Leipzig.: Gilbers'sche Verlagsbuchhandlung Eugen Twietmeyer. No date. Ca. 1907. Complete with 52 color lithographic plates loose in decorative paper-covered board portfolio 15 3/4 x 10 1/2 inches. An extremely scarce title; however compromised by fire damage to covers and the extremities of a number of plates although not impacting the images themselves. Plates IV VI XXX and XXXII are the most severely affected see images; on the other extreme many plates are scarcely affected. Most damage could be termed singeing to a page border. Short repaired tears to lower corner of two plates. The images themselves are clean and there is no odor. A portfolio of beautifully executed Jugendstil or Art Nouveau patterns for wall decor by Paul Grohmann the colors exceptionally rich and the designs striking. Many of the panels hint at the Deco stylistics emerging in upcoming decades. FIRST COLOURED ENGLISH EDITION 1898 Preface states "New edition in colours" 4to 300 x 235 mm 11¾ x 9 inches cloth backed boards with large coloured illustration to upper cover specially commissioned from Toulouse Lautrec by the original French publishers indoor scene 2 women 1 playing with this book large dog man entering room cat and cockatoo. 23 full page coloured illustrations attributed on title page to F.J. Vernay Yorick etc. printed 1 side only. Most illustrations are very interesting: Water Mill Serpentine Dancer Harlequin Traction Engine Mortar Mill Steamboat Volcano Scissors Grinder Life Boat Cat and Cherub little black boy crying in bath-tub watched by cat House on Fire etc. 3 are geometric. The book was supplied with a 'transparency' rectangular sheet of clear plastic printed with horizontal lines mounted in a card frame housed in pocket inside front cover which when moved as indicated over the pictures produced an illusion of movement. Expertly rebacked in red cloth matching original corners slightly worn showing cardboard at tips covers slightly dusty-looking a few small stains and marks to lower cover a few tiny scrapes to upper cover next to spine endpapers lightly browned tiny pale stain to upper inner edge of first few pages otherwise contents clean. A very good copy with original transparency but lacking its cardboard frame. This is an expanded edition of the uncoloured version published the same year without the Toulouse Lautrec cover and with only 13 illustrations. MORE IMAGES ATTACHED TO THIS LISTING ALL ZOOMABLE.
