A young woman Maria Marten was shot dead by her lover William Corder. The two had arranged to meet at the Red Barn a local landmark before eloping to Ipswich. Maria was never seen alive again and Corder fled the scene. He sent letters to Marten's family claiming that she was in good health but her body was later discovered buried in the barn after her stepmother spoke of having dreamed about the murder. Corder was tracked down in London where he had married and started a new life. He was brought back to Suffolk and found guilty of murder in a well-publicised trial. He was hanged at Bury St Edmunds in 1828 and a huge crowd witnessed the execution. The story provoked numerous newspaper articles songs and plays. The village where the crime had taken place became a tourist attraction and the barn was stripped by souvenir hunters. The plays and ballads remained popular throughout the next century and continue to be performed today." May God Have Mercy : A True Story of Crime and Punishment
New York:: W. W. Norton & Company 1997. Bright shiny clean square and tight. Sharp corners. The Dust Jacket would also be FINE but for a touch of light rubbing. No chips. No tears. NOT price clipped 27.50. No owner's name or bookplate. No remainder mark. Pages are fresh and crisp -- probably never read. No underlining. No highlighting. No margin notes. Illustrated with a crime scene map and numerous photographs. "First Edition" is so stated with complete number row 1234567890 on the copyright page. Index. Bound in the original gray boards with a red spine lettered in shiny silver. From the Dust Jacket: "In some states by law in others by tradition judges imposing a sentence of death complete the grim ritual with the words 'May God have mercy on your soul.' In 1982 in Grundy Virginia a young miner named Roger Coleman was sentenced to death for the murder of his sister-in-law. Ten years later Coleman's case had become an international cause celebre as a result of the extraordinary efforts of Kitty Behan a brilliant and dedicated young lawyer who devoted two years of her life to gathering evidence of Coleman's innocence. Despite the mounting demands of the public the media and world religious leaders that Coleman's conviction be reexamined the courts refused to consider new evidence because of a lawyer's mistake: years earlier an appointed lawyer had filed a document one day late. The governor of Virginia offered Coleman only one chance for a reprieve -- the opportunity to take a lie-detector test on the morning of his scheduled execution. MAY GOD HAVE MERCY explores the legal and moral complexities of this dramatic case with devastating impact.". First Printing of the First Edition. Hard Cover.
