He also notated Hassidic melodies, wrote original songs of Hassidic character, and composed Yiddish quasi-art songs—mostly in the style of elevated folksongs. He contributed articles about hazzanut and other aspects of Jewish music to various journals and periodicals, delivered papers at cantorial meetings, and, in a number of articles in Di khazonim velt [Di shul un di khazonim velt ]—an international cantorial newspaper published monthly in Warsaw from 1933 to 1939 but widely disseminated outside Poland—he reported on the state of cantorial art in America and on related professional matters and issues. ” (Milken Archive) Subjects: Synagogue music - Sabbath services. ‎SHIRE ERETS YISRA'EL: MI-TA'AM HISTADRUT HA-MAKABI BE-GERMANYAH VE-HISTADRUT HE-HALUTS BE-GERMANYA‎

‎Original Wraps. 16mo. 208 pages. 17 cm. First edition. In Hebrew. Lyrics (romanized) --also printed as vocalized text in Hebrew script. Anthology of 230 zionist songs. Includes unacc. Melodies. Published by the Yudisher Ferlag of Berlin, under the auspices of Hechalutz and Maccabi World Union. “Jakob Schönberg was born in Fürth, Bavaria on September 8, 1900. His father, David Schönberg, was chazzan (cantor) at the Claus-synagoge in Fürth. ... Schönberg apparently earned his living during Germany's Weimar Republic (1919-1933) as a pianist, music critic, conductor and composer. He wrote articles for the Nürnberger Zeitung and served as a musical consultant for Bavarian Radio in Munich. Bavarian Radio performed some of his orchestral compositions. He also worked in films as a "musical conductor and illustrator" and some of his film music was published by Schott's Söhne, Mainz, and Hawkes and Son, London. Schönberg was interested in composing instrumental music — especially orchestral. His first orchestral work, Prelude Symphonique, premiered in 1923. ... His style of composition took a decidedly Jewish turn after the Nazis took power in 1933, and Jewish musicians could no longer be employed by Germany's state-supported cultural institutions. In 1934 Schönberg transcribed the folk songs and dance tunes of several halutzim (pioneers) visiting Germany from Palestine. The following year he published Shire Erets Yisrael (Songs of the Land of Israel) , an anthology containing 230 Hebrew songs (Berlin: Jüdischer Verlag, 1935) . From this time until, at least, when he left Germany, these Israeli melodies would figure prominently in Schönberg's work. He set several of them for voice with piano and voice with flute and viola. His Suite für Orchester, 3 Sätze utilizes a Horra melody from the anthology. Schönberg's orchestral Horras appear to have been extremely popular in Nazi Germany, and were performed numerous times by the Jüdischer Kulturbünde between 1936 and 1938, in both Berlin and Frankfurt-am-Main” (Jakob Schonberg Collection; JTSA) . Subjects: Zionism - Songs and music. Songs, Hebrew - Palestine. Jews - Palestine - Music. OCLC lists 21 copies. Corner chipped on wrap, previous owners stamp inside back wrap, very light wear. ‎Original wraps. 4to. 31 pages. 27 cm. First edition. Music and libretto by Abraham Wolf Binder, Musical Director of the Y. M. H. A. , and Jewish Center, New York City. Judas Maccabeus, An Oratorio in Two Parts. Judas Maccabeus “was successfully produced three months after it was composed. It was enthusiastically received by all who heard it. The children comprised the chorus and soloists, and a special orchestral arrangement was played by the Y. M. H. A. Symphony Club. This work can be given as an opera (with action accompanying the music) , or as an oratorio without action. ” (Preface) Abraham Wolf Binder (1895–1966) “was an American Jewish composer and scholar active in the intellectual and artistic Jewish music circles of early 20th-century New York. Revered alike as a composer, pedagogue, and writer, Binder also founded the Jewish Music Forum. ...As a composer, Binder is remembered chiefly for his numerous liturgical choral settings, which include many individual prayers as well as entire services. Music and libretto by Abraham Wolf Binder, Judas Maccabeus, An Oratorio in Two Parts. “Preface to Third Edition: When this oratorio was first performed by a group of young people at the Y. M. H. A. In 1917, music had just begin to play a part in Jewish education in this country. Since that time, it has found a definite place in the curricula of religious schools and other Jewish educational centers. The usefulness of this oratorio has grown from year to year, for it has been performed innumerable times from coast to coast in this country in a variety of ways, first as an oratorio, second, as an opereretta with costumes and scenery. A few years ago, it was presented as a 'Maccabean Pageant' in Los Angeles, with interspersed spoken dialogue. It has also been done in Hebrew. ” (Preface) Abraham Wolf Binder (1895–1966) “was an American Jewish composer and scholar active in the intellectual and artistic Jewish music circles of early 20th-century New York. ‎EXHIBITION OF JEWISH CEREMONIALS AND JEWISH FOLK ART; JUDAICA COLLECTION MR. AND MRS. JOSEPH B. HORWITZ‎

