‎Très exceptionnel lot de publications d’oeuvres de Cicéron sorties des presses de Jean Rihel à Strasbourg en 1574 et conservées dans leur reliure d’époque à l’esthétique homogène. Ensemble comprenant : In Hoc Volumine Haec Continentur (ou Rhetoricorum) reprenant ainsi que le volumen secundum de l’Orationum volumina tria et les deux tomes du Librorum Philosophicorum, ces deux dernières ayant éditées d’après les éditions aldines par l’humaniste protestant Jean Sturm, fondateur de l’université de Strasbourg connu pour ses éditions et commentaires des antiques et plus particulièrement Cicéron auquel il vouait une admiration toute particulière. Jean, ou Josias, Rihel est libraire-imprimeur à la suite de son père de Wendelin dont il prend la suite en 1555. Travaillant directement pour le gymnase, ils firent paraître Jean Sturm, Jean Sleidan (dont Jean Rihel fut le tuteur) mais aussi Calvin, qui leur confia la deuxième puis la troisième édition de son Institutio Religionis Christianae. Reliure 1574, Strasbourg. Quatre volumes in-8, reliure pleine peau de truie à encadrement de l’époque, décors identiques sur chaque volume, dos à quatre nerfs, caissons estampés à motifs floraux, tranches rouges. Textes imprimés en italiques à la façon d’Alde. Philosophicorum (VD16 C 2857) - T.I: [8], 251ff. et [41]; T.II: [8], 214, [14] ff. Orationum volumen secundum (VD16 C 3346) - [8], 281, [17] ff. In Hoc Volumine Haec Continentur (VD16 C 3894) - [8], 382, [9] ff. Si l’encadrement du cartouche central est identique sur les deux plats, se composant de roulettes, de portraits en médaillons et de la citation Gott Ist Mein Heil découpée en quatre petits cartouches, les scènes figurées diffèrent quant à elles. Celle du premier plat reprend l’allégorie du serpent et du crucifix telle qu’interprétée par le philologue et traducteur de la Bible Sante Pagnini dans son Isagoge ad mysticos sacrœ scripturæ sensus. Un passage en a d’ailleurs été inscrit Sicut Moses Exaltauit Serpentis. Le second plat quant à lui montre Jonas rejeté de la baleine sur le sable et envoyé par Dieu vers Ninive, passage également accompagné infra d’une citation en allemand. L’ensemble des reliures ainsi que les corps de textes demeurent encore aujourd’hui dans un très bel état de conservation. Seules sont à signaler les annotations à l’encre qui parcourent les ouvrages. In Hoc Volumine Haec Continentur Traité de rhétorique calqué sur l’édition aldine du De Arte Rhetorica augmenté ici des commentaires de Jean Sturm. Le volume comprend la Rhétorique à Herennius, dont l’attribution à Cicéron était déjà soumise à caution dans cette édition. Ouvrage abondamment annoté à l’encre dans les marges tout au long du texte. Infime déchirure du coin supérieur de la page de garde. Orationum volumina tria, volumen secundum Deuxième volume sur trois des Discours de Cicéron publiés par Sturm et reprenant également une édition aldine. Page de titre affichant une élégante marque typographique représentant vraisemblablement l’allégorie de la tempérance. Quelques annotations à l’encre sur le contreplat et discrète mention de Pausanias sur la garde. Annotations à l’encre disséminée dans l’ouvrage. Librorum Philosophicorum volumen I et II Recueil d'œuvres philosophiques de Cicéron publiée en deux tomes et comprenant notamment le Somnio Scipionis, fragment emprunt d’une poésie qu’on ne soupçonne pas et l’un des très rares (sinon le seul) de la République de Cicéron qui nous soit parvenu. Infime travail de ver sur le premier plat et le contreplat. Coin supérieur de la garde des deux volumes légèrement déchirés. Ex-libris au graphite sur le dernier contreplat.‎
