‎TAKVÎM-I VEKÂYI [THE FIRST OFFICIAL NEWSPAPER OF THE IMPERIAL OTTOMAN].‎

‎["WEIRD ART OF A FRENCH NAMED DAGUERRE": DAGUERRE'S INVENTION IN THE FIRST OTTOMAN OFFICIAL NEWSPAPER] Takvim-i Vekâyi: Def'a 186, fî 19 S[aban] sene 1255 [i.e. Calendar of events: No 186, October 28, 1839].‎

‎Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original newspaper taken from a volume. Folio. (42,5 x 28 cm). In Ottoman script (Old Turkish with Arabic letters). [5] p.  Extremely rare early issue of this first official newspaper of the Ottoman Empire after the proclamation of Reform (Tanzîmât) in 1839,  informed Daguerre's new and weird invention ("photography" as it would be called in the 1850s) to the Ottoman peoples and readers. The article reads: "It is the talk of the town, steam engines have been able to run on rails in factories in recent years. Meanwhile, a man carefully focused on his thoughts so much and the craft turned into a strange art, and finally, a coquettish mirror (surface) appeared. This skillful Frenchman named Daguerre drew the lines of objects by reflecting the sunlight with the methods of the different science of art he learned, drew the contours of the objects, and gave 20 years secretly and openly to the formation of this strange art. Finally, he reached the goal and this event won the appreciation and admiration of everyone. This is to say, the image of the object, in the form of a large or small box free from light, is pictured inside by passing through the glass in front of it. In order for the reflected picture to be captured on a surface, some chemicals must be prepared. Daguerre has achieved this mix based on his experience. This substance applied on the plate is called iodine. After the plate is kept in the vapor of the iodine for a few minutes, it is immediately placed in the dark box, and the image passing through the window of the box is pictured for five minutes. Considering that some of the things that should be hidden are captured like this, it will be understood what a valuable invention this is...". In the continuation of the article, it is written that an Englishman named Talbot (Henry Fox Talbot) found the same thing with almost the same processes (!), but Daguerre had taken pictures before. Takvim-i Vekâyi was the first fully Turkish-language newspaper. It was launched in 1831 by Sultan Mahmud II, taking over from the Moniteur ottoman as the Official Gazette of the Ottoman Empire. With the beginning of the Tanzimat reform period, Takvim-i Vekayi produced versions in multiple language editions. It ceased publication in 1878, resuming in 1891-2, before being closed again. It resumed in 1908 until around 1922. In the 1831-1878 period it published a total of 2119 issues - an average of slightly less than one a week. ‎

‎Foto Galatasaray: Studio practice by Maryam Sahinyan.‎

‎New English Paperback. Small 4to. (26 x 22 cm). In English and Turkish. 328 p., color and b/w photos. Foto Galatasaray: Studio practice by Maryam Sahinyan. Foto Galatasaray project is based on the re-visualization of the complete professional archive of Maryam Sahinyan (Sivas, 1911 ¿ Istanbul, 1996), who worked as a photographer at her modest studio in Galatasaray, Beyoglu uninterruptedly from 1935 until 1985. The archive is a unique inventory of the demographic transformations occurring on the socio-cultural map of Istanbul after the declaration of the Republic and the historical period it witnessed; it is also a chronological record of a female Istanbulite studio photographer¿s professional career. Armed with the wooden bellows camera her father originally took over from a family that immigrated from the Balkans in the aftermath of the First World War and the black-and-white sheet film she continued to use until 1985, Sahinyan, in a sense, arrested time ¿ both against the technological advancements photography was experiencing and contemporary trends. In the end, she created an unparalleled visual coherence without compromising her technical and aesthetic principles. Consisting entirely of black-and-white and glass negatives, the physical archive of Foto Galatasaray is a rare surviving example of the classical photography studios of Istanbul¿s recent past. Changing hands after Sahinyan left the studio in 1985, the archive was transferred to a storehouse belonging to Yetvart Tomasyan, owner of Aras Publishing. Twenty-five years later, approximately 200,000 negatives in the archive were, over the course of two years, sorted, cleaned, digitized, digitally restored, categorized and protected by a team under the direction of artist/researcher Tayfun Serttas. Foto Galatasaray was never as visible as some of the elite photography studios, famous since the 19th century, like Phebus, Andriomenos or Sabah. Nonetheless, it played an important role in representing the middle and lower classes that ensured the continuity of the studio. Sahinyan was a devout Armenian woman, and her identity created a closely-knit circle that.‎

