‎Stampless folded letter sent from London to merchants in Boston with a handstamp advertising Daniel's Life Preservers‎

‎London to Boston 1807. Envelope or Cover. Very good. This two-page stampless folded letter measures 14.5" x 9" unfolded. It is datelined "London 7th Jany. 1807" with a manuscript annotation "per Enterprise via New York" in the lower left corner. There is "36" rate marking along with a circular postmark in red that reads "New-York Mar. 9" and a matching red "Ship" handstamp. During opening a small piece was cut from the back to remove the wax seal. <br /><br />Of special interest is a clear strike of an oval handstamp on the reverse that reads <p style="margin-left:3%; margin-right:3%;">"Daniel's Life Preserver in case of Shipwreck Bathing & Wapping A National Concern Established 1806."<p>It would appear that the Life Preserver hand stamp only served as an advertisement as there is no postal reason for it to have been applied. <br /><br />Although there no records tying Jacob Cram to the Daniel's firm Parker & Poor were general merchants in Boston and major importers of British goods. Although the letter contents do not pertain to life preservers it is likely that the hand stamp was applied as an advertisement for the relatively new product. <br /><br />Following his grammar school education Francis Columbine Daniel was apprenticed in 1779 to a surgeon and apothecary in the East London Thames River community of Wapping and nine years later he opened his own office nearby. <br /><br />At the time the area was a hub of naval and maritime activity and having witnessed many drownings Daniel determined to find a way to save the lives of mariners and passengers who fell into the Thames. To that end he designed an "air jacket" that could be carried in a coat pocket and quickly inflated by means of a silver tube after which it would keep a wearer's head arms and upper body above the water surface. <br /><br />As part of his testing process Daniels conducted startling public demonstrations. In 1805 several men wearing early versions of his jacket jumped off the London Bridge and floated downstream while smoking pipes or playing musical instruments to the astonishment of a gathering crowd. The following year at a London regatta two men wearing his devices appeared to walk on the water while carrying a giant sack full of ships' biscuits and a third repeatedly fired a horse pistol into the air. <br /><br />Later that year Daniel began marketing his life preserver after it had received a gold medal from the Royal Humane Society. <br /><br />Exceptionally scarce. At time of listing there are no other examples of this handstamp for sale in the philatelic or ephemera trade. There are no records of other examples having been sold at auction and none are known to be held by institutions. <br /><br /> books‎

This is a very good to fine copy in original wrappers. The first article was originally published in the Boston Medical Surgical Journal in 1846. The second article is from the Transactions of the American Medical Association Vol. 1. <br/><br/>Bigelow had great concern for the suffering of surgical patients and was interested in finding an ideal agent which could be used as an anaesthetic. Ether had the potential to be of use though there was concern over its flammability. Bigelow used ether and published his observations on use of vapors from sulphuric ether in the Boston Medical Surgical Journal in 1846. In the present report Bigelow discusses the pros and cons on using ether vapors or chloroform and compares this in the second article with other anaesthetic agents. This clinical research was a major advancement for surgical operations where pain to the patient was greatly minimized or not felt during the surgery. G & M 5730. Full-page engraved architectural frontispiece of sacred muses holding holy attributes and 176 plates with 350 devices engravings by Aegidus Sadeler of Prague 1568-1629 laid out in ovals and medallions. 19th-century morocco with gilt monogram cipher of interlocking C’s as cornerpieces and to spine marbled endpapers all edges gilt; rubbing to extremities especially the head of the spine otherwise a good copy with rich impressions. Early monogram bookplate and another later of Bibliotheque I.G. Schorsch on front pastedown. A monogram and motto “Nunc nox mox lux” are stamped in green on the flyleaf. Another stamp to lower margin of title with French surname “Bourcier.” <br/><br/>Later Arnheim edition of Jacobus Typotius’s influential collection of emblems detailing parts of sacred ritual in the Latin West church. Typotius’s Symbola Divina et Humana was first published in Prague in three volumes from 1601 to 1603. An extant manuscript of the Symbola Divina et Humana dates to about 1590 and it is known that several copies were made and circulated through the court of Prague. Typotius a Flemish humanist scholar was court historian to Emperor Rudolf II. While his name takes precedence on the title page Typotius was possibly just one of four men responsible for this work. The designs were compiled by Ottavio Strada antiquarian to Emperor Rudolf III and were reproduced by the engraver Aegidius Sadeler. Typotius wrote the Latin commentaries on the impresa except in the fourth book which was the work of Anselm Boethius de Boodt physician to the same emperor. The imprese in Typotius’s work covers a vast array of subjects including the Santa Eucharista Holy Eucharist the Santa Crucis Holy Cross popes kings emperors and rulers of various nations princes clergy and cardinals. Some notable figures represented in imprese include French kings Philip I and Louis VII Henry VIII of England and his queens Anne Boleyn and Anne of Cleves James VI of Scotland Philip II of Spain and unsurprisingly Rudolf II of Bohemia. The first English edition appeared in 1686 in London by Moses Pitt of 1686; Chardin having settled in England after his travels and was knighted there by Charles II. The title was reprinted twice in Amsterdam in the original French at different locations. First at Abraham Wolfgang and then at Wolters and Haring as in this copy. Contemporary vellum ms. title on spine with foldover edges speckled edges; light soiling and few small stains few minor tears on engraved title or marginal wear to plates. A very nice copy with plates in excellent shape. Bound after: SPON Jacob 1647-1685. Histoire de la Ville Et de l'Estat de Genève. Utrecht: Frans Halma 1685. 522pp. 16 of table. Woodcut printer’s device of Halma with motto “Vivitur ingenio” one lives on in spirit to title additional engraved title 6 plates of which 3 are folding among which the view of the Geneva region with placenames highlighted in yellow woodcut headpieces and decorative initials; one small fold-tear to Geneva plate. Formerly in the collection of famed bibliophile Henri Burton of Geneva his morocco bookplate neatly to front endpaper. <br/><br/>French sammelband of the ‘Travels of Sir Jean Chardin;’ one of the finest works of early Western scholarship on Persia and India and Spon’s ‘History of Geneva’ from the collection of Henri Burton. A great deal of European travel writing details the history of Europe’s relationship to the Orient a place highly exoticized by western observers. Jean Chardin was a trader and the son of a jeweler who first went to the Levant in 1665 to purchase gems. He made a second journey in 1671 in the company of the artist Guillaume Grelot whom he met in Istanbul and whose drawings inspired the engravings in the present work. This edition comprises the first volume of the author’s manuscript dealing with the period 1671-1673 and is all that was published until 1711. His work is divided into four parts: the first recounts his journey from Paris to Ispahan 1671-77 the second describes Persia and Ispahan the third the ruins of Persepolis and the fourth gives a history of Persia based on Persian writers. /// Spon 1647-1685 was a doctor and pioneering archaeologist of Greek antiquities. After the revocation of the Edict of Nantes he fled France for Switzerland dying not long after in Geneva. His history of Geneva first published in 1680 was translated into English in 1687. Chardin an experienced trader is in a position to give detailed accounts of trade-routes prices articles bought and sold customs problems and so on whereas Spon is primarily interested in Antiquity concentrating on giving the exact wording of inscriptions illustrations of medals and ancient buildings and the comparison of towns and landscapes with the descriptions which appear in Classical texts.
