‎Die geestelike brulocht is the Middle Dutch opus magnum of Jan van Ruusbroec (1293-1381), the Flemish mystic who lived in Brussels as priest at St.-Gudule church before retreating into the Foret de Soignes to become the first prior of the regular canon priory of Groenendaal. In the Brulocht Ruusbroec describes from experience the three stages of the mystical life, culminating in the contemplative life. First known in and around Brussels, and later throughout the Low Countries, Ruusbroec soon became renowned up to the foot of the Alps. The dissemination of Ruusbroec's texts was greatly enhanced by three early Latin translations of Willem Jordaens (? - 1372), a confrere at Groenendaal. His translation of Die geestelike brulocht in particular, as stylistically exuberant as it was accurate with regard to its mystical-theological content, gave Ruusbroec an immense stature. Willem Jordaens's De ornatu spiritualium nuptiarum was soon disseminated in Brabant, France, England and Italy, even reaching present-day Poland. This early distribution was, it seems, brought to a halt by repeated condemnations from c. 1400 on by the Paris chancellor Jean Gerson (1363-1429), the irony being that it was De ornatu that brought Ruusbroec's Geestelike brulocht to Gerson's attention. The value of the text was rediscovered by Jacques Lefevre d'Etaples, who, through the 1512 Paris edition of De ornatu by Henri Estienne, used it in the spread of Christian humanism in sixteenth-century France. ‎Die Erforschung der Pseudo-Chrysostomica hat seit 1968 mit den Codices Chrysostomici Graeci und mit der Ubersicht uber noch nicht editierte Texte, die M. Geerard 1974 im zweiten Band der Clavis Patrum Graecorum zusammengestellt hat, fur jene Patristiker, die an kritischen Editionen von Homilien arbeiten, grosse Fortschritte gemacht. Die Texte selbst sind aber bisher einem grosseren Kreis interessierter Patristiker nicht zuganglich geworden; wollte man auf kritische Editionen denselben warten, in denen die Uberlieferungsgeschichte anhand aller uns noch zuganglichen Zeugen geklart wird, dann besteht wenig Hoffnung, dass sie in kommenden Jahrzehnten jenen Patristikern und allgemein jenen Philologen bekannt werden, die nicht unmittelbar mit den betreffenden Handschriften selbst arbeiten. Die Clavis von M. Geerard nennt allein 239 nicht editierte Texte, und diese Liste ist bei weitem nicht vollstandig. Sucht man nach einem Weg, alle bekannten Pseudo-Chrysostomica so schnell wie moglich gedruckt vorlegen zu konnen und dennoch einen im allgemeienen vertraubaren Text zu schaffen, dann kan dies nur bedeuten, dass man in Ausgang von einer oder mehrerer "guter" Handschriften den Text ohne jeden Apparat und ohne irgendeinen Kompromiss in Richtung einer kritischen Edition wiedergibt. Die Texte, die Bernard de Montfaulcon (1655-1741) geschaffen hat, leisten uns noch heute nutzliche Dienste; und wer vor allem am Inhalt von Texten interessiert ist, wird deren Aussage im allgemeinen auch mit einem Migne-Text gut erfassen. Das wissenschaftliche Ideal einer kritischen Edition wird damit nicht in Frage gestellt, sicher nicht von den Herausgebern dieses neuen Instrumentum studiorum. Language : Greek.‎

‎Fur den dritten hier vorliegenden Band der Briefe Augustins kann auf die Einfuhrungstexte in Bd. 31-31A verwiesen werden, deren erster Abschnitt sich, wie angemerkt, auf die Gesamtheit der Briefe bezieht und damit einen Uberblick uber den Bestand der Briefsammlung gibt, deren darauf folgenden Abschnitte sich dann aber wesentlich auf die dort vorgelegten Briefe 1-100 bezieht. Der hier folgende Abschnitt fuhrt den Leser in die nunmehr vorgelegten und in gleicher Weise bearbeiteten Texte der Briefe 101-139 ein, wobei das Arbeitsmaterial im wesentlichen Auskunft gibt zum Bestand der Briefsammlung. Die hier direkt benutzte handschriftliche und Neben-Uberlieferung des Textes, zusammengestellt in einer Traditio textus fur die einzelnen Briefe, die indirekten Zeugen (bis etwa 800), sowie ausserdem noch zusatzliche Bemerkungen zu Einzelheiten des Textes sind angefugt. Dem Textverstandnis sowie einem eingehenden Studium dienen, wenn der Leser den Verfassern der einzelnen Briefe oder Traktate, den Absendern und Empfangern und den Beweggrunden ihrer Briefe nachgehen will, die notwendigen Indices nominum et auctorum, dazu eine Ubersicht der Bibelzitate in den Indices locorum S. Scripturae (in beiden Richtungen), ein Quellenapparat und schliesslich eine ausgewahlte Bibliographie. Die hier vorgelegt Korrespondenz (epist. 101-139) fallt in die Jahre von 408/409 bis 411/412. Dieser Gruppe von Briefen zeitlich zuzurechnen sind u.a. auch die Schriften, die man zu den exegetischen Quaestiones et Solutiones libri in Briefform rechnen kann, z.B. epist. 140 (De gratia testamenti noui), und schliesslich und besonders hervorzuheben die sogenannte Akte Marcellinus (mit einer Antwort auf ein Edikt des Marcellinus, das sich mit dem bevorstehenden Konzil von Karthago 411 inhaltlich und organisatorisch beschaftigte) und die Korrespondenz Augustins mit den neben Marcellinus bedeutenden hochgestellten romischen Beamten Apringius, Volusianus und Caecilianus (epist. 128, 132-139); bei dieser Korrespondenz geht es vorwiegend um die Bewaltigung des donatischen Schismas, eine Auseinandersetzung, die die ganze Zeit der vorliegenden Korrespondenz beschaftigt hat. ‎Written in 1159, the full text of Policraticus survives in over 60 manuscripts. This new critical edition is the first to examine all the surviving twelfth and thirteenth century manuscripts, as well as some later ones. The text is based on 11 manuscripts, ranging in date from c. 1160 to 1406. The detailed examination of the manuscripts and the manuscript tradition in the Introduction isolates two authorial versions of the text. Both versions were recorded in London BL Royal 13 D IV, the earliest and most authoritative of the extants manuscripts. This manuscript was used by the last editor, C.C.J. Webb, for his 1909 edition, but his preference for MS Corpus Christi College, Cambridge 48 meant that in effect he printed the earlier version of the text. The evidence of Royal 13 D IV suggests that Salisbury revised the text to produce his second version before he went into exile in 1166. The evidence of two later manuscripts indicates that a major revision of the text, constituting a non-authorial third version, originated in Italian jurist circles in the mid-fourteenth century. The manuscript tradition bears comparison with that of Salisbury's other major work, Metalogicon (the subject of a recent exhaustive study by Dr Keats-Rohan), which has been revealed as the key to Policraticus by P. von Moos and others. The readings of the four previous editions have been added to those of the MSS in the apparatus criticus, in order to produce a full account of the textual transmission of the work. The new edition adopts C.C.J. Webb's acclaimed apparatus fontium in extenso, though the opportunity has been taken to revise and to augment it, based on the publications of recent years as well as archive work. In addition, quite apart from reference to John's sources, Webb's app. font. contains much information about the way that Policraticus was used by later writers. Languages: Latin.‎
