SERENIUS JACOB
An English and Swedish dictionary: wherein the generality of words and various significations are rendered into Swedish and Latin . thereunto is added a large collection of terms of trade and navigation and an herbal or index of plants . The second edition with large additions and corrections
Printed at Harg and Stenbro near Nykoping in Sweden by Pet. Momma 1757. 4to pp. 8 16 unpaginated lexicon in double column; full contemporary Swedish calf red morocco label; rebacked with old spine laid down endpapers renewed; spine quite rubbed but generally a good sound copy. With a 'Table of Terms of Trade and Navigation' and 'Words of Command and Sea-Terms' occupying 17pp. at the back and another on herbal terms occupying another 12pp. Serenius chaplin to the Swedish embassy in London 1725-35 where he tried to strengthen the relations between Sweden and Great Britain. It was during this time that he began work on his dictionary Dictionarium Suethico-Anglo-Latinum first published in Stockholm in 1741. Termed second edition the present work is basically a new undertaking being twice the size of the original with a much expanded emphasis on etymology. Serenius states in his preface that he has been influenced by Edward Lye and 'in a manner excited by the late lexicographer Mr. Johnson that prodigy of laboriousness and sagacity who in the preface to his excellent Dictionary complains of a scanty knowledge in northern literature É I must own that the judicious author is aright." This must be one of the earliest acknowledgements by a foreign lexicographer of the achievements of Johnson. Serenius does not say so but it seems likely that some of the etymologies were borrowed from him.

unknown books

The immediate occasion for this now rare book written by the revolutionary officer late clergyman who had married Cresap's widow was the reopening of old sores by Doddridge in his then recently published Notes of 1824. WOMAN OWNER. The Way to Christ Discovered and Described
Bath: S. Hazard for T. Mills 1775. 8vo. xvii 3 445 1 pp. Modern full calf red morocco spine label. Displeasing glue residue in gutter margin of first blank and title-page both of which are a little browned age-toning throughout not objectionable; top edge of textblock with stain near the head-cap which did not permeate through the text itself. Provenance: Mary Knowles contemporary signature on title - see below. A good copy with faults and priced accordingly. Was the "Mary Knowles" who first owned this 18th-century English translation of Boehme's first work the same as the well known English Quaker mystic poet feminist and abolitionist namely Mary Morris Knowles 1733-1807. While we have been unable to procure an autograph of Mary Morris Knowles with which to compare the two signatures if she did not own this particular copy of Boehme it is almost certain that she had in her library at least one of Boehme's texts.

This edition was published by Thomas Mills ca. 1735-1820 formerly a clerk in the one of the Countess of Huntington's chapels where he preached "in the Methodist way." It is not without interest that in 1778 Mills became a Quaker sic.

A German shoemaker turned mystic Boehme's writings found renewed interest in England during the late 18th century influencing Quakers Methodists and mystics alike William Blake in particular. Boehme at the robust age of 37 in 1612 wrote his first treatise Aurora oder Die Morgenroete in Aufgang. In 1613 an unauthorized copy of the manuscript was copied and circulated by Karl von Ender. Its reception "raised him out of his homely sphere and made him the centre of a local circle of liberal thinkers considerably above him in station and culture." However the local pastor primarius of Gorlitz Gregorius Richter leveled a charge of heresy. The local muncipal council administered an admonishment to no further "meddle in such matters." This charge Boehme publicly followed for 5 years. In 1618 Boehme again started writing expository & polemical treatises. The majority of his works were written though not formally published from 1619 - 1624. A second major work Der Weg zu Christo was published in 1624 and signaled a renewal of clerical hostility. Boehem however was destined to suffer but a short period of this second persecution; he died of an illness on 17 November 1624. Boehme has been said to have a "fertility of ideas" and a "trasncendent greatness of religious insight." Boehme was studied by Sir Isaac Newton and influenced the work Henry More as well as and especially William Law 1686 - 1761. Xl Questions concerning the Soule was translated by the English mystic John Sparrow in collaboration with John Ellstone & financed by Humphrey Blunden. This the first of several works by Boehme that Sparrow & Ellstone were to translate into English between 1644 - 1662. Boehme proved to be highly popular in England where there were regular societies of Behmenists at the time. This work XL Questions went into a second edition in 1648 and a third edition in 1665. 11th EB. A scarce title in the Boehme canon. We find no copies currently offered via the major on-line databases OCLC records but 4 institional cc and the work has only appeared at auction 3 times in the last 25 years the last in 1989. BIGELOW Henry Jacob 1818 1890.
"Anaesthetic Agents Their Mode of Exhibition and Physiological Effects" Extracted from the Transactions of the Am. Med. Ass. Vol. I.
Philadelphia:: American Medical Association 1847/8. 1847. Offprint. Series: Transactions of the American Medical Association. Sm. 8vo. 18 pp. Contemporary plain brown wrappers probably as issued; extracted from a bound volume thus a remnant residue affecting spine. Front cover library withdrawal rubber stamp possibly: "Concord Free Public Library". Very good. First SEPARATE OF BIGELOW ON ANESTHESIA the journal form has an entirely different pagination being pages 197-214 in the 1847 issue. We believe this is the original offprint form of this paper by Bigelow. There are several clear differences between this offprint form and the journal issue is 1 the pagination for the offprint is 1-18 for the journal it is 197-214 and 2 the journal issue has "C.-1. at the head of the paper and foot of the page has no page number – whereas the offprint form adds the line "Extracted. . . raises the title text higher on the page and includes a page number "1" at the bottom left margin. There is no known textual difference.