Üsküdar in engravings.= Gravürlerde Üsküdar. "Most of Western voyagers and artists produced their engravings in Istanbul. Between Istanbul engravings those of Üsküdar have a special place. Üsküdar was the break point for tthe Eastern voyagers going to the west and westerns voyagers going to Jerusalem or Asia. It was a place to see its own beauties witth the possibility to see the other side also and it became a zone for the engraving masters. We prepared a very beautiful exhibition following this art and history. During five hundred years since the beginning of the engraving until our days, we prepared some documents of engraving which brought to us the daily life of Üsküdar in ancient times and we collected them by the title of Üsküdar. ‎New English Original bdg. HC. In special publisher's box. Oblong 4to. (30 x 34 cm). In English and Turkish. Reprint 1955 panorama of Istanbul sized 13x104 cm, and 8 p. bilingual text in English and Turkish by Sinan Genim. Archaeological evidence of human habitation in the area within the city walls revealed by recent excavations shows that Istanbul's past goes back 8000 years. Moving several thousand years forward in time, the first pictorial record of the city, known successively as Lygos, Byzantion, Antoninia, Nea Roma, Konstantinopolis, Kostantiniyye, and finally Istanbul, is the Tabula Peutingeriana (the Peutinger Map). For centuries the city was an inspiration for artists, one of whom, Melchior Lorichs, drew the first panorama of the city in 1559, and this was followed by others over the centuries until the advent of photography. The earliest surviving panoramic photographs of the city are those taken by James Robertson in 1854,3 and this tradition was continued by Kargopoulo, the Abdullah Brothers, the Giilmez Brothers, Guillaime Berggren, and Sebah & Joaillier.‎

‎New English Paperback. Pbo. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In English, Judeo - Spanish and Turkish. Color ills. 360 p. Mint. Including 4 CD, 1 DVD. The Maftirim repertoire, born in Edirne, the ancient capital of the Ottoman Empire is an example of Jewish mystic music. This music came to our days by being orally transmitted from master to student. However, with this form of transmission the number of these liturgical songs that arrived to our days has dropped from the thousands to very few indeed. The last three masters of this music in Turkey, David Behar, Hazzan Isak Maçoro and Hazzan David Sevi, who recorded the present work are maybe the last remnants of this old tradition. The present collection which is the result of five years of intensive work is the struggle to document and transmit whatever we have left of this kind of Turkish Sephardic liturgical music to the next generations. This unique collection should be of tremendous interest to everyone interested in Turkish Classical Music, Turkish Sephardic Music, Jewish Liturgical Music and any other kind of liturgical music. What will you find in the book that accompanies the album? A detailed introductory study on the Maftirim by Prof. Edwin Seroussi from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem; A repertoire of piyyutim by poets stretching from Rabbi Israel Najjara (ca. 1550-1625) to Isaac Eliyahu Navon (d. 1952) printed in the collection Shirei Israel be-Eretz ha-Qedem (Istanbul 1925/6) and performed by the Maftirim until the last generations; Square Hebrew text researched revised and formalized by Prof. Tova Be'eri from Tel Aviv University; Square Hebrew text typed of the piyyutim, vocalized and annotated by Prof. Isaac Jerusalmi (Hebrew Union College, Cincinnati) with romanized transliteration and Ladino, Turkish and English translations; Musical scores digitalized by Karen Gerson Sarhon and edited by Udî Mahmut Özbay, who also included the "usûls" and metronome values; Lavish pictures of the present-day synagogues of Turkey taken by the famous photographer Izzet Keribar. What will you find in the album? The recordings of the repertoire kept in the memory of three Maftirim masters of the last and present generation, David Behar, the late Hazzan Isak Maçoro and Hazzan David Sevi in 4 CDs (audio) and 1 DVD (visual). A total of nearly 6 hours of audio and visual recordings.‎

