‎Corpus Christianorum. Clavis Patrum Graecorum. Indices. Initia. Concordantiae,‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 1987 Hardback, 293 p., 155 x 245 mm . ISBN 9782503050515.‎

Languages: Greek.‎

‎Corpus Christianorum. Adso Dervensis Opera hagiographica,‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2003 Hardback, LXXIX+366 p., 1 colour ill., 155 x 245 mm. ISBN 9782503049816.‎

‎Corpus Christianorum. Jan van Ruusbroec Opera omnia VII Van den XII. Beghinen. De vera contemplatione,‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2000 Hardback, IV+325 p., 155 x 245 mm. ISBN 9782503040714.‎

‎Ruusbroec (1293-1381) puts the Netherlands on the map of worldliterature. His greatness as a mystic author has been acknowledged internationally. His works contains eleven treatises and seven letters. There have been two editions of his work so far: one by J.-B.David (1858-1868) and one by the Ruusbroecgenootschap (1932-1934). Neither of these editions meets modern standards. Therefore a new critical edition was urgently needed. Of the ten volumes planned in this new edition, volume seven is the fifth to appear. The Middle Dutch text is based on a critical study of all manuscripts. Besides the Middle Dutch text the edition contains a new American-English translation and the Latin translation by L.Surius O.Carth. (1552). The edition of the Middle Dutch text is critically reconstructive. The text is accompanied by a variant apparatus, paleographic annotations, a textcritical commentary and a lemmatized vocabulary with localizations. The introduction sketches the historical circumstances in which each of the texts originated and outlines their contents. Finally it gives information about the manner of editing and about the manuscripts which contain the text in question. Languages: Middle Dutch, Latin, English.‎

‎Corpus Christianorum. Gerlacus Peters Opera omnia,‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 1996 Hardback, 580 p., 155 x 245 mm. ISBN 9782503045511.‎

‎Gerlach Peters (d. 1411) was a member of the so-called Devotio moderna. In the second half of the fourteenth century this religiuos reform movement arose in the Northern Netherlands, and strove after spiritual renewal for everyone. Its influence on the religious life of Northwestern Europe was considerable. Its most famous member was of course Thomas a Kempis. Gerlach Peters was a contemporary and colleague of Thomas. He is considered as the most important mystical author of the Devotio moderna. We dispose of two middle Dutch letters and two Latin works, Breuiloquium and Soliloquium. His Soliloquium was widely read in the Middle Ages, and it has been reprinted and translated up until today. This is the first critical edition of Gerlach Peters' Opera omnia, based on 72 extant manuscripts. The Middle Dutch letters are accompanied by a modern English translation, whereas the medieval translations of the Latin text have been critically edited. The book also contains an introduction, in which the life and work of Gerlach are treated. Attention is paid to the existing printings, reception and text history, genre and literary-historical aspects. In this book historians, theologians, medievalists and philologists will find new materials for the study of the religious life in Northwestern Europe in the fifteenth century. Languages: Latin.‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2008 Hardback, LXIV+183 p., 2 b/w ill., 155 x 245 m. ISBN 9782503051611.‎

‎The present publication is the first printing of Constitutiones quae vocantur Ordinis Premonstratensis. The text is preserved uniquely in Trinity College Dublin manuscript 10810 of circa 1200. This manuscript with its rather frequent modifications, affords a rare view of a religious code in transition. The manuscript offers a valuable picture of the life of medieval canons. The work is rich in details about the duties of those holding positions of responsibility, about religious obligations and punishments, reading, clothes, food and drink, courtesy, and looking after the sick. Much attention is given to the schooling and behaviour of the young. An extensive introduction discusses the group of canons for whom the Constitutiones was intended, and examines the manuscript and characteristics of the text like vocabulary. ‎Apocrypha Hiberniae I, 2: Euangelia infantiae,‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2002 Hardback, IV+714 p., 155 x 245 mm. ISBN 9782503411415.‎