"The committee considered in detail the various anesthetic agents. According to the report some surgeons were afraid to use anesthesia in their surgical operations feeling that the advantages afforded by the relief of pain might be offset by the risks involved. However even at this early date authors of this report felt that a large group of surgeons were wholly in favor of anesthesia. The authors did however admit that some surgeons would restrict the use of these agents to severe operations after the introduction of ether anesthesia in Boston it was not until several months later that the method became generally popular in other communities in the United States. The favorable reports of its use in Boston and in Europe made for the more extensive use in American communities in 1847 and 1848. The dangers of etherization were also considered. In some cases it was thought that convulsions prolonged stupor intense cerebral excitement alarming depression of the vital powers and asphyxia apparently were caused by the inhalation of ether and chloroform. Secondary effects attributed to inhalation in a few cases were bronchitis pneumonia and inflammation of the brain. Interestingly enough according to this report p. 190 ether was considered to be a safer drug than chloroform" Keys pp. 36-47.

"Dr. Bigelow was the unflinching advocate of sulphuric ether as the only safe anesthetic: and his unshaken opinion had a very wide and lasting influence. Bigelow instituted important and productive experiments in anesthesia. He inhaled new and untried anesthetic agents. He made practical and original studies of asphyxia and thoroughly established the fact that insensibility from the inhalation of nitrous oxide gas is largely due to asphyxia. He was also the first to show that anesthesia by nitrous oxide could be accomplished with certainty only by the use of a large volume of gas; and thus made the way plain to Colton and others for its successful adoption in tooth-pulling and in brief surgical operations" Mayo p. 603.

Bigelow 1818–1890 born in Boston studied at Harvard from 1833 and became a prominent surgeon and Professor of Surgery at Harvard University. "His 1846 article 'Insensibility during Surgical Operations Produced by Inhalation' detailed the discovery of ether anesthesia and was selected by readers of the New England Journal of Medicine as the 'most important article in NEJM history' in commemoration of the journal's 200th anniversary." "He was a vocal opponent of vivisection and was best known for his description of the hip joint and for a technique for treating patients with kidney stones." – Wikip. Illustrated by Gwenda Morgan. "Among the manuscript note-books of the brothers Grimm are a large number of the fairy-tales they collected with such tireless enthusiasm. A considerable number of these have never been available to the general reader and are virtually unknown. Wilhelm Hansen director of the Lippe Folk Museum had access to the manuscripts and selected fifty of these tales for us tales which Taylor who made the first English translation had described as 'most curious' and 'of great merit' but which he felt bound to suppress 'in deference to the scrupulous fastidiousness of modern taste especially in works likely to attract the attention of youth'. Gwenda Morgan's quaint engravings seemed to compliment these folk tales to perfection." Cock-A-Hoop Golden Cockerel Press hardcover books