‎Chora: The scroll of heaven. Photos by Ahmet Ertug.‎

‎New English Original bdg. HC. In special publisher's box. Folio. (41 x 30 cm). In English. 257 p., 107 numerous color plts. Chora: The scroll of heaven. Photos by Ahmet Ertug. First Edition. The building that was originally the Monastery of the Holy Savior in Chora is regarded as one of the most sublime examples of Byzantine art because of its early 14th century mosaics and frescoes. The level of artistic achievement attained in the Chora frescoes parallels the Pre-Renaissance movement that began in Italy and heralds the advent of a new style in Byzantine art. Chora: The Scroll of Heaven takes the reader on a scholarly and artistic journey that delves all the details of this jewel-like structure. The book's text was written by Cyril Mango, one of the most respected names today in the field of Byzantine art history, while its photographs were taken by Ahmet Ertug, an internationally recognized architect and photographer. The photographs appearing in the book were exhibited at the International Byzantine Congress held in Paris in 2002, where they received many accolades. The exhibition was repeated at the Japan Foundation in Tokyo during August 2003 and at the New York Art Institute in May 2004. 30 by 41 cms., hardbound covered with Japanese cloth, presented in a slipcase. ‎New English Original bdg. HC. Oblong 4to. (22 x 30 cm). In English and Romanian. 115, [140] p., fully color ills. Byzantine manuscripts in Bucharest's collections.= Manuscrise bizantine în colectii bucurestene. Project coordinator: Ileana Stanculescu. From the first article: "From the photographs taken over time, we chose those which best capture a special artistic quality with their strictly documentary value. This selection of manuscripts ends before the dawn of the 16th century, given the common view that after the fall of Constantinople (1453) we can no longer speak of a truly Byzantine culture, but only of a Byzantine style, albeit one which continued to shine. The selection of images was also intended to emphasize not only the aesthetics of the illuminated folios, but also those details that are significant for the codices as a whole, things which would dryly translate today as typeface font type, page layout and binding. Far from the sight of all interested parties, the Byzantine manuscripts in the Bucharest repositories are still full of mysteries waiting to be discovered and explained by researchers. We present these images here to provide a platform for a wider discussion of the significance of the Byzantine legacy for Romanian pre-modern culture. For the identification and description of the items chosen we used several catalogues, either manuscript or in print, which we then compared with the corresponding labels used by the repositories. The bibliography at the end of the volume indicates the various catalogues used for each collection. We found a wealth of details pertaining to the manuscript collections of the Romanian Patriarchy in the album published by the archimandrite Policarp. This is an excellent occasion to thank the specialists involved in the inventory of the collection for the additional information they supplied. We extend our warmest gratitude to them. Here and there we updated and corrected the information found in the aforementioned sources in the light of recent research: the dating of ms. sl. II 280, from the Library of the Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church at the Antim Monastery. We thank Mrs Tatiana Popova (University of St. Petersburg in Severodvinsk), for the observation that we are dealing with a direct copy, made at the end of the 14th century, of the Russian metropolitan Kyprian's reworking (dated 1385) of the Ladder of John Climax. Ms. sl. II 280 belongs to a group of manuscripts kept at Antim Monastery, but originates from a collection in Slava Rusa, a settlement in Dobrogea and a known...".‎

This exhibition consists of a single painting: the famous portrait that the Ottoman Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror had painted by the Italian artist Gentile Bellini about five hundred years ago and is now in the collection of the National Gallery of London. The painting is a magnificent souvenir of a brief 'golden age' in a reminder that, as early as the Renaissance and under the leadership of a strong and foresighted ruler, Ottoman society, which always looked wetward, hd the chance to grasp universal civilization.‎

