‎Leeser, Isaac.‎

‎SIDUR SIFTE TSADIKIM: ... KOLEL SEDER HA-TEFILOT LA-TA`ANIYOT KE-MINHAG ... SEFARADIM .... THE FORM OF PRAYERS: ACCORDING TO THE CUSTOM OF THE SPANISH AND PORTUGUESE JEWS. Vol III, part 2, only‎

‎Full tooled Leather , large 12mo. 144 pages. 18 cm. Hebrew text, parallel English translation. "Stereotyped by Slote and Mooney for the editor. " Singerman 1282. Sidur Sifte Tsadikim, Leeser's comprehensive Sephardic prayer book, was the first American prayerbook containing the liturgy for the entire year. It contains the original Hebrew text and an English translation. Starting with the 2nd Revised edition of 1853, Leeser changed to this smaller, 12mo, "more portable form...As to correctness, I pledge my word that the text and translation shall be far in advance of any which have hitherto appeared" (adv. In the Occident, Dec. 1851, cited in Goldman) . In the preface to the 1853 edition, Leeser noted the he had changed the translations of Bible passages to conform to the Bible translation he was completing elsewhere. This work thus contains the original Hebrew text and an English translation. Leeser marketed his prayer book both to audiences in American and the British colonies in the Caribbean, and he thus included prayers on behalf of a Monarch and a Republican government. Reprinted a number of times throughout the 19th & 20th Centuries, it became the standard prayer book for Sephardic Jews in North America. Leeser founded the first Jewish Publication Society of America and "brought many important works to the attention of the American Jewish community. He published the first Hebrew primer for children (1838) , the first complete English translation of the Sephardi prayer book (1848) [sic 1837-8], and numerous textbooks for children. He founded the first Hebrew high school (1849) , the first Jewish representative and defense organization in 1859 (the Board of Delegates of American Israelites) , Maimonides College, and the first American Jewish rabbinical school in 1867. His major literary achievement was the first American translation of the Bible, ...published in 1845. This became the standard American Jewish translation of the Bible until the new Jewish Publication Society translation of 1917....Leeser was a traditionalist who did much to stem the tide of Reform. Although he was identified with the Sephardi community his influence affected the entire community and he laid the foundations for many of the key institutions of present-day Jewish life. His contributions to every area of Jewish culture and religion made him a major builder of American Judaism. " (Jack Reimer, EJ) Contents of complete set: v. 1. Daily prayers [here missing]. --v. 2. New-year service. --v. 3. Day of atonement service [in 2 parts]. --v. 4. Tabernacle service. --v. 5. Passover and Pentecost service. --v. 6. Fast day service. SUBJECT(S) : Judaism -- Liturgy -- Texts. Jews. Liturgy and ritual. OCLC lists 2 institutions with holdings of 1856-1864 printings (Harvard & Penn). Changes between printings of the 2nd and 3rd editions were minimal, and size was the same. Goldman 36: "in the introduction, Leeser attempted to demonstrate why his text and translation were superior to the one published by his competitor, David Aaron de Sola, a London hazzan....Leeser ordered new Hebrew types from abroad for this work and had to teach Hebrew to the typesetters, Benjamin George Smith...and Jacob Washington Fletcher.... We located no other sets of any edition of this work having come up for auction in the last decade. Light wear to leather, chip to bottom of spine, otherwise Very Good. (AMRN-14-22)‎

