‎THE FIGHT AT DAME EUROPA'S SCHOOL: SHOWING HOW THE GERMAN BOY THRASHED THE FRENCH BOY, AND HOW THE ENGLISH BOY LOOKED ON.‎

‎pp. 34, (2) [Advertisements]. Soiled. Thin 12 mo. Original full cloth binding; worn at head of spine. Early manuscript ownerships of C. G. Van Gelden, Clarks Ferry, PA. Satirical commentary on the era of the Franco-Prussian War, with 33 characteristic Nast cartoon illustrations. It is an allegorical story of Europe and the major European powers represented as school boys: William [William I], the German boy with his sly friend Mark [Bismarck; Louis [Napoleon III], the French boy; and John [Bull or Russell], the English boy. Aleck was a monitor as was Joseph. Nicholas, a boy who had been in the school but who had made an unprovoked attack on a quiet but dirty boy (Constantine) subsequently left. This story is of how William tried to overrun much of Louis' garden claiming that it was in defense of his Fatherland while John stood by. Dame Europa punished them all. American laughed. ‎pp. VIII [Preface by Theophile Gautier], 122 lithograph plates, each containing four drawings. Foxed. Folio. Plain marbled boards binding. "Gavarni was the pseudonym of Sulpice Guillaume Chevalier. A great French caricaturist and lithographer, he was first known for his amusing drawings of costumes, which appeared in La Mode. Later he contributed satirical drawings to Charivari. In his early delineations of society he appeared more capricious than his great contemporary Daumier. However, Gavarni's last work, published mostly in L'Illustration, reflects a bitter attitude. His trip to London in 1847 resulted in drawings strongly condemning working-class conditions there. Gavarni produced over 8,000 drawings, watercolors, and lithographs." - Cambridge Encyclopedia. This collection "attests to the spontaneity and profundity of his observations. The great popular success of his caricature owed as much to the accompanying captions as to the richness of the drawing." Colta Feller Ives. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! FR3‎

‎Trollope, Mrs. Francis (1780-1863).‎

‎DOMESTIC MANNERS OF THE AMERICANS.‎

‎pp. 325 + Eight full page lithographed satirical plates by August Hervieu, who accompanied Mrs. Trollope on her American tour. Foxed. Worn contemporary full cloth binding. "Landing at New Orleans in late December, 1827, she went almost immediately up the river to Memphis and thence to Louisville and Cincinnati, reaching the latter place about February 10, 1828. At Memphis she tarried a few days and went to visit Francis Wright's near-by Nashoba Community, which oppressed her with its unfinished buildings and primitive surroundings. After leaving Cincinnati, the scene of her most violent tirades against the United States, she passed the summer of 1830 in Maryland. Here she observed slavery, especially among the small landed proprietors, and found the slaves not badly treated, although she believed the essence of the system to be bad" - Clark 112. She also visited Pennsylvania, Baltimore, Washington, and New York. "A minor classic of looking down one's nose" - Streeter 845. Her book became an instant best seller. Her attacks on the Americans assured that the book would be an object of great controversy, and would sell on both sides of the Atlantic. Nevins calls it "the most prejudiced and hotly discussed of all British books of travel in the United States." Sabin 97028; Howes T35; Robinson p. 197. FIRST U.S. EDITION. **PRICE JUST REDUCED!
