SEFER MENORAT HA-MAOR ספר ×ž× ×•×¨×ª המ×ור
á¹¾ilna Vilnius: Defus Sh. Y. Fin A. Ts. Rosenḳrants M.M. Shrifá¹zeá¹tser 1881. Hardcover. Quarto 292 pages; VG-; newly rebound in quarter blue leather blue cloth covered boards paneled spine with burgundy label and gilt titling; page edges brittle pages age-toned; upper fore corner of first 96 pages clipped; text in Yiddish; scarce; shelved case 4. Isaac Aboab was an early 14th century Spanish Talmudic scholar and Kabbalist. "The Menorah of Light" is a collection of midrashic sermons. Per the Jewish Encyclopedia: "It has won considerable fame for the author though in his humility he assures his readers that he composed it chiefly for his own use as a public speaker. But besides this it has contributed probably more than any other medieval book to the popularization of rabbinical lore and to the religious edification and elevation of the masses. It belongs to that class of ethical works which sprang up in the thirteenth century in a time of reaction against the one-sided manner in which the Talmudic studies had been previously pursued.'. It was published with a Spanish translation Leghorn 1657 with a Hebrew commentary and a Judæo-German translation by Moses Frankfurter Amsterdam 1701 with a modern German translation by Fürstenthal and Behrend Krotoschin 1844-46. It was translated also into Yiddish Wilna 1880.";. 1331695. Shelved Dupont Bookstore. Defus Sh. Y. Fin, A. Ts. Rosenḳrants, M.M. Shrifá¹zeá¹tser hardcover books

Weininger Ben and Henry Rabin; foreword by Charles Schulz
Why Salt the Peanuts: Sayings of the 5¢ Psychiatrist
Los Angeles: The Guild of Tutors Press. Near Fine. c.1979. First Edition. Softcover. light wear to extremities generally a clean tight copy. Trade PB "A psychiatrist and a psychologist combine their wit and wisdom and their long experience in helping others to create and compile a collection of aphorisms such as you've rarely -- if ever -- read before!" More cynically one might put it this way: a psychiatrist and a psychologist team up with a small-time publisher to exploit a dubious tie-in with America's most popular comic strip. Author #1 "Dr. Ben" explains in his introduction that he had once tried an experiment by building a booth along the lines of Lucy's stand in the "Peanuts" strip and sitting behind it on the street for ten days during which "people of all ages" stopped by and the idea for a book was born. Wonder what the royalty arrangement with Schulz was like A few of these pithy sayings are snitched from time-honored sources Martin Buber the Talmud etc. and one is even credited to Schulz himself. . Hecht Ben stories; commentary and book by Florice Whyte Kovan
Rediscovering Ben Hecht Volume II: Art & Architecture on 1001 Afternoons in Chicago limited/numbered edition
Washington DC: Snickersee Press. Near Fine. 2002. Limited/Numbered Edition. Hardcover. plastic-comb binding with wraparound illustrated boards; no dust jacket as issued nice copy as-new except for a tiny circle of indentations on the front cover. B&W photographs facsimiles A collection of long out-of-print pieces by Hecht assembled within a kind of artist's-book format with numerous illustrations many of which are glued in by hand they are referred to by the publisher as "color appliques" and were replaced in later editions with printed versions; a few are printed on clear mylar. Artists and illustrators whose work is reproduced include Herman Rosse Frank Charles Peyraud Wallace Smith George Grosz and Jerome Blum; there is also some biographical information about Rosse and Grosz. Per the limitation page this is one of "75 copies of which this is Number 3. Numbers 1-24 comprise a uniform edition after which there will be a color change on the inner cover." Two NOTES: 1 the leaf containing pages 63/64 is bound in upside down; 2 the publication information refers to a "hand-painted frontispiece by Sheila Crider" but in the acknowledgements it's referred to as "our exuberant cover of Sheila Crider's paint on hand made paper"; it is quite clearly the latter not a pictorial "frontispiece" as that term is generally understood; at any rate it's very nice -- but it's the inner cover not the outer cover and is positioned beneath a clear mylar page on which the title of the volume is printed. .