‎SEDER HAGADAH: DOMESTIC SERVICE FOR THE EVE OF PASSOVER (ADAPTED FROM THE GERMAN OF LEOPOLD STEIN)‎

‎Softcover, 12mo, 63 pages, music, 19 cm. 5th Revised and Enlarged Edition. SUBJECT (S) : Haggadot -- Texts. Seder -- Liturgy -- Texts. Other Titles: Haggadah. English & Hebrew. Moses (1847-1926) was a “U. S. Reform rabbi. Moses, who was born in Zaniemysl, Poznan, had not completed his education before he settled in the United States in the early 1870s. He was appointed to rabbinic positions in Quincy, Illinois, Milwaukee, and Chicago. In 1901 he became rabbi of the Central Synagogue, New York, where he remained until his retirement in 1919. In his early days in the United States, Moses was considered a radical Reformer, but later he took a more moderate position. In 1884 he introduced his own prayer book (Tefillat Yisrael) . Moses was a founding member of the Central Conference of American Rabbis and a member of the Reform committee charged with compiling an official prayer book. The appearance of the Union Prayer Book in 1894 has been credited to his personal initiative in preparing and circulating a manuscript when the committee’s work seemed to be leading nowhere. Moses also published a number of sermons and textbooks for children. His Sabbath School Hymnal, first issued in 1894, ran into 14 editions. While in Milwaukee, he edited the weekly Der Zeitgeist” (Temkin in EJ, 2007) . OCLC lists 3 copies worldwide (Harvard, Hebrew Union, Nat Lib of Israel) . Light wear to binding. Very good condition. ‎SONGS AND PRAYERS AND MEDITATIONS FOR DIVINE SERVICES OF ISRAELITES.‎

‎Leather; small 8vo. Iv, 104, vi, 590 pages. Embossed boards; raised bands; gilt titles; burgundy endpapers. Title page on verso: "Abodath Yisrael (in Hebrew) : Israelitish Prayer Book for all the Public Services of the Year. " English and Hebrew on facing pages. Appendix page 579 ff. Benjamin Szold was a Hungarian-born rabbi who became rabbi to Congregation Oheb Shalom in Baltimore. "Oheb Shalom was then on the verge of becoming Reform, but Szold led it to a Judaism which allowed for innovations in ritual practice, but not in basic tenets. He recognized and employed the educational potential of the regular Sabbath sermon. He introduced his own prayer book, Avodat Yisrael (1867) , to replace the previously used Minhag Amerikah (1857) by I. M. Wise, and the traditional siddur. The Avodat Yisrael was widely adopted by congregations throughout the country. Under Szold's leadership Oheb Shalom became one of the foremost American congregations. " (Gladys Rosen, EJ) Marcus Jastrow was a Polish-born rabbi and author who emigrated to the United States and became rabbi to Rodeph Shalom, a congregation in Philadelphia largely composed of German immigrants. He introduced some reforms, such as the use of an organ and of this prayer book; however; he opposed radical reform and emerged as one of the leaders of the historical school, which developed into Conservative Judaism. (EJ) "The authors of the American prayer-books were extremely radical in the abridgment of the Hebrew text and in eliminating all references to a personal Messiah, the restoration, and the resurrection of the dead, and in place of "resurrection, " "immortality" was sometimes substituted. " (JE) Singerman 2399; Deinard 946. SUBJECT: Jewish hymns. Hymns, English. OCLC lists 3 copies worldwide (NY Public Library, Union Theological Seminary, JNUL) . ‎Blinder, Yaakov; Asher Bergman; Shalom Meir Wallach‎

‎The Haggadah of the Roshei Yeshivah: Illuminating Thoughts from the Century's Great Torah Leaders [Book 1 and Book 2]‎

‎(FT) Hardbound. 8vo. 303; 309 pages. 24 cm. Two volumes; first edition [Volume 1: "The Grossman edition"; volume 2: "The Ray edition"; not included is volume 3: "The Weinstock edition. " Each stands on its own]. Text in Hebrew and English on opposite pages, commentary in English. Haggadah of the roshei yeshivah, adapted by Yaakov Blinder, from the Hebrew by Asher Bergman, in association with Shalom Meir wallach. Description from the publisher: “Their very names inspire awe: Rabbi Isser Zalman Meltzer of Slutzk and Jerusalem; Rabbi Aharon Kotler of Kletzk and Lakewood; Rabbi Chaim Shmulevitz of Mir and Jerusalem; Rabbi Yaakov Yisrael Kanievsky, the Steipler Gaon of Bnai Brak; Rabbi Yaakov Kamenetsky of Torah Vodaath; and Rabbi Moshe Feinstein of Mesivtha Tifereth Jerusalem! Another year, another Haggadah. One often wonders what is left to say -- but no one will ask that question about this monumental anthology. For the first time in English, this volume brings together the ideas and expositions of six of the greatest luminaries of contemporary times, six revered and renowned roshei yeshivah, who, collectively, were the teachers and leaders of tens, even hundreds of thousands of Jews, all over the world. First in ‘Arzei HaLevanon, ’ the Hebrew predecessor of this volume, and now here, their discourses on the Haggadah are collected and set forth with taste and clarity. All of them were Torah geniuses, who saw lessons for today in the miracles of yesterday. To them, the Haggadah and the story of the Exodus were guideposts for life in every era. Their interpretations of the Haggadah are distinguished for depth, incisiveness, pure faith -- and the profound depth that marked their authors as the Torah leaders of three generations. ” With dustjacket. Subjects: Haggadot - Commentaries. Seder - Customs and practices. Seder - Liturgy - Texts. Judaism - Liturgy - Texts. Some accumulated dirt on lower edge from shelf wear, otherwise brand new. ‎Teitelbaum, Eli‎

