‎ELGIN MARBLES‎

‎Minor shelfwear. ; The Parthenon sculptures collected by Lord Elgin nearly 200 years ago rank amongst the highest achievements of mankind. Since they went on display in the British Museum in 1817, artists, scholars, poets and millions of visitors have stood before them in wonder. This book tells their story, beginning in the fifth century BC when the Parthenon was built in Athens. The author explains what the sculptures represent, who made them and how they fitted into the grand design of the temple. He describes their gradual destruction by religious zealots, beseiging Venetians and other vandals before Lord Elgin brought them to the safety of London. ; Introductory Guides; 8.5 X 8.4 X 0.3 inches; 72 pages‎

‎THE CAMBRIDGE ANCIENT HISTORY Volume of Plates II Prepared by C. T. Seltman‎

‎Ex-library copy (non-circulating reference) with usual stamps, call numbers. Else VG. ; Cambridge Ancient History Series; 121 pages; This book of plates can be used either as a companion to Volume IV or as an independent, illustrated account of the period, and of the evidence of Greek civilization and culture as it encountered the Persian empire and struggled for its freedom. Detailed commentary accompanies a full pictoral survey of the art and archaeology of the Persian empire and its provinces, from Thrace to India. The section on Greece concentrates on late Archaic Athens, immediately before the Persian wars, and considers cultural progress as evidence of various aspects of Greek life and society. The fortunes of the Western Greek colonial area and of the Etruscan and Italic peoples are similarly treated. The volume concludes with a study of the invention of coinage and its use throughout Greece and Persia.‎

‎THE SANCTUARY OF HEMITHEA AT KASTABOS‎

‎DJ is price-clipped. Dustjacket has minor shelfwear and rubbing. ; 23pp of photos, 78 figures. "This is an account of the excavation of a Greek sanctuary in the south-west corner of the mainland of Asia Minor opposite Rhodes--once known as the Carian Chersonese. The excavations took place in 1959-1960. This is the first Greek temple of any size uncovered in that part of Asia Minor, and the discovery of the site of Kastabos, whose existence was known from book V of Diodorus' world history, has entailed the re-siting of several ancient towns in the region. The sanctuary itself, whose main buildings date from c. 300 B. C. , was dedicated to the Goddess Hemithea. It adds to our knowledge of a special sort of Greek shrine which was popular in the early Hellenistic age and is a perfect instance of a religious gathering place designed for a short, well attended festival. The excavations show that, although it was an Ionic temple, the style of the great contemporary temples in Ionia (such as that at Ephesus) has been modified and the design is somewhat similar, in plan and proportion, to that of the temple of Epidaurus. In particular, the discovery of a decorative screen with little shrines round the temple area throws new light on Greek architectural complexes." ; 180 pages‎

‎GREEK PAINTED POTTERY‎

‎Very Light edgwear. Light creasing to bottom front corner of wraps. ; 408 pages; Greek Painted Pottery has been used by classics and classical archaeology students for some thirty years. It thoroughly examines all painted pottery styles from the Protogeometric to the Hellenistic period from all areas of Greece and from the colonies in parts of Italy. In each case it covers the development of iconography and the use of colour, decorative motifs and the distinctive styles of each stage. It examines the most utilitarian pottery objects as well as some of the finest pieces produced by a flourishing civilisation. Other chapters cover the pottery industry and pottery-making techniques, including firing, the types of local clay which were used and inscription. This study also considers how one can date pottery and establish a chronology and the various methods by which these artefacts have been classified, preserved and collected. This is the third edition of this classic text, which has been extensively revised and includes a fully updated bibliography. This edition also includes coverage of new evidence and new theories which have surfaced since the book was last revised in 1972. With over 100 black and white photographs and plentiful line drawings, the new edition of this comprehensive text will be invaluable to students studying classical art, archaeology and art history.‎

‎EAST GREEK POTTERY‎

‎East Greek Pottery provides the only dedicated study of the pottery created by the Greek settlers along the western coast of Turkey between 1100 and 500 BC. The authors examine in detail significant developments in shape, material and decoration from the emergence of the protogeometric style in the eleventh century to the fifth century BC, when competition from Athenian imports forced craftsmen to use only very simple ornamentation. The twenty-three chapters offer a comprehensive style-by-style analysis of both familiar and lesser-known pottery types, including Grey ware, relief ware and archaic trade amphorae. ; Routledge Readings In Classical Archaeology; 9.2 X 6.1 X 0.6 inches; 256 pages‎

‎Book shows very light shelf wear on covers only, text/ interior is very clean and no marked in any way. Architectural drawings, a great many color photos, 191 pages. From the introduction: "The affiliation between these two cities presumed by this book is hardly definitive, but offered up as simultaneously autobiographical and institutional. Our ambitions forTokyo from Vancouver have been simple: to document the academic culture of a foreign study program, UBC SoATokyo; conducted in the winter of 2004 by the School of Architecture from the University of British Columbia. Fifteen graduate students and three faculty members, joined by two local architects, set up studio for four months in Mori Building 25 at Ark Hills in Roppongi. This book is our collective journal-a record of what we made and thought. More than that, it presents the work of the architects and theorists who generously shared their work and time with us."
