Dr. Richard Rock on the left and Dr. Jean Misaubin on the right argue over their medical methods which appear to be a choice of bleeding Rock and cupping Misaubin. A woman possibly Moll's bawd and possibly the landlady rifles Moll's possessions for what she wishes to take away while Moll's maid tries to stop the looting and arguing. Hudibras.
London: The Whole Works of William Hogarth 1806. Hogarth's 12 prints illustrating Samuel Butler's poem Hudibras were among his favourite works. The work is a satirical polemic upon Roundheads Puritans Presbyterians and many of the other factions involved in the English Civil War. The work was written in three parts in 1663 1664 and 1678 although an unauthorised edition came out in 1662. Although a little more obscure than some of his works they represent an important stage in his development; Butler's comic narrative was the perfect subject for Hogarth to develop his gift for social satire. Twelve prints are on seven sheets - two prints on each sheet except for plates eleven and twelve which each have their own sheet. Copper engraving. Uncoloured. Size: 36 x 54 cm 14 x 21½ inches. Very good condition generally. Sheets 3 & 4 containing plates 5 to 8 are trimmed along the lower edge shaving the lowest line of the text. Sheets 3 4 and 6 are lightly damp-stained. unknown

Few mariginal tearsIllustration to the the 17th Century work ofSamuel Butler who was influenced by Rabelais and Cervantes' Don Quixote. While in Cervantes the noble knight although being mocked is supposed to draw readers' sympathies Hudibras is offered nothing but derision.The title comes from the name of a knight in Edmund Spenser's Faerie Queene who is described as "not so good of deeds as great of name" and "more huge in strength than wise in work". Spenser in turn probably got the name from the legendary king of the Britons Rud Hud Hudibras.Made by T. Cook after W. Hogarth. Thomas Cook 1744-1818 was a London engraver. Thomas was a student of Ravenet the well-known French engraver who resided in London at the time. He has copied the entire engraved work of Hogarth which was published under the name 'Hogarth Restored' from 1806. This progress Hogarth's last is based on the disorderly riotous Oxfordshire election of 1754 in which the Duke of Marlborough a Whig "the New Interest" challenged the entrenched Tories "the Old Interest" in the established stronghold of the latter party. Aimed at the upper middle and upper classes this series shows the cynicism of the aristocratic class toward electoral politics and delineates their attempted manipulation of the populace. It depicts politicians of both parties using slogans flattery bribery alcohol food and trinkets to expoit the population in the interests of their own undemocratic ambitions. It exposes both parties as exciting the most degrading proclivities of the least able sections of the electorate the poor the simpleminded the maimed the dying to produce a violence and an anarchy that ultimately envelops all and threatens the very ambitions they sought to satisfy. Essa venne composta da Henry Fielding per la sua commedia teatrale The Grub-Street Opera, che venne rappresentata per la prima volta nel 1731. La popolarità che godette fin dall'inizio la canzone è provata dal dipinto del 1748 di William Hogarth: O the Roast Beef of Old England (The Gate of Calais). Hogarth realizzò prima l'incisione del dipinto, la differenza tra le due trasposizioni è evidenziata dall'aggiunta di un corvo nel dipinto, inserito a causa di una macchia di colore caduta accidentalmente. Notevole è la contrapposizione tra il frate grasso che tocca libidinosamente la grande costata bovina e le figure dei soldati malati e denutriti. Hogarth fu valente pittore, ed il più importante incisore inglese di stampe satiriche. "Ho voluto comporre pitture su tela simili a rappresentazioni sulle scene; e spero che vengano giudicate con lo stesso criterio; ho cercato di trattare il mio soggetto come autore drammatico; il mio quadro è il mio palco-scenico, e attori sono uomini e donne che per mezzo di atti e gesti rappresentano una recita".
