Archive of 36 press photographs taken on the set of the 1959 film mounted to four printed card stock proof sheets from "Telerama" magazine with each sheet containing holograph ink annotations with the name of the production credits for Renoir and photographer R. Saguet and with three dated January 26 1959 and one dated April 4 1959. Accompanying the photographs are 35 negatives for photographs in the archive and 1 negative for a photograph that was not struck and mounted. <br/><br/>All the photographs featuring cast and crew working on the set and 16 feature images of Renoir on the set. <br/><br/>Also included are two vintage borderless press photographs depicting scenes for the film. Each with the stamp of "Telerama" on the verso along with holograph annotations identifying the film and for layout. <br/><br/>Renoir's loose adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson's 1886 novella "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" premiering at the Venice Film Festival followed by airing on French television and an international theatrical release. <br/><br/>Proof photographs and negatives roughly 2 x 2 inches. Vintage reference photograph from the 1951 film showing Renoir giving directions to an actor while members of the crew look on. <br/><br/>Based on the 1946 novel by Rumer Godden who adapted it for the screen with Renoir. The film's crew included Satyajit Ray who worked as an assistant director on the film after meeting Renoir. Ray's longtime cinematographer Subrata Mitra also worked on the film and the two would come to international attention four years later with "Pather Panchali."<br/><br/>Set and shot on location in India. <br/><br/>10 x 8 inches. Santa Ana CA: RKO Radio Pictures 1942. Final Draft screenplay for the 1942 film. Copy belonging to legendary screenwriter Dudley Nichols inscribed by Nichols to Los Angeles Times film critic Phil Scheuer on the title page: "By Dudley Nichols / Confidential! / For Phil Scheuer from D. Nichols-with admiration." Nichols' ownership name is also in holograph pencil at the top right corner.<br/><br/>Renoir's second American feature an antifascist propaganda film following a meek schoolteacher in a German-occupied European country who is falsely accused of murder and forced to take a stand against the Nazis and their collaborators. <br/><br/>At the peak of his career Nichols worked with many key Golden Age directors including John Ford George Cukor Howard Hawks Fritz Lang and of course Jean Renoir. He was a founding member of the Screen Writers Guild and is best remembered for "The Informer" 1935 for which Nichols won an Academy Award "Bringing Up Baby" 1938 "Stagecoach" 1939 "For Whom the Bell Tolls" 1943 "Scarlet Street" 1945 "And Then There Were None" 1945 "The Bells of St. Mary's" 1945 and "The Tin Star" 1957. He continued to write prolifically for film up until the time of his death in 1960. <br/><br/>Housed in a custom quarter-leather clamshell box. <br/><br/>Pink titled wrappers noted as FINAL on the front wrapper rubber-stamped copy No. 104 dated OCTOBER 2 1942 with credits for director Jean Renoir and screenwriter Dudley Nichols. Two larger gloss finish photographs and two smaller matte finish photographs and contact sheet containing eleven images.<br/><br/>Jean Michel Rollin Roth Le Gentil more commonly known as Jean Rollin had gained notoriety and some scandal with his early French vampire films "Le Viol du Vampire" 1968 "La Vampier Nue" 1970 "Le Frisson des Vampires" 1970 and "Requiem pour un Vampire" 1971. Paris: Franfilmdis / Argui-Film 1933. Collection of three vintage oversize double weight studio still photographs for the landmark 1933 silent film by Jean Vigo. Each with the stamp of French weekly "Tele Magazine" on verso two with holograph annotations regarding layout. <br/><br/>Although he only made four films before his death from tuberculosis at the age 29 Jean Vigo would come to have an outsized influence on cinema particularly the French New Wave with Truffaut in particular paying homage to the anarchic boarding school students in "Zero for Conduct" during the classroom and recess scenes in "The 400 Blows." <br/><br/>11.75 x 9.75 inches with wide bottom margins.
