Cover features a vintage "horn book" design. A loose sheet "With Personal Greetings" signed by O. W. Ketcham at front of book. Text divided into three parts: 1 The Story of the House various components of the house enhanced by brickwork; 2 Molded Brick Forms; 3 Terra-Cotta Fire-Proof Materials. Book abounds with citations from prominent authors such as Walt Whitman John Greenleaf Whittier Owen Meredith John Ruskin etc. Very light bumping to corners of covers. Thin very faint three inch line page 35 from what appears to be blue pencil otherwise very good clean condition. Following the title of the volume is explanatory text that reads: "Being Some Suggestions in Brickwork from the Catalogue of O. W. Ketcham.of Philadelphia." In the Foreword the author writes that the book aims to provide "a few suggestions of what may be accomplished by the use of plain and moulded brick" i.e. molded terra-cotta. Text on title page states: "Printed by Edward Stern and Co. Incorporated Philadelphia 1899 from plates made by the Photo-Chromotype Engraving Co." A handsome beautifully designed and executed publication. First edition thus of this splendid sample advertising window display for ornate plaster decorated wooden mouldings for plate rails chair rails and wood mouldings in Victorian homes to be paired with the famed Thibaut wallpapers. These mouldings feature vivid paint colours emphasizing jewel tones such as greens blues reds burgundies and even pale pinks as well as white mouldings most of them elaborately decorated and with gilt paint highlights and could be purchased in 6 and 12 foot lengths. These ornamental mouldings often served to protect wallpapers from being rubbed and worn by furniture and artwork as well as accenting the beauty of the wallpaper designs. Thibaut 1857-1921 founded the famed wallpaper firm in New York in 1886 and also maintained stores in Brooklyn Boston and later New Jersey. At one time they were heralded as the world’s largest wallpaper company and would continue to be family owned through three generations before selling it to their employees and subsequently sold to RPM in 1976. Thibaut continues selling wallpapers fabrics fine furniture and is considered the oldest continuously operating wallpaper company in the United States. The 48-50 E. 13th Street address in New York begins appearing in newspaper advertisements and directories about 1894-1895. An intriguing Post-World War II archive of original typescript manuscripts with 65 tipped-in photographs and numerous scarce offprints and preprint articles tracing Garlick’s groundbreaking innovations in developing chemical treatments to preserve wood for public utility poles homes and businesses. Garlick 1901-1974 had developed and patented a process for pressure-treating wood with Pentachlorophenol PCP and other chemicals as well as a spray-on mixture for telephone poles utility light poles and other existing structures. Following World War II there was a race to protect woods to insect and fungus predation which at the time imperiled the viability of using wood products in construction for the Post-War housing boom. These typescripts and offprints with original photographs taken over multiple years detail the Protection Products Co. system for also protecting flooring window frame sills frames boxes house siding doors and other architectural milled products to substantially expand their usable life spans. Also shown are tests showing before and after tests of wood products with their coatings as opposed to those left uncoated how it prevented cracking warping bubbling of paint and more. PCP used as both pesticide and disinfectant has been largely banned in most countries and although still legal in the United States is largely unavailable to home construction and restricted to utility pole and railroad tie preservatives. Chicago IL: Repp & Herlin Architects John Hocke Architect Chicago Technical College 2721 So. Michigan Ave. 1928; ca. 1928. Two works. Oblong folio. 1st. - 26.75 x 16.5 in. 6 leaves all cyanotypes stapled at gutter margin w/ brown-paper spine wrapping fold & crease marks a couple leaves w/ minor closed tears still VG; 2nd -- 16.3 x 10.3 in. 4 leaves cyanotypes stapled at gutter margin w/ center crease NF. First editions of these scarce Jazz Age blueprints published by the Chicago Technical College in the 1920s as samples for their architectural students featuring the projects of former graduates. The first project for an apartment building on the corner of E. 64th & Langley Ave. features a basement level with mechanicals store rooms and laundry first & second floor plans for 3 bedroom apartments and even the built in cabinetry. The second project displays floor plans and elevation for a 1 bedroom bungalow on 7955 Blackstone Ave. which still exists. Herlin 1889-1954 and Repp 1887-1965 were both students and instructors for the Chicago Technical College. Herlin went onto become a salesman and exec in companies in Iowa Texas and other