First published in 1783 Farley's work was a popular and continuing success reaching its twelfth edition in 1811. Principal Cook at the London Tavern Farley claims that his work 'unlike so many which are without method or order is marked by perspicuity and regularity'. However Cagle reveals that Fiona Lucraft provides a detailed account of the author's plagiarism from Raffald and Glasse. Farley's name appears below the portrait from the ninth edition onwards. ‎Ward Lock c.1923. 8vo. with coloured frontispiece 11 coloured plates and 48 plates in monochrome fore-edges very lightly dust-soiled; original decorative brown cloth upper board and backstrip blocked in blind and lettered in black a remarkably well-preserved copy in unclipped dustwrapper the latter chafed not affecting lettering at head of backstrip. With advertisement front endpapers in sepia and 11pp of similar advertisements at end. 'All About Cookery' first issued under this title in 1871 is a derivative of Isabella Beeton's final work 'The Dictionary of Cookery'. The 'Dictionary' was first published in 1865 and designed to full the gap between her classic but highly-priced 'Book of Household Management' and the cheaper 'Cookery'. A key feature of the work is the arrangement of its subject matter - recipes menus implements and so on - in alphabetical order for easy reference. It is her only work so presented and to our belief the first compilation of its kind. The Edwardian and Georgian editions are particularly comprehensive in their scope and coverage. With advertisement endpapers and 16pp of advertisements bound in at end. As usual with this edition and unlike title and text the covers are lettered 'Every-Day' with the hyphen. Isabella Beeton's final work the 'Dictionary of Every-Day Cookery' was compiled to fill the gap between 'the seven-and-sixpenny 'Household Management' and the Shilling Cookery Book' Preface; first published in 1865 it is second in importance only to her famous flagship. Following Isabella's death in the same year her husband's publishing house of S.O. Beeton was acquired by Ward Lock & Tyler subsequently Ward Lock who naturally set about reissuing the lucrative stable of 'Beeton' cookery titles. The 'Dictionary' was first retitled 'Beeton's Every-Day Cookery and Housekeeping Book' and subsequently 'Mrs. Beeton's Everyday Cookery' as here.
