Royal octavo 9 1/2" x 6 1/2" bound in original publisher's brown cloth with gilt lettering to spine and pictorial to cover. First edition. John Sherman was a politician from the U.S. state of Ohio during the American Civil War and into the late nineteenth century. A member of the Republican Party he served in both houses of the U.S. Congress. He also served as Secretary of the Treasury and Secretary of State. Sherman sought the Republican presidential nomination three times coming closest in 1888 but was never chosen by the party. His brothers included General William Tecumseh Sherman; Charles Taylor Sherman a federal judge in Ohio; and Hoyt Sherman an Iowa banker. Besides his role in financial matters Sherman also participated in debate over the conduct of the war and goals for the post-war nation. Sherman voted for the Confiscation Act of 1861 which allowed the government to confiscate any property being used to support the Confederate war effort including slaves and for the act abolishing slavery in the District of Columbia. He also voted for the Confiscation Act of 1862 which clarified that slaves "confiscated" under the 1861 Act were freed in 1864 Sherman voted for the Thirteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution abolishing slavery. After some effort it passed Congress and was ratified by the states the next year. Fine study on the various kinds of English decorated trays produced between 1550 and 1850. Sections on each type (gold, silver-gilt, silver, Sheffield Plate, Japanned, papier-mache, pottery and porcelain, wood and parquetry, and Turnbridge Ware trays). 455 illustrations including 6 in color. Large folio, 12.5" high X 10" wide, 213 pages. This book will be securely wrapped and packed in a sturdy box and shipped with tracking.

She was one of America's best selling authors during her writing career and had three silent films adapted from her novels. 'To Have and to Hold' is the story of an English soldier, Ralph Percy, turned Virginian explorer in colonial Jamestown. Ralph buys a wife for himself - a girl named Jocelyn Leigh - little knowing that she is the escaping ward of King James I, fleeing a forced marriage to Lord Carnal. Jocelyn hardly loves Ralph - indeed, she seems to abhor him. Carnal, Jocelyn's husband-to-be, eventually comes to Jamestown, unaware that Ralph Percy and Jocelyn Leigh are man and wife. L'uomo è diventato per la natura più pericoloso di quanto un tempo la natura lo fosse per lui, mentre alle tante fratture sociali che ostacolano il cammino verso un'umanità unificata si è venuta ad aggiungere la contraddizione antagonistica tra il mondo di oggi e il mondo di domani. Muovendo da questa diagnosi, Hans Jonas cerca in questo lavoro di andare alle radici filosofiche del problema della responsabilità, che non concerne soltanto la sopravvivenza, ma l'unità della specie e la dignità della sua esistenza. La fin de siècle era alle porte e la Francia era fermamente determinata a fare dell'Esposizione universale del 1889 l'occasione per una grande celebrazione della Repubblica e del centenario della Rivoluzione. Occorreva un monumento senza precedenti, ed ecco che si decise di commissionare all'ingegnere Gustave Eiffel, da tempo impegnato nella costruzione di ponti e reti ferroviarie, la realizzazione di una torre in ferro alta trecento metri. Attraverso le fonti più diverse - giornali, interviste, carteggi - la storica Jill Jonnes ripercorre non solo le fasi della progettazione e della costruzione della torre, ma anche l'intero contesto parigino dell'Esposizione. Nel corso di quell'anno la capitale agì da potente richiamo per le più celebri e disparate personalità provenienti da tutto il mondo, suscitando entusiasmi e polemiche: se il gotha della capitale francese - tra cui scrittori del calibro di Guy de Maupassant e Alexandre Dumas figlio - accolse con orrore quella "torre vertiginosamente ridicola che sovrasta Parigi come l'oscura e gigantesca ciminiera di una fabbrica che tutto schiaccia sotto la sua barbara mole", ci fu chi, come Van Gogh e Gauguin, accorse in città in cerca di un successo che l'Esposizione poi non gli avrebbe dato.
