Il Parco Nazionale dell'Alta Murgia, pur prevalentemente carsico e secco, ospita un cospicuo numero di stagni con le loro tipiche comunità biologiche, contribuendo a caratterizzare aree umide dalla elevata biodiversità e che raggiunge le sue massime espressioni con l'habitat prioritario definito dalla Comunità Europea (Direttiva 92/43/CEE) con il nome di "Stagni temporanei mediterranei" molto ben rappresentato nel Parco. Lo scopo del volume è di sensibilizzare e porre l'attenzione sulla importanza della conservazione di questi piccoli habitat acquatici e di tutta la loro comunità biologica in un territorio così apparentemente aspro e arido ma tipicamente mediterraneo e di grande valore biogeografico.