‎In 1927 M. R. James published Latin Infancy Gospels, identified by him in two related but not identical manuscripts (one the British Library Arundel 404; the other from Hereford), together with a parallel text from the Irish manuscript known as the Leabhar Breac. Later researches brought to light more manuscripts of this Latin work, and also of the Irish text. James recognized that his apocryphal Latin Infancy text was compiled from a combination of the Protevangelium of James and a hitherto unknown text which he named "The Source". Recent research has identified a full Latin translation of the Protevangelium of James. A hitherto unrecognized Irish Infancy Narrative has also been identified in the Dublin manuscript known as the Liber Flavus Fergusiorum. A deep study of this related tradition was called for. This has been carried out over the past ten years by an Irish team in conjunction with Professor Daniel Kaestli and AELAC. The fruits of this labour are published in these two volumes. Volume 13 has a general introduction with a historical sketch of New Testament apocrypha in Ireland and a history of research on the subject. This is followed by a comparison of the Infancy Narratives in the Leabhar Breac and the Liber Flavus Fergusiorum. There are special introductions to these Infancy texts, followed by critical editions of the Irish texts, accompanied by English translations and rich annotation. Next there is similar treatment of the Irish versified Narrative (from ca. 700) of the Childhood Deeds of Jesus (commonly known as the Infancy Narrative (or Gospel) of Thomas. There is then (in volume 14, but with continuous pagination) the edition and translation of an Irish thirteenth-century poem with elements from Infancy Narratives, and both Latin and Irish texts on the wonders at Christ's birth, accompanied by translations and notes. The edition of the Irish material is followed by a critical edition of the full Arundel and Hereford forms of the Infancy Narrative (here referred to as the "J Compilation"), together with a detailed study of all the questions relating to this work. The volume concludes with a critical edition (by Rita Beyers) of the Latin text of the Protevangelium of James, accompanied by a detailed study of the work.. The work contains a detailed study of the Latin translations of the Protevangelium of James and the transmission of this work in the West. The "J Compilation" (a combination of the Protevangelium and texts of Pseudo-Matthew) can be traced back in manuscript transmission to ca. 800, and must have originated some time earlier. Behind it stands an earlier "I ("I" for Irish) Compilation" without influence from Pseudo-Matthew, the form found in the Irish witnesses. It is argued that M. R. James's "Source" may be of Judaeo-Christian origin and may really be the Gospel of the Nazoreans. Among the indexes there is a list of all the Irish words found in the texts. This edition of the Irish and related Latin texts is a major contribution to the study of the apocryphal Infancy Narratives. It should also be of particular interest to Celtic scholars, to students of Irish ecclesiastical learning, and in general to all medievalists. Languages: English.‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2010 Hardback, LXXVII+805 p., 155 x 245 mm. ISBN 9782503534473.‎

‎Published in 2010, this Latin-Spanish lexicon, or more precisely Latin-Romance-Spanish, studies the vocabulary of historiographical and diplomatic texts written in the kingdom of Leon - with the exception of Galicia - between the eighth century and 1230, the date of the definitive union between the kingdoms of Leon and Castille. Each entry provides all the written variants of the term in question, its etymology, its meaning or meanings, numerous examples presented in relatively extended contexts, and thorough commentaries and linguistic and historical notes. As well as constituting an indispensable tool for anyone interested in the history of the kingdom of Leon, it also of wider interest, especially linguistic. Indeed, the texts analysed are written in a language that may be described as both 'Latino-Romance' and 'diplomatic medieval Latin' (Cf. Introduction, p. LXIII). ‎Corpus Christianorum. Rabanus Maurus In honorem sanctae crucis,‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 1997 Hardback, CXX+342 pages., + 23 ill. + 32 plates, 155 x 245 mm. ISBN 9782503040011.‎

‎Rabanus Maurus (780-856), a monk and then abbot of Fulda, ended his career as archbishop of Mainz. Perhaps the most famous of his numerous works, the In honorem sanctae crucis (dated 810), better known traditionally since the Renaissance as De laudibus sanctae crucis, consists of a remarkable series of 28 carmina figurata glorifying the holy cross. Rabanus thus followed the Constantinian poet Porphyrius Optatianus, and also, but more discretely, some poems composed on this theme by Venantius Fortunatus. But from the outset he went further than his predecessors. Indeed, he did not compose a few isolated poems but a unified cycle. And the degree of complexity achieved by Rabanus in the tangle of versus intexti, of drawings, of each poem taken as a whole constitutes a kind of record for the genre that the Middle Ages did not surpass. The proposed edition follows the editio princeps of Jacques Wimpfeling (Pforzheim, 1503), the other editions (1605, 1627, and finally the Patrologia Latina) having been printed without recourse to the manuscripts. It consists of an introduction, the critical Latin text with the apparatus taking account of all of the ninth century manuscripts, and various annexes, which enable this difficult text to be read with the least inconvenience possible. There is a new French translation of the carmina figurata, explanatory notes of the carmina figurata and of their parallels, and several indexes. There is a colour reproduction of the carmina figurata as can be seen in the Vatican manuscript, Reginensis no 124. Languages: Latin.‎

‎M. Richard, J.A. Munitiz (eds.);‎

‎Corpus Christianorum. Anastasius Sinaita Quaestiones et responsiones,‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2006 Hardback, LXI+287 p., 155 x 245 mm. ISBN 9782503405919.‎

