‎My Experiences At Scotland Yard‎

‎New York: A. L. Burt Company. Very Good. 1923. Reprint. Hardcover. This book is in Very Good condition and is lacking a dust jacket. The book and its contents are in mostly clean bright condition. The spine ends and corners of the book covers have some light bumping and rubbing. The lettering on the spine has dulled. The text pages are mostly clean and bright. There is a previous owner's inked name on the front pastedown page. "After three years at the Native Lands Office in Suva Thomson resigned from colonial service and returned to England in 1893 due in no small part to the deteriorating health of his wife. There he embarked on a career as a writer drawing on his experiences in the South Sea Islands to produce South Sea Yarns 1894; written in Fiji The Diversions of a Prime Minister 1894 about his government work in Tonga and The Indiscretions of Lady Asenath 1898. Basil Thomson used his Fijian assistants to organise the first ever done census of Fijian marriage on Viti Levu. He found that the Fijians did not marry as claimed in the specialised literature their mother's brother's daughter but married any girl and recalculated her kinship status after the marriage so as to address her by the term meaning mother's brother's daughter. This result was anathema to Radcliffe-Brown's anthropology school and was ignored. Later Lvi-Strauss would not take it into account either. But anthropologists of the time would not try to build any complete census of any culture trait. The result was that their material was partly insufficiently documented but they would not recognise it even today." from Wikipedia . A. L. Burt Company hardcover‎

‎The Criminally Insane: A Community Follow-up of Mentally Ill Offenders‎

‎Chicago & London: The University of Chicago Press 1979. NOT a library discard. Fine condition in a Very Good dust jacket. The spine of the jacket is uniformly sun-faded but all of its lettering remains clear and distinct. NO chips. NO tears. NO creases. Sharp corners. NO owner's name or bookplate. Pages are crisp clean and unmarked. 1979. First Printing of the First Edition. Tables. Graphs. List of chapter notes. Bibliography. Index. A volume from the publisher's Studies in Crime and Justice series. Bound in the original gray cloth stamped in bright silver on the spine. From the dust jacket: "THE CRIMINALLY INSANE is the largest scale in-depth follow-up study on mentally ill criminals yet to appear. This book challenges the assumption that inmates of maximum-security mental hospitals are extraordinarily violent and questions the necessity for maintaining maximum-security institutions which currently house some 15000 persons in the United States. In 1971 586 patients were released from a Pennsylvania maximum-security hospital for the criminally insane. They were not considered officially 'cured' but a federal court held that their commitments had been unconstitutional. Through exhaustive examination of hospital and police records and interviews with hospital administrators and the subjects themselves Thornberry and Jacoby assess the processes by which the patients had been retained in confinement the impact of their release upon their communities and their ability to adjust to the freedom of community life. The authors demonstrate that the patients did not display a significant level of violent behavior during confinement nor did they pose a major threat to society after release. In fact their social and psychological adjustment to community life is shown to have been comparable to that of non-criminal mental patients. Yet despite these findings the subjects had been retained in maximum-security confinement for an average of fourteen years because they were predicted to be violent and 'dangerous' to society. The authors explain this inaccuracy by a process called 'political prediction' in which clinicians avoid any potential risks to the community the reputation of their hospitals and their careers by consistently overpredicting dangerous behavior. THE CRIMINALLY INSANE will stimulate response from professionals in a wide variety of fields including law criminology psychiatry and sociology and from anyone concerned with society's responsibility to the mentally ill offender." . ‎Tidyman Ernest‎

‎DUMMY‎

‎Boston: Little Brown & Co. 1974. Tidyman an Academy Award-winning screenwriter of 'The French Connection' and author of the "Shaft" novels wrote this True Crime account of one of the most unusual murder cases in the history of the U.S. criminal justice system. In 1965 Donald Lang a young African American was arrested for the murder of a Chicago prostitute. He was later accused of a second murder and thought to be responsible for other deaths as well. Lang was poor; he was also illiterate deaf and dumb and could not understand sign language. He presented the criminal justice system with a defendant who was unable to communicate and could not therefore defend himself. A lawyer named Lowell Myers who was also deaf was appointed to defend Lang. Tidyman has written the story of two men's years of confrontation with a legal system unprepared to handle the case of a man whose disabilities put him outside the system's own rules. Red cloth boards show some edgewear; top edge of text is foxed; a couple of pages are dogeared o/w boards and text are clean tight and square. Dustjacket is whole but worn at edges corners and spine ends with a small closed tear at top of front panel which also shows some damage where small price sticker was removed. A decent reading copy. Book Club BCE/BOMC. Hard Cover. Good Plus/Good Plus. Little, Brown & Co. Hardcover‎

‎Tig Hague‎

‎Zone 22‎

‎Penguin Scoresby VIC Australia 2008. Trade Paperback. As New. 387 pages. Multiple copies of this title available. This book is an unread copy. Covers have no creasing or wear. Spine is uncreased. Pages are clean and unmarked and in excellent condition. When Tig hague kissed goodbye to his girlfriend Lucy he was already thinking of his return. The couple were going house-hunting looking for their first home together. Tig was only going to be away for a few days on a routine business trip - the annual highlight of an otherwise unglamourous job working on the Russian desk of a London bank. But just hours later something went wrong at Moscow airport. Very wrong. Misunderstanding a request from customs for a backhander to speed his progress into the country Tig was pulled to one side to have his bag searched. A deliberate inconvenience he thought. But Tig's world was about to implode with dizzying terrifying speed. A tiny lump of hashish nothing more than detritus from a recent stag weekend was discovered in the pocket of an old pair of jeans. Too small to warrant anything more than a slapped wrist back home he hadn't even known it was there. Tig was in Moscow's notorious Piet Central jail by nightfall - and that was just a stepping stone on his way to prison camp Zone 22 in the bleak remote wastes of Mordovia. He wouldn't be returning home for years. Zone 22 is the shocking story of a young Englishman's struggle to survive the brutal corrupt almost medieval conditions of a prison camp in Putin's Russia - a gripping contemporary story in the tradition of Papillion and Midnight Express.