‎Thoughts on the Haggadah‎

Teitelbaum founded and ran Camp S’dei Chemed International summer camp in Israel. Rabbi Eli Teitelbaum, an ultra-Orthodox educator and innovator, wrote this Haggadah after years of discussions with his students: “One must realize that many of their questions can probably be found in the Meforshim, and a variety of answers can be found in all four different parts of Torah, be it p’shat, remez, drush and sod. However, I’ve tried my best to answer them in the simplest manner possible in order to show them that their questions can be answered even on the very basic level. ” (From the Preface) . ‎Schalit, Heinrich‎

‎LITURGYAH SHEL LEL SHABAT = SABBATH EVE LITURGY: FOR CANTOR (BARITONE OR TENOR) , MIXED VOICES (SATB) AND ORGAN‎

‎Original Wraps. 4to. 91 pages. 27 cm. First edition. Musical scores throughout. “Heinrich Schalit is one of the principal names associated with serious mid-20th-century American synagogue music for Reform worship—although some of his settings had currency at one time in liberal Conservative synagogues as well. … Schalit was born in Vienna, where he studied composition with Robert Fuchs (1847–1927) and with Joseph Labor (1842–1924) , who was also one of Arnold Schoenberg’s teachers. In 1927 Schalit was appointed to the position of organist at the principal Liberale synagogue in Munich, whose learned cantor and productive resident composer, Emanuel Kirschner (1857–1938) —a former singer in the choir of Louis Lewandowski in Berlin and a follower in his path, albeit in a more artistically sophisticated vein—appears to have exerted a lasting influence on him. His first synagogue composition was a setting of v’shamru for the Sabbath eve liturgy, which he then incorporated into his first full Sabbath eve service, Eine Freitagabend Liturgie. That service, published in Germany in 1933 and later revised for American publication in 1951, remains one of his seminal achievements, notwithstanding his substantial subsequent oeuvre. By that time he had grown dissatisfied with what he called an 'unorganic mixture of traditional cantorial chants with congregational and choral music in the German style of the 19th century, ' and he felt that the synagogue of the 20th century required its elimination. Liturgical composition became for him a sacred calling, with a sense of mission that he posed as a challenge to contemporary Jewish musicians to 'prepare a change in style and outlook, ' as he wrote in the preface to his first service. His goal was to 'create a new, unified liturgical music growing out of the soil of the old-new, significant and valuable source material' that had become available through recent musicological studies. ” (Milken Archive) Subjects: Synagogue music - Sabbath services. Choruses, Sacred (Mixed voices, 4 parts) with organ. OCLC lists 22 copies. Institutional stamps on endpages and on wraps edges. Light wear to wraps, otherwise fresh and clean. Very good condition. He also notated Hassidic melodies, wrote original songs of Hassidic character, and composed Yiddish quasi-art songs—mostly in the style of elevated folksongs. He contributed articles about hazzanut and other aspects of Jewish music to various journals and periodicals, delivered papers at cantorial meetings, and, in a number of articles in Di khazonim velt [Di shul un di khazonim velt ]—an international cantorial newspaper published monthly in Warsaw from 1933 to 1939 but widely disseminated outside Poland—he reported on the state of cantorial art in America and on related professional matters and issues. ” (Milken Archive) Subjects: Synagogue music - Sabbath services.
