1966. SMALLWOOD TSL ON PREMIER STATIONARY UNCOMMON 8 x 10 inches. Dated 19 January 1966 on Government letterhead with The Premier and St. John's printed at top. Old staple mark on top left corner red pen handwritting on top of letter two old fold marks otherwise good condition. Signed J.R. Smallwood. This letter from Smallwood is to an Ontario bookdealer ordering two books referring to a cheque which is not with this item only the letter. Interesting to see what Joey Smallwood is adding to his library two different copies of "History of Freemasonary". Joseph "Joey" Roberts Smallwood was Companion of the Order of Canada CC journalist politician and premier of Newfoundland from 1949-72 born 24 December 1900 in Mint Brook NL; died 17 December 1991 in St. John's NL. The leading proponent of Confederation in Newfoundland in the 20th century Joey Smallwood played an important role in bringing the province into Confederation in 1949. Smallwood is sometimes referred to as "the last Father of Confederation." During his lifetime he was also called "the only living Father of Confederation." Strong-willed and autocratic he was not always wise. As a communicator however he left a priceless legacy of historical and cultural knowledge to his beloved Newfoundland. "Creation of the Division of Agricultural Soils in the United States Department of Agriculture USDA in 1894 marked the beginning of a national commitment to soil science and soil survey activities. By 1899 soil surveyors had commenced field investigations for the first USDA soil surveys; one century later soil surveys have been published for most counties in the United States. The surveys - inventories consisting of narrative descriptions tables and maps - include a wealth of interpretive information about soil characteristics and properties and about their limitations and potentials. These interpretations of how soils respond to different uses assist land users in making appropriate decisions. br. Nell'estate del 1936 il giornalista statunitense Edgar Snow, da qualche anno inviato speciale nella Cina di Chiang Kai-shek, intraprese un viaggio che aveva già allora il sapore dell'epopea. Snow fu il primo occidentale a varcare il confine dei territori controllati dai rivoluzionari di Mao Zedong, incontrandoli da vicino, accolto come un amico nelle loro case-grotta dello Shaanxi settentrionale. Da quei nove formidabili mesi nacque un reportage definito all'epoca "lo scoop del secolo" e destinato a diventare celebre. In "Stella rossa sulla Cina" parlano dirigenti comunisti e combattenti volontari, contadini beneficiati dalla ridistribuzione delle terre e giovani donne lavoratrici, che rivendicano il diritto all'autogoverno contro l'occupazione giapponese, lottando con uno spirito di comunità e una caparbietà travolgenti. E parla lo stesso Mao, che racconta a Snow le imprese dell'Armata rossa, le peripezie mitiche della "Lunga marcia", la rottura con i nazionalisti del Guomindang e i fraintendimenti con un lontanissimo Stalin, ma anche i drammatici problemi della società cinese, le letture, l'antica fascinazione per i pensatori occidentali, i dettagli della vita privata. Calato nella quotidianità della rivoluzione, ammaliato dalla tempra morale dei suoi protagonisti, Snow riuscì a segnare il primo punto di contatto con una realtà antropologica, prima ancora che ideologica, rimasta fino ad allora misteriosa.
