"E la sorte più buia, indecifrabile, non è quella della Woolf, piena d'immagini e di sogni, benché minacciata e visitata dalla demenza; ma della Mansfield, tesa e vibrante come acciaio, nella spietata ricerca della realtà, della verità, che la induceva a cieca crudeltà verso se stessa." Uno sguardo nell'intimità di una delle maggiori autrici di narrativa breve del Novecento, troppo presto strappata alla sua arte.

brossura Questo libro è stato impostato con uno scopo ben preciso: fornire uno strumento che permetta di accostarsi allo scrittore Kingsley Amis con quel tanto di consapevolezza indispensabile per distinguere il vario articolarsi dei movimenti letterari inglesi degli anni Cinquanta e il percorso di un autore poco conosciuto in Italia. L'esigenza di una conoscenza approfondita della produzione e degli autori del periodo post seconda guerra mondiale è importante: esplorare le tematiche care a Amis e ai suoi colleghi scrittori può essere un momento di riflessione e di conoscenza della prosa e della poesia anglosassone di quegli anni. Kingsley Amis (1922-1995) intellettuale e grande artista, fu un poeta e uno scrittore tradizionalista e affrontò varie tematiche sociali. Ebbe un grande successo con il romanzo "Lucky Jim" del 1954, scrisse inoltre "That Uncertain Feeling" del 1955, "I Like it Here" del 1958 e in particolare "One Fat Englishman" del 1963. La sua lunga produzione include anche varie raccolte di poesie quali "A Frame of Mind" del 1953 e "A Case of Sample" del 1956. Fu autore di numerosi saggi di costume tra i quali ricordiamo "The James Bond Dossier", saggio sul famoso eroe cinematografico.

Adriano Olivetti pensava che la conoscenza, la bellezza, in una parola la «grazia», dovessero accompagnare i giorni e le ore di tutte le vite umane che gli scorrevano accanto e che incontrava in fabbrica e nel mondo. Pensava di dover restituire in «grazia» ciò che gli era stato concesso in sorte. E a chi gli chiedeva quale fosse il contrario del peccato rispondeva senza esitazione che fosse non la «virtù» ma la «grazia». Pensava che generare bellezza fosse un dovere.
