Profusely illustrated throughout with b&w drawings ranging from full page to vignette. The author/illustrator was born in Choteau Montana and in his early years worked for Buffalo Bill Cody. His art was influenced by meeting Charles M. Russell around 1900 and he went on to become a collected artist of the American West. At the top of the half title page of this volume he has inscribed: "To H.R. Cannon underscored / Dont mind the ups and downs / of life - a good man is never / down - long. / Dan Muller" and has used the bottom half to sketch first in pencil then ink a scene of a bucking bronco with his rider sitting on the ground with his hat beside him. This sketch is also signed "DAN MULLER" with a slanting dash above and below. A story of horses cowboys range wars rodeos and romance. This book contains the first two parts of 'The Ring of the Niblung' i.e.: 'The Rhinegold: Prelude' and 'The Valkyrie: First Day of the Trilogy'. This English translation of Richard Wagner's epic opera is enhanced by Arthur Rackham's beautiful detailed illustrations which bring to life the gods goddesses giants dwarves and other inhabitants of the drama. The plates are all clean and bright although one has four tiny flecks of skim from the facing tissue at the top probably as a result of the tipping-in process one has a very small crease at the bottom left-hand corner and another has a very tiny piece of edge wear. The card stock has darkened as seems common with this production affecting the adjacent pages see photograph. Some pages have light wrinkling no creases - mainly at corners. Moderate browning to edges of text block. Wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Two margin tears not affecting text or illustrations have been repaired with archival tape. Dust jacket has very small chips at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds browning and some very light scuffs on spine some light browning on panels three water stains on spine - the largest and darkest at the bottom light edge wear/wrinkling small light stain on rear panel. As President of the Art Workers' Guild Exhibition Society he was a more strenuous advocate of the Arts and Crafts movement than his friend William Morris and traveled abroad with his work specifically helping the formation of an American Arts and Crafts movement. Crane's early paintings embody the romantic medievalism of Rossetti and Burne-Jones but he soon used poetry and painting as a means to express his growing interest in new philosophical ideas. Ultimately he was converted to socialism - a cause he embraced wholeheartedly becoming a member of the Social Democratic Federation the Fabians and Morris's Socialist League. He gladly made his art servant to his beliefs producing political cartoons and trade union banners. This is the first major study of Crane's life and work to be published since his death in 1915. Isobel Spencer a past lecturer in the history of art at Glasgow College of Art includes in her scholarly study of the man and his work the full range of Crane's many artistic activities."