‎Original wraps. 8vo. 24 pages. 24 cm. First edition. Exhibition of Jewish Ceremonials and Jewish Folk Art: Judaica Collection, Mr. And Mrs. Joseph B. Horwitz, Fairmount Temple, Cleveland, Ohio, May 26, 1962. Descriptive list of 179 items from the extensive Horwitz collection, with 26 black and white illustrations. The Horwitz collection was donated to B'nai B'rith Museum: “But the Klutznick really burst onto the Jewish museum scene after Cleveland philanthropists Joseph and Olyn Horwitz donated their extensive Judaica collection to B’nai B’rith during the 1970s. The gift, which included a number of rare Italian artifacts, such as a 16th-century Torah wrapper and an 18th-century silk folder for a ketubah, a marriage contract, catapulted the museum into the ranks of major Jewish cultural institutions. Since B’nai B’rith was primarily a social welfare organization, it needed a specialist to care for and display such an important collection. So it hired its first museum expert, Anna Cohn, from the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute, in Williamstown, Mass. , in 1976. As the Klutznick Museum’s first director, Cohn said it took years to prepare, present and interpret the Horwitz collection, which she inherited 'well cared for' and still in its original boxes when she arrived at the museum. ” ('How B’nai B’rith’s Museum Went From Must-See Site to Oblivion' 'Klutznick Museum's Collection, Including George Washington's Famed Letter to Jews, Sits In Storage'; By Paul Berger; Published August 12, 2011, Forward) . Contains discussion of the significance and laws of the Feast, the Kindling of the Lights, and contains Hebrew passages from Talmud, Midrash, and Maimonides. Bachad was a religious Zionist youth movement in pre-war Germany called Brit Chalutzim Datiim which shortened its name “to its initial letters Bachad. Its members prepared themselves for Aliya. ‎(Jt) Alman, Samuel [Wolf Hecker’s Copy]‎

‎SHIRE BET-HA-KENESET [VOLUME 1]‎

‎Later Cloth. 4to. 161 pages. 32 cm. First edition. In Hebrew (and transliterated Hebrew) . 'Synagogue Compositions'. Published by Yuval (Juwal) of Berlin and Tel Aviv. Elaborately designed title page. For Mixed Chorus with and without Cantor. Volume two was later published at Oxford in 1938. Printers errors page printed on last leaf. Samuel Alman (1877–1947) , “composer of synagogue and secular music. Alman was born in Sobolevka, Podolia. From 1895 until 1903 he studied at the Odessa and Kishinev conservatories. While at Kishinev, he was strongly influenced by the cantor Razumni. After the Kishinev pogrom (1903) Alman went to London where he attended the Royal College of Music, and wrote a biblical opera King Ahaz (performed in 1912) . He served as choirmaster of various London synagogues (notably at Humpstead) and Jewish choral groups. Alman's style was deeply rooted in the Southern Russian cantorial tradition, and he owed much to the choral technique of the meshorerim ('choristers') , as heard in the compositions of N. Spivak. He solved the problem of modern harmonization by following (especially in his instrumental works) the impressionistic style of Debussy. Alman succeeded in preserving the melodic features and deep sentiments of the Eastern European Ashkenazi chant, often creating a mystical atmosphere. Among his published works are Shirei Beit ha-Knesset, 2 vols. (1925, 1938) , for cantor and choir; Psalm 15 (1915) for chorus and organ, and Psalm 133 (1934) for chorus and piano; 'Mi addir' and 'Sheva berakhot' (1930) for cantor and organ; Ethics of the Fathers (1928) ; many arrangements of Yiddish folk songs; and compositions for strings including the quartet suite Ebraica (1932) . In addition, he edited Shirei Rozumni (1930) and the supplement to F. L. Cohen's Voice of Prayer and Praise (1933) . ” - 2008 EJ. From the library of the famous Cantor Wolf Hecker, with his named embossed on front cover by his binder. Subjects: Synagogue music. Jewish chants. OCLC lists 11 copies. ‎(Jt) Naumbourg, Samuel‎