‎New English Paperback. Pbo. 4to. (28 x 24 cm). In English and Turkish. 79 p., color ills. Like moths to the flame: The Ottoman fire brigades.= Ates pervaneleri: Tulumbacilar. [Exhibition catalogue]. February 24 - May 31, 2011. 500 copies were printed. Our struggle, conducted under the direction of Alm I las beginning in 1005, to see that the machines and items used in, and the documents and photographs pertaining to the Cibali Tobacco and Cigarette Factory be returned to their rightful place, reached a positive conclusion in 2008, when these items were temporarily handed over to the Rezan Has Museum after being inventoried at the Museum for the History of Science and Technology in Islam. Following two years of restoration and conservation work, we held the first of a series of exhibitions about the Factory, titled "Like Moths to the Flame: The Ottoman Fire Brigades", in order to revive the spirit of the Cibali Tobacco and Cigarette Factory and to share with you t hi- important historical artifacts on their way back home. The "Like Moths to the Flame: the Ottoman Fire Brigad(-: features those indomitable heroes of the city of Istanbul, managed again and again to rise from the ashes. Heroes outfits, performers of daring acts, these brave characters fearir:ssly fought the fires that were Istanbul's greatest nightmare. Firei'vtj.i.t.(2rs, those voluntary soldiers of Istanbul, had their own unique culture, their own rally cries, attitudes, and sayings, their own characteristic relationships, and even veritable tradition of criminal incidents amongst their own, all of which provide insight into the street culture of the city of Istanbul, and the socio-cultural structure and state politics of the period. In addition to the artifacts and historical documents belonging to the Cibali Tobacco and Cigarette Factory, our exhibition also contains selected items from the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Directorate of Libraries and Museum's Firefighting Museum Collection and the Suna and Inan Kirac Foundation's Old Istanbul Photographs Collection. Numerous individuals worked together to make this exhibition happen, and to each of them we would like to express our thanks. First and foremost the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, but also the Atatark Library, our team who so painstakingly worked on the restoration and conservation of the works exhibited, Prof. Dr. Baha Tanman for his contributions, Galru Tanman, who was so generous with her support, and the Istanbul Research Institute, all of you have our eternal gratitude.‎

‎THEODORE GUDIN, (1802-1880), (Painter); JOSEPH JOHN SKELTON, (1783-1871), (Engraver).‎

‎[ENGRAVING] Incendie du quartier de Pera a Constantinople, 9 Aôut 1839. Painted by Theodore Gudin, (1802-1880); Engraved by Joseph John Skelton, (1783-1871).‎

‎Very Good French Original color copper engraving. Oblong folio. (26 x 36 cm). Description in French. Incendie du quartier de Pera a Constantinople, 9 Aôut 1839. Painted by Theodore Gudin, (1802-1880); Engraved by Joseph John Skelton, (1783-1871). Rare color engraved print. Shows 1839 fire in Pera area in Istanbul (probably that district is Kasimpasa which mostly mariners live in), and its chaos: hectic people have appeared on the roofs of the burning houses, law enforcement agencies are working, and the muezzin has been seen on balcony for 'selâ'. Jean Antoine Théodore Gudin was a French painter of the 19th century, born in Paris. He especially painted navy scenes, and was a pupil of Girodet-Trioson. Gudin was one of the first Peintres de la Marine, at the court of Louis-Philippe and Napoleon III. Gudin died at Boulogne-sur-Seine in 1880. His daughter Henriette Gudin also became a marine painter. Skelton was an English engraver. He was brother of William Skelton, and became an engraver specialising in topographical and antiquarian subjects. Before 1819 he went to live at Oxford. Later Skelton settled in France. He was elected a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London in 1825; his name disappears from its lists in 1844. At Oxford he published Oxonia Antiqua Illustrata (1823); Antiquities of Oxfordshire, from drawings by F. Mackenzie (1823); Pietas Oxoniensis, or Records of Oxford Founders (1828); and Engraved Illustrations of Antient Arms and Armour from the Collection at Goodrich Court from the Drawings, and with the Descriptions of Dr. Meyrick, (2 volumes, 1830). He also engraved the heading to the Oxford almanacks for the years 1815 to 1831, from drawings by F. Mackenzie and C. Wild; and executed a set of fifty-six etchings of the antiquities of Bristol after H. O'Neill. (Source: Wikipedia).‎
