced to the gas chamber but it's less case histories than the story of a man who learns to love his work and comes to see it as a kind of obscure art form. Top edge of text somewhat foxed; small light stain at bottom of fore edge a few pages with lightly soiled spots. Overall boards and text are clean and unmarked tight and square not remaindered. The dustjacket shows wear around the edges at the corners and spine ends with a vertical crease on the spine. There are three or four small closed tears on the edges and some creasing. That said the jacket remains 98% whole with no significant damage to printing or pictorial design. It is not price-clipped. An unusal book either as a memoir or true crime collectable. First Edition First Printing. Hard Cover. Very Good/Good Plus to Very Good. Little Brown & Co. Hardcover