‎ZEMIROT YIS´RA'EL; I. CHANTS LITURGIQUES DE SABBATH. - II. CHANTS LITURGIQUES DES GRANDES FE^TES [TWO VOLUMES]‎

‎Original Wraps. Folio. 117; 103 pages. 34 cm. Second edition. In Hebrew (transliterated Hebrew) with introduction in French. Liturgy for the Sabbath and High Holidays. Two Volumes: Chants liturgiques de Sabbath - Chants liturgiques des grandes fetes. Volume three (Chants religieux des Israe¨lites) absent, though normally issued with this edition. Samuel Naumbourg (1815–1880) , was a “hazzan, composer, and writer. Born in Dennelohe, near Ansbach (Bavaria) , the descendant of almost ten generations of south German hazzanim, Naumbourg received his musical education at Munich and sang there in Maier Kohn 's synagogue choir. After an engagement as choirmaster in Strasbourg, he came to Paris in 1843. In 1845 he was appointed first hazzan at the synagogue in the Rue Notre-Dame-de-Nazareth, under the sponsorship of Jacques Fromental Halévy and with the government authorization to carry out his plans for a thorough reform of liturgic music (which had lapsed into disorder after the death of Israel Lovy in 1832) . In 1847 he published the first two volumes of his Zemirot Yisrael (vol. 1 for the Sabbath, vol. 2 for the High Holidays) , with vol. 3 Hymnes et Psaumes added when the work was reissued in 1864 (repr. 1874, 1954) . ... Naumbourg's Zemirot Yisrael achieved an influence comparable to the works of his senior Solomon Sulzer and his junior Louis Lewandowsky . The pieces are set for hazzan and 2- to 4-part choir, with some organ accompaniments and, apart from Naumbourg's own compositions and arrangements, include some melodies by Lovy and two works by Halévy and Meyerbeer . About half of the pieces are based on traditional material, mainly south German. The others reflect the various styles then current in the Parisian grand opera, which 'gave to Naumbourg's work some international features and helped it to become widely known, and much liked and used' (Idelsohn) . ” - EJ 2008. ‎HAMISHAH ASAR B'SHEVAT PROGRAM MANUAL‎

