‎Cervantes the Golden Age and the Battle for Cultural Identity in 20th-Century Spain‎

‎Paperback / softback. New. Studies that connect the Spanish 17th and 20th centuries usually do so through a conservative lens assuming that the blunt imperialism of the early modern age endlessly glorified by Franco’s dictatorship was a constant in the Spanish imaginary. This book by contrast recuperates the thriving humanistic vision of the Golden Age celebrated by Spanish progressive thinkers writers and artists in the decades prior to 1939 and the Francoist Regime. The hybrid modern stance of the country in the 1920s and early 1930s would uniquely incorporate the literary and political legacies of the Spanish Renaissance into the ambitious design of a forward democratic future. In exploring the complex understanding of the multifaceted event that is modernity the life story and literary opus of Miguel de Cervantes 1547-1616 acquires a new significance given the weight of the author in the poetic and political endeavors of those Spanish left-wing reformists who believed they could shape a new Spanish society. By recovering their progressive dream buried for almost a century of incipient and full Spanish modernities Ana María G. Laguna establishes a more balanced understanding of both the modern and early modern periods and casts doubt on the idea of a persistent conservatism in Golden Age literature and studies. This book ultimately serves as a vigorous defense of the canonical as well as the neglected critical traditions that promoted Cervantes’s humanism in the 20th century. paperback‎

‎Claiming Space: Locations and Orientations in World Literatures‎

‎Paperback / softback. New. This open access book explores literary works and practices – always existing in the dynamic relation between locations and orientations – in a series of carefully designed case studies. Explicitly expressed or implied manifesting itself sometimes as dislocation and disorientation the claiming of space by any symbolic means necessary is revealed as a constant effect of literary endeavors. In dialogue with geopolitics of culture sociology and anthropology attention to literary locations and orientations brings spatial particularity into the study of world literatures. These case studies demonstrate that four key terms cosmopolitan vernacular location orientation can frame analyses of very different types of literary acts and texts in the contemporary period allowing for distinctions that are not captured within the grids of other conceptual pairs like centre-periphery local-global postcolonial-metropolitan North-South. With this framing expressive practices in a wide range of regions – including Europe Africa the Middle East and the Pacific – are analysed in ways that bring out how spatiality is at stake in the cosmopolitan-vernacular dynamic. The eBook editions of this book are available open access under a CC BY-NC-ND 3.0 licence on bloomsburycollections.com. paperback‎

‎Funny Dostoevsky: New Perspectives on the Dostoevskian Light Side‎

‎Paperback / softback. New.
Tapping into the emergence of scholarly comedy studies since the 2000s this collection brings new perspectives to bear on the Dostoevskian light side.

Funny Dostoevksy demonstrates how and why Dostoevsky is one of the most humorous 19th-century authors even as he plumbs the depths of the human psyche and the darkest facets of European modernity. The authors go beyond the more traditional categories of humor such as satire parody and the carnivalesque to apply unique lenses to their readings of Dostoevsky. These include cinematic slapstick and the body in Crime and Punishment the affective turn and hilarious and deadly impatience in Demons and ontological jokes in Notes from Underground and The Idiot.

The authors – coincidentally all women including some of the most established scholars in the field alongside up-and-comers – address gender and the marginalization of comedy culminating in a chapter on Dostoevsky's "funny and furious" women and explore the intersections of gender and humor in literary and culture studies.

Funny Dostoevksy applies some of the latest findings on humor and laughter to his writing while comparative chapters bring Dostoevsky's humor into conjunction with other popular works such as Chaplin’s Modern Times and Lin-Manuel Miranda's Hamilton. Written with a verve and wit that Dostoevsky would appreciate this boldly original volume illuminates how humor and comedy in his works operate as vehicles of deconstruction pleasure play and transcendence.
paperback‎

‎Jane Eyre in German Lands: The Import of Romance 1848–1918‎

‎Paperback / softback. New. Lynne Tatlock examines the transmission diffusion and literary survival of Jane Eyre in the German-speaking territories and the significance and effects thereof 1848-1918. Engaging with scholarship on the romance novel she presents an historical case study of the generative power and protean nature of Brontë’s new romance narrative in German translation adaptation and imitation as it involved multiple agents from writers and playwrights to readers publishers illustrators reviewers editors adaptors and translators. Jane Eyre in German Lands traces the ramifications in the paths of transfer that testify to widespread creative investment in romance as new ideas of women’s freedom and equality topped the horizon and sought a home especially in the middle classes. As Tatlock outlines the multiple German instantiations of Brontë’s novel—four translations three abridgments three adaptations for general readers nine adaptations for younger readers plays farces and particularly the fiction of the popular German writer E. Marlitt and its many adaptations—evince a struggle over its meaning and promise. Yet precisely this multiplicity repetition redundancy and proliferation combined with the romance narrative’s intrinsic appeal in the decades between the March Revolutions and women’s franchise enabled the cultural diffusion impact and long-term survival of Jane Eyre as German reading. Though its focus on the circulation of texts across linguistic boundaries and intertwined literary markets and reading cultures Jane Eyre in German Lands unsettles the national paradigm of literary history and makes a case for a fuller and inclusive account of the German literary field. paperback‎

‎Kazuo Ishiguro Against World Literature‎

‎Paperback / softback. New.
A study of how Kazuo Ishiguro’s novels respond to and represent the world through characters that are profoundly limited in their understanding of the systems that bind them.

