‎, Brepols, 2026 Hardback, Pages: xxviii + 974, Size:230 x 280 mm, Illustrations:96 b/w, 969 col., 14 tables b/w., Language: English. ISBN 9782503624945.‎

‎Summary Tablature is a generic term for music written as a table or a score, most often using letters or numbers instead of conventional music notation. It was mainly used for solo instruments such as keyboards, lutes and guitars and was a mainstream notation until the mid-eighteenth century. Tablatures were also used for many single-line instruments-strings, winds, and brass-as well as the human voice. Composers and choir masters were among the other musically bilingual musicians who used tablature in their professional lives. Tablature was the most natural way to write music in score until conventional notation was gradually adapted for score writing during the seventeenth century. Tens of thousands of tablature works survive from the early modern period until c.1750. Often dismissed as eccentric and impenetrable, tablature has frequently been seen as an obstacle, and often overlooked in music history studies. One of the principal aims of this book is to break down the barriers that have hindered the general assimilation of tablature repertories into the way we understand music of the past. Chosen from among thousands of surviving sources, this book presents a representative group of 435 tablatures selected by a team of leading international scholars to show the beauty, diversity, and practicality of the notation. For each chosen work, a facsimile shows the original notation and is accompanied by a modern transcription and commentary to demystify music that has too frequently been regarded as obscure or enigmatic. ‎Sedition. The Spread of Controversial Literature and Ideas in France and Scotland, c. 1550-1610‎

‎, Brepols, 2021 Hardback, 324 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Illustrations:6 b/w, 1 col., Language(s):English, French. ISBN 9782503589909.‎

‎Summary This interdisciplinary collection examines the notion of sedition in the period of the French Wars of Religion (1560-1600) and focuses not only on France itself, but also on Scotland during the reign of the French-born Mary Queen of Scots. Composed of eleven chapters written by an international team of experts, this volume concentrates on the political aspects of sedition rather than religious heresy, and covers writings and publications in a wide range of fields: politics, history, law, literature, and gender. A complementary feature of this collection is the spectrum of writings studied; they include edicts and treatises, pamphlets, broadsides, legal documents, dialogues, and satirical prose and poetry. Several chapters also address visual representations of sedition. An Introduction and a Conclusion provide synthetic analyses of the material studied in the individual chapters. This is a collection which will appeal to readers with interests in the history of political ideas and thought, the comparative study of monarchical government, and concepts of tyranny and resistance, discord, rebellion, and revolt. ‎John of Garland, Martin Hall (ed)‎

‎John of Garland's De triumphis Ecclesie. A new critical edition with introduction and translation‎

‎, Brepols, 2020 Hardback, 417 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Illustrations:10 col., Languages: English, Latin. ISBN 9782503585116.‎

‎Summary This is the first translation in any language of John of Garland's poem about the historical events of his lifetime (c. 1195- c. 1258), together with revised Latin text, introduction and notes. This work gives a vivid picture of Anglo-French relations, of studies in Toulouse after the Albigensian Crusade, and of the need for faith following Louis' catastrophic defeat in the Seventh Crusade. John gives us insights into his own life, and a stream of stories, holy and profane. The translation and notes bring to life for a wide range of medievalists this eye-witness account by an Englishman in France of major events of the age, especially 1242-52. They make clear John's debts to classical authors and to contemporaries, especially Alan of Lille and Matthew Paris. Through re-ordering the lines, this edition now generates clarity from the single manuscript. It also offers fresh insights and a new perspective on John of Garland himself. TABLE OF CONTENTS Introduction Chapter 1. Life and Works of John of Garland Chapter 2. The Manuscript Tradition and Previous Scholarship Chapter 3. De triumphis Ecclesie Chapter 4. Literary Influences and Sources Chapter 5. John's Teaching and Preaching Chapter 6. 'Arma crucemque cano': Church and Crusade Chapter 7. The Main Political Sub-Plots Chapter 8. ‎, Brepols, 2024 Paperback, 536 pages, Size:152 x 229 mm, Language: English. ISBN 9780888443137.‎

‎Summary The Medieval Clergy gives voice to the so-called secular clergy in the Central Middle Ages - a group that included priests, bishops, deacons, and canons, whose primary responsibilities included ministering to laypeople. These clerics administered the sacraments, and their churches sheltered the poor, housed the relics of the saints, and offered places of protection and community. The documents collected here, most appearing for the first time in English, allow readers to explore the richness of the lives of these clergy: the ideals they strove to emulate, the complexity of their lived experiences, and the multifaceted roles they played - pastoral, sacramental, familial, social, educational, liturgical, memorial, military, economic, legal, and civic.
