First edition thus of these final blueprint plans prepared for Gordon’s Fireplace Shop when it first constructed it’s brick-faced retail space in the noted Lloyd Center Mall in East Portland. When the Mall first opened it was the largest outdoor retail mall in the world and Gordon’s would prove to be a very popular tenant. The blueprints show the brick facades the arched windows and faux gas lamps which graced the front. Also shown are the display areas display window elevations mechanical plans the lighting plan and power. Hollis Johnston 1894-1967 was a noted Portland architect who designed Pacific Northwest International Modernism buildings such as the Oregon National Guard Armory Lincoln High School Portland Bridlemile School Portland the General Motors Truck and Coach Division building in Seattle the Warm Springs Indian Reservation Kah-nee-ta resort and many others. New York etc: George A. Fuller Company 1937. 322pp. Small quarto. Cloth and boards t.e.g. others rough-trimmed. Heavily illustrated with gravure photographs. Some hand smudges to spine two letters in envelopes tipped to endsheets pencil inscription on prelim a few minor marks to boards; a very good or better copy in edgeworn slipcase. First edition of this testament to the firm's decades of involvement in the construction of some of the best known buildings and monuments of their generation. One of 1000 numbered copies printed for "gratuitous" distribution signed by the President Lou R. Crandall with the recipient's name inserted. The original recipient was J. F. Manning general manager of marble quarrying for the firm and two t.ls.s. from Crandall to him are enclosed in envelopes tipped to the endsheets accompanied by a carbon of one response written on Manning's behalf due to his illness. The first letter 3 May 1938 forwards the book noting the number of the projects illustrated that were favored by the recipient's involvement including the Supreme Court Building and the Lincoln Memorial. The second letter 11 May 1938 treats at some length the dismal situation of the construction business due to the Depression. George A. Fuller Company hardcover
