Daniel J. Goldhagen ripropone l'inquietante interrogativo di come abbia potuto il popolo tedesco, una delle grandi nazioni della civile Europa, compiere il più mostruoso genocidio mai avvenuto. Esaminando le figure degli «esecutori» e l'antisemitismo radicato nella società tedesca fra il 1933 e il '45, attingendo a materiale inedito e a testimonianze dirette, Goldhagen dimostra che i responsabili dell'Olocausto non furono solo le SS o i membri del partito nazista, ma i tedeschi di ogni estrazione sociale, uomini e donne comuni che brutalizzarono e assassinarono ebrei per convinzione ideologica e per libera scelta, senza subire pressioni psicologiche o sociali. On 1 April 1933, the Nazis carried out the first nationwide, planned action against Jews: a boycott targeting Jewish businesses and professionals. It was both a reprisal and an act of warning. On the day of the boycott, the SA stood menacingly in front of Jewish-owned department stores and retail establishments, and the offices of professionals such as doctors and lawyers. Throughout Germany, rare acts of violence against individual Jews and Jewish property occurred. Article subject written on cover and some underlining on first page, but all text is clear. He spent WWII in New York, teaching at the New School for Social Research. In the social field, he was vice president of the Jewish Colonization Association, board member of Alliance Israélite Universelle and ORT-Union, and a founder of the Centrale d'Oeuvres Sociales Juives in Brussels. He directed the Research Institute for Peace and Postwar Problems of the American Jewish Committee and from 1959 the Centre National des Hautes Etudes Juives, financed by the Belgian government. As president of the Belgian Committee for Refugees from Nazi Germany, he was instrumental in the rescue of the passengers from the ship St. Louis, which was sent back from Cuba and finally permitted to land in Antwerp. Per questo è necessario comprendere come il progetto politico sotteso allo sterminio degli ebrei sia drammaticamente vicino a noi nel tempo e nello spazio. Il libro porta l'attenzione del lettore proprio sulla "modernità" di Auschwitz, mettendo in luce la metodologia tecnico-burocratica dello sterminio, così come la strumentalità politica implicita nella logica della pulizia etnica.
