St. Francis complete with stigmata is accompanied by a crucifix thorns a flagellum a book resting on a skull and a flowering plant supported by a decorative border. There is no signature that we can discern. The miniature is mounted on card with a hinged mat of brown cloth. Dimensions of the mat are 5 by 8 inches. A collection label is pasted beside the miniature not visible when the mat is closed " Collection of A. & C. Rub Hollywood California.". On the reverse in ink and an unknown hand is inscribed "A gift from Christian Rub Moving Picture Actor. 1935." Christian Rub whose wife's name was Amy was an Austrian actor with over 100 movies to his credit. His career spanned from silent films until 1952. He was the basis for the animation of Gepetto and also Gepetto's voice in Walt Disney's 'Pinocchio'. The vellum is lightly age-soiled but still bright and vibrant; the reverse of the mount has some old staining but overall this gives a very good appearance. n.a. hardcover

Miniature Johnson Dr. Samuel
THE HISTORY OF RASSELAS PRINCE OF ABISSINIA: A TALE
London: Jones & Co 1825. First Edition in Miniature. Leather. Near Fine. Miniature 2.6" x 4.5" rebound in full brown leather with gold stamping and labels 5 hubs engraved frontispiece of Dr Saml Johnson engraved title page 160 pages. Rare Miniature of the larger original published in 1759. Rasselas is Dr. Johnson's version of a morality tale about what constitutes True Happiness that rivals Voltaire's Candide. The volumes' working title was "The Choice of Life." The name "Rasselas" means "The Chief" of a tribe in exotic Abyssinia. The Great Cham & Lexicographer was pro-emancipation and had a black manservant whom he treated very well. This minor classic was supposedly written by the good Doctor to defray expenses expected with his mother's funeral. In fact there are signs of extensive revisions in early editions that suggest greater literary intentions. Rebound in fine brown morocco with gilt stamped title and author on the spine. Foxed engraved frontispiece and title page otherwise pages bright and legible with a tight binding tight. Lower margin of page 7 roughly torn away but not affecting the clear text. Handy edition of the redoubtable Dr. Johnson's famous dictionary with its marvellous definitions. Published in 1800 during the raging Napoleonic wars with France see also the somewhat later inscription to a French ship's captain below. Samuel Johnson 1709-1784 or more commonly "Dr. Johnson" or "the Great Cham" was a brilliant English writer devout Anglican and Tory who made his reputation as a poet essayist moralist literary critic biographer editor and most lastingly as a lexicographer. The eighth edition of A Dictionary of the English Language appeared in 1799; the ninth edition in 1805.