How has a writer known principally for his contained domestic novels come to represent the most dynamic elements of world literature In Kazuo Ishiguro Against World Literature Chris Holmes expands our understanding of how world literature engages with the most pressing crises of the 20th and 21st centuries by examining Ishiguro’s fascination with characters who are profoundly constrained in their ability to understand global systems to which they are subject. Rather than following the established pattern of so-called global novels which crisscross the planet exhibiting a knowing cosmopolitanism Ishiguro’s fictional engagement with the world comes principally in the form of characters who are cut off from the global systems that abuse them.

By examining the ways in which Ishiguro foregrounds the in-process thinking of those who fail to comprehend their place in the flow of politics culture and ideas Holmes positions Ishiguro as the great chronicler of everyday lives and as such prepares a mode of reading world literature that questions the assumptions for how we live and think with others when each of us is deeply limited.
paperback‎

‎Literature and the Making of the World: Cosmopolitan Texts Vernacular Practices‎

‎Paperback / softback. New. This open access book positions itself at the intersection of world literature studies literary anthropology and philosophical critiques of ‘world’ and ‘globe’ concepts. Doing so it investigates how literature imagines and shapes worlds for its readers through linguistically specific cosmopolitan-vernacular dynamics both at the level of textual engagement and on a material level of textual production and circulation. Moving from textual analyses in Part One – ‘Worlds in Texts’ – to combined analyses of texts media and agents in the literary field in Part Two – ‘Texts in Worlds’ – the concerns of these nine chapters range from multilingualism genre and style to material forms such as the little magazine or the scrapbook archive and finally to activities such as travel as a writing profession and literary promotion. With this focus on practice – which geographically engages with Constantinople China Russia western Europe North America southern Africa and India – contributors demonstrate methodologically how world literature studies can bring the empirically specific detail to bear on global modes of analysis. It is precisely through such a dual optic that the world-making capacity of literature becomes apparent. The eBook editions of this book are available open access under a CC BY-NC-ND 3.0 licence on bloomsburycollections.com. paperback‎

‎New Directions in Print Culture Studies: Archives Materiality and Modern American Culture‎

‎Paperback / softback. New. New Directions in Print Culture Studies features new methods and approaches to cultural and literary history that draw on periodicals print culture and material culture thus revising and rewriting what we think we know about the aesthetic cultural and social history of transnational America. The unifying questions posed and answered in this book are methodological: How can we make material archival objects meaningful How can we engage and contest dominant conceptions of aesthetic historical and literary periods How can we present archival material in ways that make it accessible to other scholars and students What theoretical commitments does a focus on material objects entail New Directions in Print Culture Studies brings together leading scholars to address the methodological historical and theoretical commitments that emerge from studying how periodicals books images and ideas circulated from the 19th century to the present. Reaching beyond national boundaries the essays in this book focus on the different materials and archives we can use to rewrite literary history in ways that highlight not a canon of “major†literary works but instead the networks dialogues and tensions that define print cultures in various moments and movements. paperback‎

‎New Directions in Print Culture Studies: Archives Materiality and Modern American Culture‎

‎Hardback. New. New Directions in Print Culture Studies features new methods and approaches to cultural and literary history that draw on periodicals print culture and material culture thus revising and rewriting what we think we know about the aesthetic cultural and social history of transnational America. ‎Professor or Dr Robert A Paul‎

‎Our Two-Track Minds: Rehabilitating Freud on Culture‎

‎Hardback. New. While many of Freud’s original formulations have required either revision or rejection and replacement with newer models his cultural books such as Civilization and Its Discontents and Totem and Taboo though extremely influential in the early part of the 20th century have more recently been either neglected or else dismissed as long-outdated fantasies. Robert A. Paul shows that Freud's ideas in these books and his thinking on how human society is possible given the unpromising materials out of which it is constructed i.e. human beings can appear in a different and more favorable light when viewed through the lens of contemporary anthropology cultural studies and evolutionary theory. hardcover‎

‎Pacific Literatures as World Literature‎

‎Paperback / softback. New. Pacific Literatures as World Literature is a conjuration of trans-Pacific poets and writers whose work enacts forces of “becoming oceanic†and suggests a different mode of understanding viewing and belonging to the world. The Pacific past and present remains uneasily amenable to territorial demarcations of national or marine sovereignty. At the same time as a planetary element necessary to sustaining life and well-being the Pacific could become the means to envisioning ecological solidarity if compellingly framed in terms that elicit consent and inspire an imagination of co-belonging and care. The Pacific can signify a bioregional site of coalitional promise as much as a danger zone of antagonistic peril. With ground-breaking writings from authors based in North America Japan Taiwan Korea Hawaii and Guam and new modes of research – including multispecies ethnography and practice ecopoetics and indigenous cosmopolitics – authors explore the socio-political significance of the Pacific and contribute to the development of a collective effort of comparative Pacific studies covering a refreshingly broad ethnographically grounded range of research themes. This volume aims to decenter continental/land poetics as such via long-standing transnational Pacific ties re-worlding Pacific literature as world literature. paperback‎