‎Original Wraps. 4to. 20 pages. 28 cm. Revised edition. First published January 1948. “Revised January 1949.” Important early statehood document as the holiday was gaining a new meanting in the new Jewish state. Typewritten duplicated printing; wraps typeset, dated January 1948 (wraps re-used from original printing) . Prepared by Norman Schanin, for National Young Judaea, under the auspices of the American Zionist Youth Commission. Program manual for the celebration of Hamishah Asar B'Shevat; with a history of the origin and meaning of the holiday, its significance for American Jews, observing the holiday in a group, the trees of Israel, and games, crafts and projects for the classroom. Contains a one page bibliography at rear. "[I]n 1948 the Zionist dream of an independent State of Israel miraculously came to pass, and one of the first things the settlers did when they came back to their land was to plant trees and develop moshavim (collective farms) . Reforesting the land by planting trees during Tu B'Shevat eventually became national custom. Today Israeli schoolchildren plant trees in special ceremonies (neti'at etzim) . And people living the Disapora often donate money to plant trees in Israel through the services of the Jewish National Fund. Tu B'Shevat therefore resembles an 'Israeli Arbor Day' when trees are planted and the rebirth of the Jewish homeland is celebrated" (John Parsons, 2015) . Subjects: Tu bi-Shevat - Study and teaching. ‎1st edition. Original Boards, Folio, 92 pages, illustrated, 36 cm. SUBJECT(S) : Judaism -- Liturgy -- Texts. Haggadot -- Texts. Seder -- Liturgy -- Texts. Text in English & Hebrew; ceremonial directions in English. Hebrew title romanized. “Ha-tsiyurim ma’aseh yede Sha’ul Raskin” on title page verso. Imprint from title page verso. Color printing; title page in green and purple. Other Titles: Haggadah. English & Hebrew. Raskin (1878-1966) was an “illustrator, painter, printmaker, critic. Born in Nogaisk, Russia, Raskin studied lithography in Odessa, and attended art academies in Germany, Switzerland, France, and Italy. In 1904, he emigrated to the U. S. He worked in many media and garnered a reputation for his draftsmanlike attention to detail and his realistic approach. His imagery depicted scenes of Jewish life, especially that of New York’s Lower East Side. His trips to Palestine yielded many representations of that country’s Jewish population, among them twenty lithographs of Jerusalem. Raskin also illustrated many Hebrew texts, including Pirke Aboth, the Haggadah, Psalms, the Siddur, Kabbalah in Word and Image, and other works with Jewish content, such as Hebrew Rhapsody. Pirke Aboth demonstrates Raskin’s wonderful sense of design; he makes dramatic use of blank space as a component of his compositions as well as underscores the meaning of each of the book’s sections with a powerful combination of human and fantastic forms, each revealing carefully rendered details of expression. Raskin was the art and theater critic for the Yiddish weekly magazine Does Neie Land. In 1911, Raskin’s “The Future of Jewish Art, ” appeared in the magazine. In the article, Raskin bemoans the inability to find common Jewish attributes in the works of such artists as Antokolsky, Israels, Liebermann, and Pissarro. Raskin postulated that a Jewish Art (sic) might emerge through the identification of common themes and subjects in the work of his contemporaries, specifically in genre and history paintings, rather than through an examination of the widely varied techniques, forms, and styles used by artists of Jewish heritage. Raskin’s work has been exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago, the National Academy of Design, and the Pennsylvania Academy. His work has been collected by many major museums and galleries, including the Brooklyn Museum” (Buchwald in EJ, 2007) . Very Good Condition. (HAG-8-28D) xx‎

‎Temple Emanu-El, (James Koppel Gutheim) [Felix Adler]‎

‎HYMNS FOR DIVINE SERVICE IN THE TEMPLE EMANU-EL‎

‎8vo; 1st Edition. Modern Cloth, all edges gilt. 12mo. 71 pages ; 18 cm. Contains what are almost certainly the first published works of Felix Adler (at 20 years old), founder of the Ethical Culture Movement. James Koppel Gutheim (1817-1886) was the rabbi of Congregation Shangarai Chasset of New Orleans. He was an influential figure in New Orleans, and served as president of the New Orleans Board of Education. “In 1863… he refused to take the oath of allegiance to the Union after New Orleans was recaptured. He fled New Orleans, and served as rabbi to Jewish congregations in Montgomery, Alabama, and Columbus, Georgia. Gutheim returned to New Orleans after the Civil War, to serve as Shangarai Chasset's rabbi, but left to serve in New York’s Temple Emanuel in 1868. In 1872 he once again returned to New Orleans to become minister of the New Orleans Temple Sinai, where he preached until his death.” (Wikipedia, 2016) This hymnal was compiled while Gutheim served at Temple Emanu-el in New York, where Felix Adler’s father, Samuel Adler, had been the Head Rabbi since 1857. At the time, Emanu-El “was the leading Reform congregation in the US.” (Wikipedia, 2016) Most of the 37 hymnals are by Gutheim, but 6 (including 4 original compositions) are by Felix Adler, Samuel Adler’s son. Felix Adler (1851-1933) would later found the Ethical Culture movement. While training to become a Rabbi in Heidelberg from 1871-1873 he was strongly influenced by neo-Katianism notions that one cannot prove or disprove the existence of a deity or immortality, and that morality can be established independently of theology. Giving up his Rabbinic studies, Adler founded the Ethical Culture Society in 1877 and the Workingman’s School (a free elementary school, which would become the Ethical Culture School) in 1878. The four original hymns, written before Adler rejected the notion of a Jewish God, are religious. They also show Adler’s esteem for Education. In “School Hymn,” he writes, “But what flower is so fragrant, so sweet and so fair/As the flower of truth blooming here—.” OCLC lists 9 copies worldwide. SUBJECT(S): Jewish hymns.
