‎FASHION MEN'S SUITS.‎

‎Adler Buy Collegian clothes here Counter or window display advertisement for men’s suits with young model in Jazz Age cut suit and arts & crafts pastoral scene in the background with decorative border.‎

‎Milwaukee WI: Adler Compay ca. 1920. Large image mounted on thick card stock 14 x 22 in. Colour lithograph decorative arts & crafts border nice colours varnished some minor edgewear lettering at borders slightly cropped in order for counter display to be cut to standard size very minor soiling lower fore-edge some yellowing from varnish still VG examplar. A vivid and scarce counter advertising display for Adler Company Collegian men’s suits line. The Collegian line was for college men and any man who cared about perfect style with points of refinement. Although their advertising was not specifically collegiate their advertising campaigns often employed illustrations that conjured idealized college associations implying that if one were to buy their ready-to-wear suits then they too would be successful in college business and the appropriate middle class lifestyle. This advertisement offers a beautiful example of Jazz Age advertising. The Adler Company was founded in 1848 by Solomon Adler in Milwaukee Wisconsin and grew and thrived through the Civil War the Victorian era and eventually would employ over 900 people with nationwide sales in the 1920s over one and one-half million dollars. During the Jazz Age the Adler Company was synonymous with their Collegian line. The company was liquidated after the crash in 1929. First edition of this unusually scarce counter display catalogue of Butterick fashion patterns all-day long dresses tailored dresses jacket dresses evening gowns maternity wear housecoats dressing coats and more for pre-World War II America. This catalogue provides an invaluable illustrated historical reference for the colours styles and fabrics during the explosion and impact of Christian Dior’s new designs reflecting the refined femininity with severely cinched waists extra padding to the hips longer and decidedly more romantic skirts and dresses as well as nicely fitted jacket-and-skirt tailored suits. The 1930s featured more modest and form fitted glamorous styles focusing on natural high waist fitted hips and longer skirts with high necklines and wide shoulders. Modeled on the styles popularized by such glamour queens as Greta Garbo Joan Crawford and Ginger Rogers the ideal “30s woman†was supposed to be tall slender with tiny waist and narrow hips. These designs show the marked rise in special elegance of 1938 fashions emphasizing the pencil-thin silhouette skunk jacket extravagant hats with veils molded dresses full skirts with bright patterns and tiny sailor hats. These catalogues are quite scarce and nearly all have perished over the decades from use not only from the original women’s stores fabric stores tailors seamstresses but also as reference works for costume departments designers and others in the ensuing decades. ‎Chicago New York & Montreal: International Tailoring Co. 1926. Thick elephant folio 19 x 19.5 x 2.75 in. 57 1 pp. printed on thick card stock each mounted on linen hinge. With colour lithograph fashion plates illustrating ITC styles of the period verso of almost all pages with 331 mounted textile samples in wool wool-silk blends -- all samples clearly marked with prices and availability numerous text illustrations decorative borders. Original three-quarter black pebbled cloth over green Art Deco style lettering on front cover slight rubbing very minor shelfwear very minor tidemark to lower fore-edge of a couple leaves still a NF copy. First edition of this scarce and unusually complete salesman sample catalogue for men’s suits work clothes and evening wear during the Jazz Age. The company known as the “King of Tailors†together with its’ famed subsidiary J.L. Taylor maintained a huge tailoring operation in both Chicago New York and Montreal until after World War II employing hundreds of tailors and seamstresses to fill orders. The catalogues were very expensive to produce and so were most often found in department stores mercantiles and men’s stores which would have these catalogues on the sales floor for two years or more. Sales people were directed to simply clip the corners of samples for out-of-stock and discontinued fabrics but they often chose to remove the entire sample in order to not distract potential customers. The catalogue offers invaluable illustrated historical reference for the colours styles and fabrics during the era of F. Scott Fitzgerald and the Flappers. Most of the colour fashion plates illustrating the available sports suits styles Alconquin Arcady Belleterre The Cherokee Comet Cosmopolitan etc. have elegant backgrounds as well as indicating necessary belts hat styles and linings. In addition there is a plate for evening formal dress such as Prince Albert Tuxedos and of course the appropriate silk linings. The factory buildings in Chicago and New York are still standing and in use with the Chicago building designed by Mundie & Jensen finishing construction with additions in 1922 it exemplified the modern spacious natural light and progress work space of the time now used by the Chicago Art Institute and as condos while the New York edifice was designed by Starrett & Van Vleck and converted to Co-ops in 1980.
