This is Volume V from a complete set of 6 volumes. Signed by President James Buchanan on the title page. This law book is from the personal library of President James Buchanan. His library was primarily held at his home in Lancaster PA called Wheatland. The majority of his presidential papers correspondence and books went to Dickinson college his alma mater. After graduating with honors in 1809 James Buchanan moved to Lancaster and became a legal apprentice to James Hopkins. He was admitted to the Pennsylvania Bar in 1812. Buchanan would go on to serve in the House of Representatives from 1821-1831 United States Senator 1834-1845 then as the 17th Secretary of State under President James K. Polk. He was elected President of the United States in 1856 serving one term. He predicted in retirement that "history would vindicate my memory" but his inability to stop the succession of the southern states has sealed his legacy as one of the least successful presidents in history. The Board was a scheme by British Army psychiatrists to discover and develop officer candidates and Moreno's sociometrics were influential in Eric Trist and Wilfred Bion's experiment of Regimental Nomination where units were encouraged to nominate candidates.<br/>Linton C. Freeman identified four defining properties of social network analysis: 1 It involves the intuition that links among social actors are important. 2 It is based on the collection and analysis of data that record social relations that link actors. 3 It draws heavily on graphic imagery to reveal and display the patterning of those links. And 4 it develops mathematical and computational models to describe and explain those patterns.<br/>He wrote "Until the 1930s however no one had used all four properties at the same time. Modern social network analysis was introduced by a psychiatrist Jacob L. Moreno and a psychologist Helen Jennings. They conducted elaborate research first among the inmates of a prison later in a reform school for girls. Moreno and Jennings named their approach sociometry." A chapter on psychological geography anticipates the work of the Lettrist International.<br/><br/>"Moreno founded psychodrama and pioneered group psychotherapy. Apart from its psychiatric and sociological significance this work contained some of the earliest graphic depictions of social networks— data visualization methods later applied to numerous other disciplines. ‎Memorandum Book with Medical Lecture Notes of Dr. Jacob Burger of Franklin Square Columbiana County Ohio graduate of the Eclectic Medical Institute of Cincinnati Ohio 1854-1895‎

Good. small quarto 73 manuscript pages plus blanks bound in contemporary ¼ leather and marbled paper covered boards binding worn rubbed and scuffed entries are written in ink in a legible hand. Dr. Jacob Burger 1832-1903 Jacob Burger was born in October 1832 in Ohio. Burger's 1903 death notice in the American Medicine Journal states that he graduated from the Eclectic Medical Institute at Cincinnati Ohio in 1856. Eclectic medicine was a branch of American medicine which made use of botanical remedies along with other substances and physical therapy practices which was popular in the latter half of the 19th and first half of the 20th centuries. The term was coined by Constantine Samuel Rafinesque 1784-1841 a physician who lived among the Native Americans and observed their use of medicinal plants. Rafinesque used the word eclectic to refer to those physicians who employed whatever was found to be beneficial to their patients. Burger is said to have settled at Franklin Square Columbiana County Ohio in 1859 where he established a medical practice. In the 1860 Census we find a "Jacob Burger" physician enumerated at Salem Columbiana County. The post office for this area of Salem was "Franklin Square." We learn also from the 1860 Census information that Burger was married his wife's name was Emma. The couple had two children Sarah aged 3 and an infant aged three months who was at the time still unnamed. The family was still living at Franklin Square in 1880 when that census was taken. Burger was listed as a physician surgeon. Dr. Burger spent the rest of his life at Franklin Square engaged in the practice of medicine he died there of a stroke on January 27 1903. Description of the Memorandum Book The first page of the volume bears the inscription "Coroners Witness Fee Certificate The State of Ohio Col. C. 1890." This note states that "Dr. J. Burger" acted as a witness and was to receive $ 10.00 for attendance as witness at the inquest of the death of a woman whose death was caused by "violence." The next section of the volume contains a two page discourse on "intellectual powers" and consists of a disquisition on the "brutishness" of the South Seas Islands people as compared to those "with intellectual powers." Following this is a fourteen page essay on politics headed: "Resolved: That in times of political discussion it is the duty of every citizen to express his sentiments freely and attach himself to some party." This essay was written as the "first debate with the Senior Class and finished on Saturday morning Oct 7th 1854 Wittenberg College D. Burger." The above section is followed by a fifty pages with notes on the "Lectures of Prof. King" consisting of sixteen different medical lectures for the school year of 1855-1856. The lectures were given by Prof. John King 1813-1893 who lectured at the Eclectic Medical Institute in Cincinnati from which Dr. Burger graduated. King published books on "women's diseases" as well as guides to health. He was professor of Obstetrics at the institute. The lectures cover various diseases their symptoms treatment with medical prescriptions. The final section of the volume includes a twelve page list of names and dates. The first date is 1859 the last year is 1895. There are 276 entries and are presumably the names of his patients of Franklin Square. There are also eight pages of medical recipes scattered throughout the volume. <br /> hardcover books‎

Whyld Ravillous 1821:4 1st edition.<br><br> Jacob Henry Sarratt was a London schoolmaster who learned his chess from Verdoni and established himself as Professor of Chess. He was the leading English chess master from the late 18th century to the early 19th century. He was a frequenter of the London Chess Club which met at Toms Coffee House in Cornhill. His fee was a guinea a lesson. Under his influence stalemate was accepted as a draw. He was the first great English author on chess. His reputation was high and a revelation to English players. His works were of a pioneering character as to chess and the English language. His first excellent books were <i>A treatise on the Game of Chess</i> Vol 1 and Vol 2 1808. There is a prefix listing books on chess from Damiano onwards and some friendly criticism of Philidor. Vol 1 contains Different Methods of Opening the Games then follows 75 Critical Variations. Vol 2 is Teaching the Player who does not have the move how to frustrate his adversarys attack. Then there are instructions how to checkmate and a section on endings with pawns only. His next book introduced in translation the works of Damiano Lopez and Salvio. Published in London in 1813 it deals with those old authors extensively. His next book was Vol 1 Gianutio Vol 2 Selenus with a preface giving some details of the authors. In 1821 was published <i>A New Treatise on the Game of Chess</i>. It is a more exhaustive work than the 1808 publication. He was assisted in this work by his pupil W Lewis. Sarratt died in 1821. His widow then went to Paris and taught chess. In 1844 following an article in <i>Le Palamede</i> describing her as aged 85 and destitute an appeal was launched which enabled her to live in comfort for the rest of her life.<br><br> <b>Condition:</b><br><br> Former library copy from the Brooklyn Public Library with perforated stamp to title and some stamps through out.