states. Repp worked for the W.W. Ahlsch Co. in Chicago and then the Fall Brick Co. as draftsman and architect. Hocke b. 1887 graduated from the Chicato Technical College in 1913 and became a Chicago Architect for the next 3 decades. The Chicago Technical College was first located at the Lake View Building at 116 S. Michigan Ave. and then 2721 So. Michigan Ave. around World War I before finally moving to the corner of 26th & Indiana after 1928. Their courses were offered to both men and women flexible schedules and included short three-month builder’s courses in drafting and design. No copies located in Worldcat. First edition of this fantastic salesman photo album of the buildings fitted with the latest elevator entrances and elevator cars produced by the Tyler Company. These buildings hospitals exhibition halls skyscrapers reflect the tremendous explosion of building and Art Deco design during the Roaring 20s. The photographs include automobiles pedestrians large neon advertising signs street scenes next to the buildings and more. Included are such historic structures as the Bedell Store Building designed by Schonewald & Doyle and built in 1925 now known as the Cascade Building; the Moorish-inspired Bankers Bond Building now Massey Building historic Art Deco 10-story office building designed by W.L. Welton and constructed in 1925; two views of the luxurious Book-Cadillac Hotel Book Tower in Detroit MI designed by Louis Kamper and completed in 1924; the Neo-Gothic style Buhl Building Skyscraper in Detroit MI designed by Wirt Rowland and completed in 1925; the historic Bullocks Department Store at 7th & Broadway in downtown Los Angeles CA considered at the time one of the busiest intersections in the country; the Chanin Building skyscraper designed by Sloan & Robertson in the Art Deco style with assistance of Jacques Delamarre and constructed from 1927-1929; a picture of the fantastic neon sign for Conoco Oil products above the Continental Oil Building designed by William Bowman and built in 1927 in Denver CO; the stunning Art Deco Farnsworth Building co-designed by William Van Powell and constructed from 1927-1929 in Memphis TN; the historic Hudson’s Department Store in Detroit which consisted of over 2 million square feet with the Tyler Co. supplying 51 passenger elevators 17 freight elevators 8 employee elevators and 48 escalators; the Peninsular Telephone Building designed by J.H. Johnson and built in 1925; the beautiful Art Deco Los Angeles Library Goodhue building constructed in 1926 and designed by Bertram Grosvenor Goodhue; the beautiful Stewart & Co. Art Deco Building in New York showing tour buses and cars running down the street and many others. Tyler Elevator Products was founded in 1872 by Washington S. Tyler 1835-1917 as the Cleveland Wire Works. They produced quality wire screens screen machinery elevator entrances elevator cars wire cloth trellises and more. They quickly expanded and by 1913 had moved into a four-story building at 3615 Superior Ave. with electric lights steam heat and cement floors. They would by the 1920s employ nearly 1100 workers in their Cleveland factories with company branches across the US. Tyler Elevator Products is currently located in Twinsburg OH. W.S. Untitled manuscript in Italian on paper in brown ink with illustrations in ink and was over pencil underdrawings.
Italy: 1693. Quarto:. Bound in contemporary vellum soiled and with restored losses to the corners. The manuscript itself is in excellent condition with just a few defective leaves f. 6 with loss of text pp. 225-40 with outer margin and lower outer corner irregularly snipped away minimally affecting the edges of a few drawings. A fine unpublished architectural manuscript with sections on mathematics perspective ballistics. Several prominent buildings are described and illustrated including Rome’s Saint Peter’s Basilica the Palazzo dei Conservatori and Palazzo dei Senatori on the Campidoglio Sant’Agnese and the Villa Pamphili. The text is profusely illustrated with very precise architectural drawings in ink and wash. The author draws from the central authorities of Renaissance and Baroque architecture: Serlio Vignola Scamozzi Andrea del Pozzo and some of his drawings are closely related to or derive from those authors’ published works as well as the vedute of Falda. The architectural treatise is followed in a different but apparently contemporary hand by a treatise on harmonic proportions. p. 245-268. Contents: Comparative table of different units of measure used in various parts of Italy as well as England France etc. unsigned 1st leaf recto. Lessons in geometry including the use of the compass increasing in complexity from two-dimensional to three-dimensional figures. unsigned 1st leaf verso -p. 8 Proportions of the five orders beginning on p. 9 Proportions of ornamenti: column bases pedestals entablatures cornices friezes architraves etc. The illustrations include a capital by Michelangelo used on the Campidoglio p.22.
