In very good condition. Covers a little worn; edges rubbed corners bumped and chipped chips to top ends of spines. Some minor rubbing to faces of boards. Unusual bindings with boards inset with light brown calf leather to insides of boards marbled endpapers on one side only. Neat previous owners inscriptions to prelims “M. Raper.” MAin title page is darkened some chips to edge and tear to bottom corner but has been professionaly backed small strip of paper reinforcement along top edge of first page. First 2 pages of Genesis are lacking and replaced with hand-written paper. Occasional handling marks minor darkening and some foxing to pages. Mounted red leather and gilt spine label. THIS IS THE FIRST COMPLETE ENGLISH LANGUAGE CATHOLIC BIBLE TO BE PUBLISHED IN A SINGLE VOLUME FOLIO. The complete Bible containing the Challoner-MacMahon revised text. In excellent condition for its age. There is almost no foxing spotting or soiling in text; no tears; no wrinkling. The two "Admonition" pages after titlepage are loose but still attached. No owner marks. There are 10 fullpage steel engravings on rectos only engraved by Parker Schiavonette Bartolozzi Raphael others. It does appear that one plate has been removed at p. 25 All plates are lightly foxed. Hinges not cracked in or out . Cover extreme tips have leather worn off and spine ends are worn down somewhat. This was a Bible that clearly was used with great care and respect. It is housed in a contemporary hand-sewn linen jacket with hand-embroidered "Holy Bible" on front panel although quite aged this cover is in good condition with just two small chips along one outer hinge and a closed 3 inch tear along top spine end. Typesetting conforms to the American Bible Society's standard. Bound in heavy gilt-tooled leather with raised bands and gilt page edges this edition is structured for both public display and frequent home use. The double-column layout includes marginal scriptural references throughout with generous margins and wide spacing. All 15 full-page engraved plates are present printed on thick paper stock with numerous in-text illustrations. The interior is complete and tightly bound with moderate age-toning but no tears losses or annotations. The gilt decoration remains clear and the spine titling legible. Extremely large readable font with footnotes. Numerous engravings throughout. Despite its delicate contemporary binding still an imposing book. Very heavy weighs 9 kilos when packed. [.] In 1840 5,000 copies of the first complete translation of the New Testament were printed in Smyrna by the British and Foreign Bible Society. A second edition which was printed in Smyrna in 1850 was an almost exact reprint of the 1840 edition. A third edition followed in 1853 with 15,000 copies. The fourth edition was published in 1857 in Bucharest, and for the first time civil characters type was used. In 1859, two more editions were published. In 1866, a new "pocket" edition with text revised by Elias Riggs and Dr. Albert Long was printed in Constantinople. The New Testament was revised and reprinted a total of nine times. In the period from 1840 to 1860 the Eastern (Tarnovo) dialect was adopted as literary Bulgarian language and the Macedonian dialect, in which the New Testament had been translated, was widely rejected. By 1858 Neofit Rilski had finished large portion of the Old Testament. Riggs met with Neofit Rilski and discussed a possible revision of the Bulgarian New Testament to remove the Macedonian dialect elements. Neofit objected the revision, so Riggs took the translation and returned to Constantinople. In January 1859 Riggs invited the Bulgarian teacher Hristodul Kostovich to help him with the revision. In 1862 Long and Riggs visited the noted Bulgarian writer and poet Petko Rachov Slaveykov in Tryavna. Slaveykov agreed to help with the translation and began the work on the revising of Neofit's New Testament at once. Long joined the revision of the New Testament into the Eastern dialect in 1863 and later assisted with the translation of the Old Testament. In June 1871, after more than 12 years of revision and translation, 36,000 copies of the complete Bible translation in Bulgarian were published in Constantinople. The translation came to be known as the "Tsarigrad (Constantinople) Edition". Tsarigrad [or; Tsargrad, Tzargrad, Czargrad] Tsargrad is a Slavic name for the city or land of Constantinople, the capital of the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) Empire, and present-day Istanbul in Turkey.
