‎In 1999, a short video of a solitary boy kicking an empty bottle up a hill in Mexico City became the first instalment of Children?s Games, a series of works by artist Francis Al s (b. Antwerp, 1959). The ongoing project, which now numbers around thirty-five works, has gradually given shape to an extensive collection of videos of children at play. For almost twenty-five years, Al s and his collaborators F lix Blume, Julien Devaux, and Rafael Ortega have been travelling around the world to document the distinctive ways in which children interact with each other and their physical environment. They have gone from remote villages in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Afghanistan, Venezuela, and Nepal to the mountains of Switzerland and metropoles like Hong Kong and Paris, but have also visited the war-torn city of Mosul in Iraq, the border between Mexico and the United States, and the strait of Gibraltar that divides Africa and Europe. The resulting images are standing proof of the seriousness of play and of children?s stunning powers of resilience in the face of conflict. This volume provides a multidisciplinary perspective to the many layers of Children?s Games. It includes an interview with Francis Al s and Rafael Ortega, a series of essays by well-known scholars and art critics, curatorial statements, and a logbook related to the presentation of Children?s Games at the Venice Biennale of 2022. ‎Summary CC CM, 172A contains the editio princeps of two Latin translations made by the late medieval Dutch Church reformer Geert Grote (Gerardus Magnus, 1340-1384) and a revised edition of another translation, made by Anthonius Henrici de Viersen (fl. 1460-1490), Brother of the Common Life in Butzbach and collaborator of the proto-humanist Gabriel Biel. The source texts had originally been composed in Middle Dutch, by the great Brabantine mystic Jan van Ruusbroec (1293-1381) and by Godfried Wevel, one of his fellow canons regular at Groenendaal near Brussels from 1360 until his death in 1396. Another editio princeps completes the volume: a Middle Dutch adaptation of Meister Eckhart's Reden der Unterweisung, the main source for Wevel's Vanden twaelf dogheden. This adaptation was probably compiled in Grote's entourage, if not by him personally, and is here edited as Eyn boeck van der gelatenheit. The publication of Grote's adaptation of Eckhart and the accompanying convincingly underpinned analysis may mean a landslide for the proper assessment of Eckhart's reception in the Low Countries and adjacent territories in modern western Germany during the later Middle Ages. Each of the edited texts is accompanied by an apparatus comparatiuus, indicating in detail all discrepancies between the translations and the source texts. Lengthy introductions complete the volume.‎

Es stellt ein neues Konzept zur Analyse vormoderner Karte vor und setzt es am Beispiel der sogenannten 'Genuesischen Weltkarte' von 1457 um, einer anonymen, dem nordmediterranen Raum entstammenden Karte, von der weder der genaue Erstellungsort noch der unmittelbare Nutzungskontext bekannt sind. Im ausgehenden Mittelalter besch ftigten sich verschiedenartige Kreise intensiv mit geographischen und kartographischen Fragen. Zus tzlich zu den Zeugnissen gelehrter M nche und Kleriker wird nun das Interesse von weltlichen Gelehrten, F rsten, Notaren, H ndlern, Seefahrern und humanistischen Zirkeln an Karten greifbarer. Angeregt wurde dieses Interesse durch das Anwachsen des Wissens ber die Welt. Lateineurop ische Reisende und Gesandte aus fernen L ndern berichteten ber ihre Erfahrungen aus Asien und Afrika. Fr he Humanisten fanden Handschriften fast vergessener antiker Werke wieder, so dass sich der Blick auf das Autorit tenwissen nderte. Insbesondere die sp testens 1409 fertiggestellte lateinische bersetzung der ?Geographia' des Alexandriner Astronomen Klaudios Ptolemaios machte Furore und wird in der Forschung als Ansto einschneidender Ver nderungen der Kartographie gesehen. Der Abgleich der 'Genuesischen Weltkarte' mit Karten aus ber 130 Archivsignaturen zeigt, dass sie sich in mehrfacher Hinsicht von den blichen Karten des 14./15. Jahrhunderts der nordmediterranen Region abhebt. Ihre Kartenmacher waren keine konventionellen Ersteller von K stenlinienkarten oder Serienkarten. Vielmehr waren sie humanistisch interessiert, mathematisch gebildet und entstammten wahrscheinlich dem Umfeld der Kurie und des Konzils von Ferrara-Florenz (1438-1445).
