Based on the 1972 crime novel "The Procane Chronicle" by Ross Thomas writing as Oliver Bleeck. The first of no fewer than ten films director Thompson would make with badass Charles Bronson and ironically one of the last produced by a major studio. The pair would go on to make taut violent potboilers such as "10 to Midnight" 1983 "The Evil That Men Do" 1984 and "Murphy's Law" 1986. Raymond St. Ives Bronson is a novelist drawn back into the world of his former profession of crime reporting by wealthy Abner Procane Houseman. St. Ives is hired to locate stolen documents with ties to the local mob. Janet Whistler Bisset is an associate of Procane's accompanying St. Ives but her motives are vague. A hardened LAPD detective Bronson is growing older and slipping into a life fueled by alcohol when he is framed by ex-convict Joan Freeman Snodgress as vengeance for putting her in jail years later. In jail he is handcuffed to Arabella McGee Willhoite a foul-mouthed petty criminal he put behind bars as well with whom he escapes prison and sets off to prove Freeman is the true killer. After a twisted story with bad cops with mob connections and a criminal who is more a friend than imagined the film ends with a showdown in which McGee's life hangs in the balance.
