The Socialist Soviet Republic of Armenia was founded in 1920. Diaspora Armenians were divided about this: supporters of the nationalist Dashnaksutiun did not support the Soviet state, while supporters of the Armenian General Benevolent Union (AGBU) were more positive about the newly founded Soviet state. From 1828 with the Treaty of Turkmenchay to the October Revolution in 1917, Eastern Armenia had been part of the Russian Empire and partly confined to the borders of the Erivan Governorate. After the October Revolution, Bolshevik leader Vladimir Lenin's government announced that minorities in the empire could pursue a course of self-determination. Following the collapse of the empire, in May 1918 Armenia, and its neighbors Azerbaijan and Georgia, declared their independence from Russian rule and each established their respective republics. After the near-annihilation of the Armenians during the Armenian Genocide and the subsequent Turkish-Armenian War, the historic Armenian area in the Ottoman Empire was overrun with despair and devastation. A number of Armenians joined the advancing 11th Soviet Red Army. Afterward, Turkey and the newly proclaimed Soviet republics in the Caucasus negotiated the Treaty of Kars, in which Turkey resigned from its claims to Batumi to Georgia in exchange for the Kars territory, corresponding to the modern-day Turkish provinces of Kars, Igdir, and Ardahan. The medieval Armenian capital of Ani, as well as the cultural icon of the Armenian people Mount Ararat, were located in the ceded area. Additionally, Joseph Stalin, then acting Commissar for Nationalities, granted the areas of Nakhchivan and Nagorno-Karabakh (both of which were promised to Armenia by the Bolsheviks in 1920) to Azerbaijan. From 12 March 1922 to 5 December 1936, Armenia was a part of the Transcaucasian SFSR (TSFSR) together with the Georgian SSR and the Azerbaijan SSR. The policies of the first Soviet Armenian government, the Revolutionary Committee (Revkom), headed by young, inexperienced, and militant communists such as Sarkis Kasyan and Avis Nurijanyan, were implemented in a highhanded manner and did not take into consideration the poor conditions of the republic and the general weariness of the people after years of conflict and civil strife. Such was the degree and scale of the requisitioning and terror imposed by the local Cheka that in February 1921 the Armenians, led by former leaders of the republic, rose up in revolt and briefly unseated the communists in Yerevan. The Red Army, which was campaigning in Georgia at the time, returned to suppress the revolt and drove its leaders out of Armenia. Convinced that these heavy-handed tactics were the source of the alienation of the native population to Soviet rule, in 1921 Moscow appointed an experienced administrator, Alexander Miasnikian, to carry out a more moderate policy and one better attuned to Armenian sensibilities. With the introduction of the New Economic Policy (NEP), Armenians began to enjoy a period of relative stability. Life under the Soviet rule proved to be a soothing balm in contrast to the turbulent final years of the Ottoman Empire. Very Good English Original two typewritten letters with autograph signed 'W. G. M. Edwards addressed to Hasan Halet Isikpinar. 23x15 cm. In English. 2 p. Some stains and tear on bottom. Texts: "My dear Hasan Halet, I wonder whether you could spare a few minutes of your time and come to see me Monday netween 11 and 12. I hope you are well and ssuccessfully busy. / Some weeks ago we spoke about an article you would write for the Chamber of Commerce Journal. Have you changed your mind? I would be glad to know whether you have begun the work on it and when you expect to send it to me. Sincerely yours, Signature.". Letterheads just phone number of its period and 'Arslanli Konak, Bebek-Istanbul' address. First letter's date is 18th October, second one is 11th November 1946. Edwards family was an English Levantine family who arrived in Constantinople after the Crimean war (1853). They had a Baker Shop in Pera. The baker shops were established by the English Baker family who arrived in Constantinople after the Crimean war (1853), and the English immigrant families of Edwards and Binns were also involved with these shops. These latter 2 families opened businesses in different sectors and neigbourhoods of Istanbul, however with time these businesses were either transferred to the Bakers or they merged through partnership with them. The founder of the Baker shops, George Baker was at that time already operating a substantial business in London. Soon after George Baker arrived in Istanbul, he formed a partnership with the Hayden family and together they opened two shops, one on the Grand Rue de Pera, at where Anadolu Han now stands, the other in nearby Galata, opposite Serdar Ekrem Street, on the corner looking out to the Galata tower. This partnership established in the 1860s remained firm till the end of the 1870s. With the end of this decade, Hayden and Baker went their own way, and Hayden retained these shops and Baker opened new retail outlets. One of these shops was again by the Galata tower, at Sahdegirmeni Street, and the other was next to the former Kanzuch pharmacy [Austrian run, in Pera?]. Soon after this first shop on the Grand Rue de Pera, George Baker opened his second shop where Sümerbank [central Pera, near the British Consulate] now stands. In these shops the Bakers sold a wide range of goods in including textiles, bedding, furniture and accessories. In addition to this they had by this time obtained the local representation of many foreign firms. A close friend of the Bakers, Cuthbert Evelyn Binns, became the manager of the Baker shops after WWI. The other English Levantine family of Edwards family firm, Edwards and Sons, merged with the G. & A. Baker company. At this time C.E. Binns was still the general manager, and W.G.M. Edwards continued his career as a member of the board of directors. Records show that between 1924-1925 W.G.M. Edwards continued his association with the local British Chamber of Commerce and in 1930 was elected as its president... (Source: Behzat Üsdiken with Levantineheritage translation). Hasan Halet Isikpinar, was a Turkish engineer and professor. He initially graduated from Robert College as an electrical engineer in 1916, being the first Turkish graduate of the engineering department. He advanced his studies to receive a degree of mechanical engineering from the same institution in 1922. After his assistantship in Robert College from 1923 to 1925, he attended Massachusetts Institute of Technology until 1928 and graduated as the first Turkish student of the university. He kept his tenure as a professor in Robert College in the department of engineering until 1934, where he contributed to the advancement of the department of electrical engineering to a significant extent. He led over 800 engineering projects in Turkey, majority of which being the first examples within the newly founded Turkish Republic. Limited reprint edition (all copies are numbered) of 1854-1855 Berlin edition of Salzenberg's book exemplifying a growing 19th-century appreciation of Romanesque and 'Byzantine' architecture. For the original edition see Blackmer 1483; Brunet V, 103. "Salzenberg's important work remains the major source of information about the mosaics of St. Sophia". (Blackmer). 1000 copies were printed for individual persons. This copy belonged to 'Ender S. Özer Bagciman. All copies were numbered. (651/1000). The churches Salzenberg describes illustrating the development of a Christian architecture away from the secular long nave basilica or of the classical temple (never intended for congregational use), to a Greek-cross plan with a central dome, allowing greater accessibility to the altar table. Most of the text is devoted to the cathedral of the Holy Wisdom [i.e. Hagia Sophia], built-in Constantinople for Justinian I by Anthemius of Tralles and Isidore of Miletus, who dared to set a large dome over a square with the support of pendentives, achieving, with eastern and western half-domes, an uninterrupted span of over 200 feet. This building provided a model or inspiration to architects of the Middle East and Europe seeking to experiment with central, domed structures.