‎Scholarly appreciation of the Questions and Answers attributed to Anastasios of Sinai (CPG 7746) changed radically in 1969 with the publication by Marcel Richard of his short, but very dense, article, "Les veritables 'Questions et reponses' d'Anastase le Sinaite". By investigating the manuscript tradition Richard was able to establish that the version published by the German Jesuit, Jacob Gretser (1617), represented a revised version of the original and could not be much earlier than the eleventh century, whereas Anastasios had died shortly after 700. Richard further suggested that various other versions had existed before this and had been used by the later compiler, notably a collection of 88 questions. Gretser had also drawn on one of only 15 questions. Richard identified one other collection that seemed indebted to the original. Although Richard was the first to claim that he had discovered the original collection, from the time of Gretser all who had come across "Anastasian" quaestiones et responsiones had been aware that the published collection did not reflect the evidence of the manuscripts. Already in 1575 the French scholar Gentianus Hervet had published a Latin translation of what was in fact the collection of 88 questions. This collection had attracted wide attention because of its presence - in translation - in the Slavonic Izbornik of 1073. The present editor, Joseph A. Munitiz was asked by Richard shortly before his death in 1976 to complete the edition of the original collection. One might have hoped that since 1976, and in particular with the collation of the manuscripts discovered by Richard - for he himself had not drawn up any apparatus criticus for his proposed edition - it would have been possible to establish a text that was reasonably close to that first composed by the monk of Sinai. But it became clear over the years that some uncertainty was likely to remain. The many revisions and adaptations suffered by the original text meant that very few uncontaminated witnesses had slipped through the sieve created by Byzantine librarians and copyists. Only two manuscripts preserving a large proportion of the original collection have survived. Fortunately, a small number of partial manuscripts, and the evidence of the other Collections, allows one to build up a likely text. The haphazard nature of the content of the Original Collection does suggest that the whole collection may have originated after the death of Anastasios. A disciple or group of admirers may have felt that it would be helpful to publish the various questions and answers that had been composed during the author's lifetime and found in a dossier among his papers. At present this Original Collection contains the answers to certain groups of answers (e.g. concerning providence, alms giving, salvation of the non-baptised, wonders and prophecies, sexual ethics, forgiveness of sins), but intercalated among them are isolated problems with no obvious connection (e.g. concerning capital punishment, Paradise, dreams, female infertility). They all fall under the general heading of pastoral theology and are clearly intended to deal with the preoccupations of a lay, rather than a monastic, audience, even if their preservation was ensured by largely monastic compilations. ‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2004 Hardback, XXX+520 p., 155 x 245 mm. ISBN 9782503048314.‎

‎These two editions present Peter Abelard's Exposition of the Biblical Hexameron and a work which is a shorter version of this and which is usually called an Abbreviation. In his Exposition, which is much influenced by the commentaries of St Augustine, Abelard gives priority to the historical and literal sense and attempts a naturalistic explanation of the process of creation while retaining symbolic and moral interpretations. Like his contemporaries, William of Conches and Thierry of Chartres, Abelard shows an especial interest in Plato's Timaeus, in chaos theory, in the four elements, and in the anima mundi. But his Exposition is also a profoundly religious work. The manuscripts and the contributions of their various scribes are closely examined in an Introduction in which the possibility is considered that one of these scribes may be Abelard himself. Additions and changes made by the scribes are printed in different types in the edition which follows. A separate Introduction assesses the nature of the Abbreviation and compares it with the Exposition. The two editions were begun by Mary Romig+ and Charles Burnett respectively. They have been prepared for publication by David Luscombe. Languages: Latin, English.‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 1997 Hardback, XXIII+389 p., 155 x 245 mm. ISBN 9782503045313.‎

‎The first critical text of the widely and enormously influential Meditaciones vite Christi responds to a declared desideratum of scholars in a large number of disciplines dealing with devotional and mystical literature of the Middle Ages. A medieval 'bestseller' at one time attributed to Saint Bonaventure, this text at last sheds its neo-Latin overlay and sets in charming outline a synthesis of the new Franciscan movement. After examining over 100 manuscripts, Stallings-Taney has identified 4 manuscripts which contain a text unaltered by neo-Latin standards. She has collated these 4 as well as 7 fourteenth and fifteenth century manuscripts (edited as early as the fourteenth century according to neo-Latin standards) against the Vatican 1596 recension. The consensus of the early 4 manuscripts sets in place the original Italianized Latin of John of Caulibus, a humble Tuscan Franciscan, who had no other goal than the spiritual direction of an unknown Poor Clare nun. The consensus of the later manuscripts, recorded in the critical apparatus, preserves the neo-Latin text known to such translators as J. Meadows Cowper and Nicholas Love. Additionally, Stallings-Taney has re-established several lengthy passages once a part of the original text, but dropped in some of the printed recensions. Of special interest to liturgists is the extensive Index locorum liturgiae as well as the Index locorum S. Scripturae. An Instrumenta Lexicologica Latina fascicle will also be available very soon. ‎William of Malmesbury's Commentary on Lamentations is one of the rare works of biblical commentary produced by an English Benedictine in the twelfth century. Surviving complete in a single manuscript, and in burnt fragments of another, it is here edited for the first time. Although the work is explicitly based upon the ninth-century commentary by Paschasius, it is enriched by William's own wide and deep reading of the Bible, the Fathers and the Latin Classics. Here we find the great historian grappling with theological and moral issues both universal and personal, as he attempts to understand God's disciplining of His people, whether understood as the Jews, the Church, or the English of William's own day.
